Climate change and Scotland's water

Climate change will bring more challenges for Scotland:

  • The amount of rainfall will vary more throughout the year.
  • There will be more risk of flooding in winter.
  • There will be more frequent and more severe droughts.
  • Overall, there will be less water available.
  • Less available water will have an impact on access to water for drinking, industry, farming and for ecosystems.

  • Every day, Scottish Water delivers 1.44 billion litres of drinking water to Scottish homes.
  • There are over 30,000 miles of water pipes in Scotland.
  • Every day, 984 million litres of waste water are processed in Scotland.
  • Scottish Water is one of the biggest electricity users in Scotland. It uses the same energy as around 140, 000 homes.
