Enter Hitler
In 1927 Adolf Hitler held a Nazi rally in Berlin and some people began to think that war with Germany was not just a thing of the past.
In England the Church of England proposed to revise the Book of Common Prayer. Parliament rejected it. It was rewritten and again rejected, this showing the power of Parliament over the Established Church of England. The Franchise was extended to women over the age of 21.
In 1928 Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, one of the most important events of the 20th Century. And, Mickey Mouse was first seen in a Hollywood film called Steamboat Willy.
JAMES HENRY THOMAS (1874-1949)- Born in Newport, Wales
- Labour MP for Derby from 1910
- Responsible for the founding of the National Union of Railwaymen and the first successful strike in 1919
- Became colonial secretary in 1924 and in MacDonald's second administration was Lord Privy Seal
- Joined the National Government in 1931
- Often seen as a champagne socialist
- His Cabinet career ended in embarrassment as he was found guilty of divulging budget secrets in his capacity as Colonial Secretary 1935-1936
The first elastoplast appeared in England in 1928 and so too did the first pound and 10-shilling notes.
