Gorky's Zygotic Mynci interview (2003)

Euros Childs

We invited you to put your questions to Gorky's Zygotic Mynci on a live webchat. The results are here...

When we invited users of this site to put questions to Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, the response was incredible. Sadly, there wasn't enough time or space to answer all your questions, but frontman Euros Childs selected his favourites.

Nathaniel Hate: What's the deal with your own label? Are you funded by anyone and have you got distribution sorted?

We're on a label called Sanctuary Records. They also distribute our records. We were toying with the idea of starting our own label but realised that we didn't have enough money.

Barry Palmer, Anglesey: Having been signed for a number of different labels now, how do you deal with the frustration of record company pressure to have a 'hit' record, given that they do not invest enough time, money and publicity to you?

We've never felt the pressure from a record company to have a hit record... but we have been frustrated with the promotion of some of our albums - particularly How I Long...

Jamie, NY: Are you guys ever going to release a DVD? For example, a concert, music videos, documentary, interview, maybe even a movie.

We've no plans as yet.

Kevin, California: What do you like to do for fun when you're not writing music?

We like to nurse sick animals back to health.

Alex H, Eugene, Oregon: I'm sad, tell me a joke.

Q: which classical composer's work is easy to get hold of ?
A: Handel

Medley in Bristol, Willow in Liverpool, Tom in Los Angeles, Matthew Pimm in Kidderminster, Yuu Endo in Japan, Cindy Gomez in Michigan, Liz in Yorkshire, Juan in Spain and Eamon Donoghue in Illinois: Do you have any plans to play live in the future? Is there any chance of a tour of Spain/USA/Bristol/Los Angeles/the West Midlands/Japan?

Hopefully this year we will be playing in Spain, Bristol, Los Angeles, and the West Midlands... I'm not too sure about Japan though - we've been wanting to tour there since 1997 but we haven't made it yet.

Neil Young - because I'm listening to him at the moment.

Louise Ostrowska, Portsmouth: Euros - how do you get your hair so lovely and shiny, almost as if it shines with a magical light?

Thank you for asking, Louise. The secret is to not wash it.

Daniel Cooper, United States: Throughout the years I have noticed how your music has matured. Do you find yourselves less willing to create experimental music as your band develops?

That depends on what your idea of experimental music is. Because a piece of music has a song structure (lyrics, melody) doesn't render it less experimental than a recording of a man sawing a piece of wood in half. We're forever trying to keep things fresh, find new ways of songwriting - that, to me is experimental.

Mark Vachon, Cambridge, MA: I saw you in Somerville MA in 2002. Perfection. I could not believe how you moved me. Anyhow, do you think you could put a tour together with SFA and John Cale? I think it would blow minds!

There are no plans for us to tour with John Cale or the Super Furry Animals.

Raymond, Glasgow: Is that really Euros on the cover of the Patio Song single?

Yes, it is.

Daniel: Will the older Albums (Tatay/Patio) be re-released in Europe?

Yes... hopefully before the end of the year.

Nathaniel Hate: Have any of you ever kissed a girl on the lips (except for Megan cos that's sick)?

No... but hopefully before the end of the year.

Cody, San Jose, CA: What was the last concert you attended?

I went to see Teenage Fanclub in Bristol.

John Jennings, UK: Two questions for Megan. Firstly, when writing songs, do the band just present you with their latest composition and expect you to just be able to play along with them? Also, can you spot a frustrated string player when you see one? ;)

What a strange question - you make it sound like she's not in the band! Everyone's together when they hear a song for the first time, and everyone plays along.

Joe, Cardiff: How did it feel to be playing the new bands tent at Glastonbury 2002, seeing as you've been around for so long now?

I don't know why it's called the new bands tent. We first played on that stage about five years ago - the Jesus And Mary Chain also played. Last year Donovan was going to play but pulled out at the last minute. None of these was new.

Casey, USA: If I were to come and visit Wales (which I intend to, soon-ish!), what would be the must see/do itinerary? Museums, events, etc...

I dont want to take responsibility for your holiday just in case you end up having a bad time. But you can't go wrong with a visit to the beaches of Pembrokshire.

Pat, Virginia: I think How I Long... was really brilliant. I was curious about the song Christina - was there some kind of real-world inspiration for it? A news story, or a novel, or something else?

Christina wasn't based on a specific incident or person.

Nathaniel Hate: What's the best dressing room/rider you've ever had?

It was at a festival in Spain. They had a swimming pool and we turned up before anyone else and had a nice swim.

Barry Palmer, Anglesey: Have you ever 'made love' with Gorky's songs as the background music?! (I bet Geri Halliwell, Robbie Williams et al do with their own records!)

Certainly not, Barry.
