Green wiki

In our recent blog about wikis, I mentioned that Thomas Homer-Dixon, a renowned futurologist, predicted that wikis covering environmental concerns would be an important tool in the fight against global warming. Well, this week sees the launch of the first such blog called .

Its early days for the wiki yet, so it is hardly an exhaustive list of contributions. There are some entries that are fairly predictable, such as planting trees, but it does provide some useful websites to visit should you wish to take this further. One thing that caught my eye that I must admit I wasn’t previously aware of, was the idea of ethical website hosting. A number of companies will host your website using only renewable energy. There may be other practical ideas relevant to what you do there as well.

As with wikis in general, this one is fairly accessible. There’s nothing present that most user groups won’t be able to do, whether that be to read, write or edit an entry. There are though, measures that could be taken to make things easier, of course. There aren’t any ‘skip links’ features, or opportunities to customise the appearance of the page, but there are no images of text stopping users from editing entries, or neat uses of Ajax scripting to trip up screen reader users either. But there are a whole lot more websites out there much worse. So if you want to get involved in saving the planet, and want to utilise the power of the read-write web to do so, it's certainly possible.
