It was 11pm on Monday when the true extent of what Chorley manager Jamie Vermiglio was taking on tonight suddenly hit home.

Vermiglio has a book he uses to write details down about opposition players.

The first page he looked at had Farsley Celtic on it - the next had Wolves. Farsley Celtic do not have any players that cost £35m like Fabio Silva, or any European Championship winners like Joao Moutinho and Rui Patricio, or a current England international like Conor Coady.

"Everton and Liverpool might look at them and think Wolves have weaknesses," said Vermiglio.

"But for us, they are probably the best team we will ever play against."

"Mention Chorley and it'll send a shudder down the spines of a generation of fans," says lifelong Wolverhampton Wanderers supporter Russ Evers.

Despite a poor run of form, an FA Cup tie against opponents from the sixth tier of English football ought to be relatively straightforward for Wolves.

But there is history between Chorley, the last non-league club standing in this season's competition, and their Premier League opponents, who meet in the fourth round at Victory Park on Friday.

    Unwanted history in Wolves' case.

One of the most famous names in English football were back page news after a 3-0 defeat by Chorley's £25-a-week players on 24 November 1986.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo has gone pretty strong retaining five of the side that started their Premier League loss to West Brom on 16 January.

That means the likes of Conor Coady and Willy Boly both line-up in defence while Joao Moutinho, Leander Dendoncker and Fabio Silva also start.

Wolves XI: Ruddy, Boly, Coady, Kilman, Ait-Nouri, Dendoncker, Vitinha, Moutinho, Hoever, Cutrone, Silva

Subs: Patricio, Neto, Neves, Semedo, Traore, Richards, Otasowie, Lonwijk, Corbeanu

  6. Real life is tough for Chorley bosspublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 22 January 2021

Tonight's game is a dream for Chorley boss Jamie Vermigilio.

But his day job as a primary school headteacher has been occupying most of his time during recent weeks.

"The perception is that schools are closed," he said.

"Trust me, schools are more open than they have ever been before. I have 150 registered for a school place, children of families who haven’t gone two coins to rub together. School is tough."

Vermiglio would love his own children to be at Victory Park for tonight's game. But, like all other potential spectators, they will have to watch on TV.

My little boy has not been able to come to any games," he said. "I am leaving my kids at home for the biggest moment in my life."

Chorley captain Scott Leather has booked the day off from his job as a lift engineer to focus on tonight's game.

Many of his team-mates will spend the day at work, including manager and school teacher Jamie Vermiglio.

Back in 1986, Wolves, then in the Fourth Division, were embarrassed 3-0 by Northern Premier League Chorley in the first round.

Vermiglio hopes the club's historic win against Wolves 35 years ago can inspire his players on Friday.

"If the players can be motivated even more, we're going to try it by utilising the spirit of '86 and what that team did," said Vermiglio, whose side are the lowest ranked left in the competition.

"That's what they've got to aim for. The game in '86 brings an extra bit of spice, mainly because those people are still here."

Victory Park is what I call a proper football ground.

The facilities are basic but perfectly adequate, the pitch is OK but a bit bobbly.

If the fans were here they could get close enough to the players to touch them.

The 'show' is not as glossy as the Premier League - but that doesn't mean it lacks fun.
