Interview bias
interview bias A situation in which the interviewer influences responses from participants by using certain types of questions, or saying something in a particular way. is when the results of the research are affected by the interviewers themselves.
There are different ways the interviewer can affect the interviewee, perhaps even without realising it, eg
- frown at a particular response from the interviewee which makes the interviewee feel uncomfortable and stop what they are saying
- provide leading questions, which are questions that encourage a particular answer, eg 鈥淚 know that every intelligent person thinks that school uniforms are a bad idea, but what do you think?鈥
- use a particular tone of voice or emphasise certain words, which make people answer in a particular way, eg 鈥淗ow sad or happy do you feel about this?鈥
- use different body language for each interview - open and friendly body language is going to make people relax and react more positively than unfriendly body language
