Conveying the future in German can be done in several ways - by using werden, by combining the present tense with future time phrases, or by using phrases like ich hoffe, ich plane zu, ich habe vor.

Regardless of which tense you use in German, it's important to follow word order rules when putting sentences together in speech and in writing.

An important word order rule to follow is:

Always make sure that if you include two or more of these elements in a sentence, the correct word order of Time, Manner, Place (TMP) pattern is followed:

  • Wir fahren n盲chsten Sommer (TIME) mit zwei Freunden (MANNER) nach Polen (PLACE). 鈥 We're going to travel to Poland with two friends next summer.

(literally: We travel next summer with two friends to Poland.)

Remembering TMP, translate these sentences:

Using werden:

  • We will go to the park after school with the dog.
  • I will meet my mum in town on Saturday.
  • My sister will drink hot chocolate at the Christmas market in winter.

Using the present tense:

  • Are you (plural) going to the football stadium at the weekend with your friends?
  • They are going to play cricket on the sports field next week.
  • Will you (polite) learn German in Switzerland next summer?
