Short-term goals
Start off by setting short-term goals. What do you what you want to achieve in the coming year?
Do you want to:
- complete a training course?
- attend a conference?
- get support with a particular part of your role which you find challenging?
- work on a wider variety of tasks?
- take on more responsibility?
- find a mentor to give you career guidance?
Long-term goals
What do you want to be doing in three, five or even ten years time?
Do you want to move into a management role? Do you want to try a different role and learn new skills?
You could:
- take on more responsibility;
- develop leadership skills;
- get experience of managing others;
- improve your public speaking skills;
- learn business finance.
Be SMART
To help you set your targets, use the SMART technique:
- Specific 鈥 be precise about what you want to achieve.
- Measurable 鈥 how will you know when you have achieved your goal?
- Achievable 鈥 is it possible to reach your goal?
- Realistic 鈥 don鈥檛 set your standards too high.
- Time 鈥 give yourself a deadline.
