Eating out
Description
With eating places in abundance, many Chinese like to go out for a meal. There鈥檚 a lot to choose from; Sichuanese hotpot and Cantonese stir-fry are just two of hundreds of China鈥檚 varied cuisines. Alternatively there are food stalls on the streets, where you can eat equally tasty, but often strange dishes, like deep fried grasshoppers.
For the Mid-Autumn Festival a home-cooked dinner is the meal of choice, with all members of the family getting together over a sumptuous meals including fish and vegetables. This clip covers vocabulary for various foods, saying what you like and ordering portions of street food.
Classroom Ideas
Set up a鈥 truth-or-lie鈥 competition in the class to familiarise students with the Chinese culture of eating out. Use questions such as 鈥淐hinese eat deep fried grasshopper - true or false?鈥. Put the whole class into two groups and read the question to them. Write each group鈥檚 answers on a blackboard before watching the video. The correct answers can be found while watching the clip, pausing if anything needs to be explained.
