Programme 3: Immunisation

Tuesday 16 April 2002, 9.00-9.30pm

Every year across the globe, millions of dollars are spent on trying to persuade people to look after their health. Some campaigns have proved spectacular successes, others have had no effect at all. Jackie Hardgrave explores the business of health education, its triumphs and pitfalls, and its vital role in protecting the health of a community.

Child immunisation

3. Immunisation - All over the world health workers are trying to reduce the level of infectious disease by immunising children and mothers against measles, polio, tetanus etc. One problem is trying to get to those people in the first place, but what happens when a mother asks if this really is the best thing for her baby? Health scares flare up when it is suggested that a vaccine could damage your child's health in some other way. People refuse to have their child vaccinated and the disease rate increases - putting more children and adults at risk of infection. How do you go about getting the right message across?
