Short-term goals

Start off by setting short-term goals. What do you what you want to achieve in the coming year?

Do you want to:

  • complete a training course?
  • attend a conference?
  • get support with a particular part of your role which you find challenging?
  • work on a wider variety of tasks?
  • take on more responsibility?
  • find a mentor to give you career guidance?

Long-term goals

What do you want to be doing in three, five or even ten years time?

Do you want to move into a management role? Do you want to try a different role and learn new skills?

You could:

  • take on more responsibility;
  • develop leadership skills;
  • get experience of managing others;
  • improve your public speaking skills;
  • learn business finance.

Be SMART

To help you set your targets, use the SMART technique:

  • Specific 鈥 be precise about what you want to achieve.
  • Measurable 鈥 how will you know when you have achieved your goal?
  • Achievable 鈥 is it possible to reach your goal?
  • Realistic 鈥 don鈥檛 set your standards too high.
  • Time 鈥 give yourself a deadline.
