Acids and basesHydrogen and hydroxide ions

The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. A pH less than 7 is acidic. Alkalis dissolve in water to give a pH greater than 7. A pH equal to 7 indicates a neutral solution.

Hydrogen and hydroxide ions

Acidic and alkaline solutions can conduct electricity because they have ions that are free to carry charge.

Look at the formulae of these acids. They all contain H+ ions.

Acid nameFormulaIonic Formula
Hydrochloric acidHClH+(aq) Cl-(aq)
Sulfuric acidH2SO42H+(aq) SO42-(aq)
Nitric acidHNO3H+(aq) NO3-(aq)
Acid nameHydrochloric acid
FormulaHCl

Acid nameSulfuric acid
FormulaH2SO4
Ionic Formula2H+(aq) SO42-(aq)
Acid nameNitric acid
FormulaHNO3
Ionic FormulaH+(aq) NO3-(aq)

When an acid is diluted the concentration of H+ ions is decreased and the pH increases towards 7.

Look at the formulae of these alkalis. They all contain OH- ions.

Alkali nameFormulaIonic Formula
Sodium hydroxideNaOHNa+(aq) OH-(aq)
Calcium hydroxideCa(OH)2Ca2+(aq) 2OH-(aq)
Lithium hydroxideLiOHLi+(aq) OH-(aq)
Alkali nameSodium hydroxide

Alkali nameCalcium hydroxide
FormulaCa(OH)2

The more concentrated an acid or alkali the better it conducts. When an alkali is diluted the concentration of OH- ions is decreased and the pH decreases towards 7.
