Taking action

Illustration showing guidance on personal career management

You鈥檝e set your goals, now it鈥檚 time to take action.

Draw up an action plan. Include all your goals and the steps you need to take to achieve them. Use the SWOT technique to help you break down your goals:

Strengths

What are you good at?

What are you passionate about?

Weaknesses

Which areas need development?

What roles or tasks should you avoid?

Opportunities

What possibilities are open to you?

Who can give you support or mentor you?

Threats

What challenges will you encounter?

What might restrict you?

Evaluating your progress and achievements

It鈥檚 important to review your progress regularly as you work through your action plan to make sure that you stay on track. Reflect on your achievements at the end of each year and make adjustments for the year ahead.

It also gives you an opportunity to discuss your short-term and long-term career goals.

Learning and development

Ask for an annual review with your manager. This feedback session lets you find out what your manager thinks about your performance, and provides an opportunity to discuss your goals.
