iPlayer update
- 12 Dec 06, 03:00 PM
As we鈥檝e mentioned before in the blog entry featuring an interview with Gareth Ford Williams, the 大象传媒 are planning on making content available for download next year. In order to watch programmes when you like via this service, you will need to download the iPlayer.
We thought we would re-visit the iPlayer for a quick update on what it is going to be and how it is progressing toward launch.
Using your browser, you鈥檒l be able to scan the programme schedules to choose what you want to watch. You will also be able to see the library showing what programmes you have already downloaded from there.
Programmes will be available for download for up to seven days after broadcast. Once downloaded, you have thirteen weeks in which to open the programme before it expires. After the programme is opened and ready for viewing then it must be watched within seven days. One other thing worth noting is that it will cost nothing to download programmes.
There鈥檚 no doubt that this is a big thing for the 大象传媒. In fact, Mark Thompson, the Director General, even went so far as to say that it could be 鈥渕ake or break鈥 for the organisation. The staggering amount of content that the 大象传媒 plans to release for download shows the size of the task ahead of them. And don鈥檛 under-estimate how significant a step this is for us, either. Being given the freedom to watch what we want, when we want and how we want could have a massive impact on how we watch TV.
As the interview with Gareth highlighted, accessibility features are not just layered on top, but have been a consideration from the very beginning. These include closed captioning, audio description and sophisticated tools to modify the appearance of the interface. Currently, the iPlayer is being tested both internally by 大象传媒 staff, and by an external consultancy for compatibility with screen readers. The next steps towards launch are further testing, with more features integrated into the iPlayer before it becomes available in May 2007.

It's interesting that now the iPlayer is available, searching the 大象传媒 website for "iplayer" and "download" leads here. I don't suppose anyone at the 大象传媒 is interested in making the URL for downloading the iPlayer available to the public?

Have searched everywhere, yet still I cannot find the Download site for the iPlayer.
I have seen 大象传媒 Click on Line, this morning, advising that the iPlayer was available.
I read that the player was to be available, but where?????
Kind Regards
Patrick

Yes it seems very strange that a razzle dazzle launch for the iPlayer is followed by its non-availability!!

The launch of the 大象传媒 iPlayer was trailed weeks ago, it is even being talked about on 大象传媒 Five Live right now - so where can I download it?
If the distribution is restricted just how did any licence holder get on such a list?
Until the iPlayer is available for download I suggest 大象传媒 News stop praising it and perhaps start covering why isn't available?

Help!! The 大象传媒's much hyped, much anticipated iPlayer seems to be all talk and no trousers. Can anyone tell me where I can download it please. I'm keen to test it but I have one question, why are the programmes available for such a limited time? It seems to make more sense to use a DVD/Video recorder, that way you can watch the shows you recorded at any time in the future, not just for the 30 days??

Update to yesterdays post:
Well after much searching around the 大象传媒 website I finally found something relating to the iPlayer. It would seem that it is still in the beta phase and you need to fill out a form and then wait for a response from the 大象传媒. I was led to believe that this was a new service available to all with just a few clicks to download. What an absolute load of HYPE we have got from the 大象传媒 regarding this:( very disappointed after all the publicity it has received. Bad 大象传媒 :P

Couldn't agree more with the negative comments. After trumpeting its availability you make it impossible to find and use. Coupled with the almost permanent "technical difficulties" on the listen again service service on radio it seems the 大象传媒's competence is at about the same level as its honesty. Back to Sky, Channel 4 and Five for me, all of whom seem to be able to do the same without problems. Any chance of the person responsible taking time out from their training in how not to lie to viewers to sort this shambles out? Thought not.

You did hype iplayer, and people are rightly angry. They may spend months before they can have full or a semi use. Other channels have done this. They are now using existing telecommnications to extend digital TV.
You are lagging behind, get your act together, otherwise the 大象传媒 will lose out.

Having tried to use the iplayer I find that although I can get all of the required screens (eventually) the download does not work; it either sends me back to the programme choice and continues this loop everytime I try or gives a message saying it is checking my status. I cannot seem to get it to work so like others above I am disappoined as the content is the kind of material I would like to watch at different times to those broadcast.

When it works, it is good. The picture quality is excellent and I appreciate the option of watching a programme when it is convenient for me. However, the download time is quite slow. I seem to get the message "checking your status" and the accompanying message about inability to download all too often. Also, I am concerned about all the Kservice ( re. peer to peer) messages I have to accept.

I am another frustrated non user. Surely 大象传媒 you can make the way in and method of selecting/downloading a lot easier than this. I just gave up!!

I cannot find any way to get the download manager to download any prograqmmes. I do not usually require this service but the programme namely Doctors for Thursday 20 March is not available to be played on my iplayer. Why Is This??
Complain about this post
I have to say that the non-availability of iPlayer's download managed is a misuse of public money.
Shame on you 大象传媒 for this.

Thank God I found this site. I've managed to download the iplayer manager but the programmes will not download no matter how much I try and I've configured my computer to all the possible solutions provided by the accessibilty help page. Is it because I use Vista. I have a similar problem with downloading other programmes off the internet. I'd have thought the 大象传媒 could have managed to work with the latest computer programmes.
