Career planning is a lifelong process
You鈥檝e landed your dream job. The people are great. The work is rewarding.
What next?
You could sit tight for a while, or you could branch out, learn new things, develop new skills and take on more responsibility in order to achieve your full potential and increase your wages.
But how do you make it happen?
Getting ahead within your current role
The first step in developing your career is mastering your current role. There are four main ways to do this:
- Think about your personal qualities. The key qualities required in the world of work are commitment, loyalty, flexibility and problem solving. When you demonstrate these qualities, you show your manager that you鈥檙e a valuable employee.
- Deliver good work on time. Show that you鈥檙e dedicated to doing a good job. Demonstrate that you can be relied on to meet deadlines and expectations. Managing yourself is important. It means your boss will manage you less, and leave you to get on with the most important stuff.
- Be a team player. Getting along with people is a key skill. There are very few roles in the world of work that don鈥檛 require you to work with others. Building a strong network of colleagues who enjoy working with you is another important step in demonstrating your capabilities.
- Develop your technical skills. It鈥檚 important to nurture skills that are relevant to the workforce. Communication, information technology, science, and maths are all in strong demand.
Once you feel that you have mastered your current role and are consistently doing good work, it鈥檚 time to think about the next step of your career path.
