On the march with Ally's Army in 1978

When Scotland qualified for the 1978 World Cup with victory over Wales at Anfield in October 1977, hopes were high among fans, players and officials alike.

When asked about his teams' chances, manager Ally McLeod remarked that, "without a doubt, it's the best squad that's left the British Isles yet."

What followed was a tale of hope, hubris, disappointment and ultimately redemption as Scotland produced a memorable tournament that has ultimately become part of national folklore.

This is a sideways look at the story of that campaign, told by archive footage from Blue Peter (who ran a competition to design the teams' mascot) and the 大象传媒 News reports which followed the fans who had travelled more than 7,000 miles to support their team.
