just a quickie.....why the skull and crossed-bones doodle?

  • Comment number 2.

In case I didn't miss something about this in the show: Graceland is about Paul Simon taking a roadtrip after his marriage to Carrie Fisher fell apart. Perfect song for The Splits.

Wow, you're really leaning in in that photo, you can barely see Sharon!

What a lovely guest Sharon Horgan was today! She was clearly on your wave-length Buckles, you bounced off each other really well ; ) Delightful. The 'forehead' and 'turkey farming' conversations were hilarious!

Kicking off with a bit of Dylan was nice; when you listen to the Madeleine Peyroux version, it's hard to believe that it's the same song...I know what you mean about the jauntiness of it though!
I've not really listened to much Travis, so 'Love' was a revelation to me, just beautiful, I liked the Built to Spill track too.
Some great classics from Sharon, Kate Bush is always good and at this rate you're gonna be playing a Mac tune every week!
For me, the absolute highlight of the show was the megamix at the end...you did a nice smooth job on that one, linking in some great tunes and fabulous movies. I love Woody's monologues and that is one of the sweetest, another good one is at the beginning of Annie Hall when he's talking about his break up with Annie.
I don't know if Richard E Grant ever got to play Hamlet for real onstage but that soliloquy suggests that maybe he should have. Very emotional! Can't beat a bit of Floyd and 'Wish you Were Here' is an all time great. Oh, and isn't Scott Walker's voice just amazing, he could make a nursery rhyme sound full of emotion!

Looking forward to next week and hoping it's not too full of 'Noodly Roundabout Music'!

    Thanks Buckles! Byyyeeee! :D
PS You are right, Deanna Troi was irritating! and why didn't we hear jilted john on the recorded/live show?
Good luck with the brain exchange op!

@fivedigitdisco There is a line "My travelling companion is 9 years old he is the child of my first marriage" I'm guessing he is singing about Harper Simon, his first child with Peggy Harper. So I guess it's about lots of lost loves.

    Great show, man.

On the theme of things not to say to someone who has just broken up, here are two of my faves:

    1. Plenty more fish in the sea - not many women though.
    2. Take it from all of us, she was no good in bed...

(both from early radio version of 'Whose line is it anyway?'

    love, AK

    James Producer,

There's an error in the tracklist. It should read Built To Spill - Else.

That said, I remember making mixtapes and breaking with the ARTIST - SONG TITLE format by accident on a number of occasions. Utterly heartbreaking, and of course those inlays were like gold dust. I always seemed to have more tapes than inlays (this is where the habit of making one's own artwork stems from, I'd say - necessity rather than whimsy).

I delayed taking a train just to listen to today's show, completely disregarding the fact that it was tearjerkers only. By the end, the energy had been sucked out of me somewhat. Is it needless to add I was late for my train?

    Art-pop next week. w00t!

  • Comment number 6.

@happygoth...I thought that it was the wrong way round! Mind you this is definitely an occasion when the artist/song is easily interchangeable!

  • Comment number 7.

@happygoth & James - oh happy day! It's just so Adam-and-Joe to do that. They have taught him well/addled his brain.

Another great programme, just a couple of quick thoughts. Nice to hear some more Mac, Ray Charles and of course Bob. Gracelands is a good left field dumped song but I have to say I don't think Wish You Were Here is a good choice as we all know its about Syd rather than a young lady. Also not sure why you used that bit of Withnail. Always thought that was a very overated movie IMHO.

Now the ABC track & your thoughts about a young lady walking in with a pumping bloody heart. The very sadly missed Cuddly Kenny Everett actually did this a sketch in one of his video show's singing along to All Of My Heart. Anyone else remember this? I'd like to think that you picked this track as a result of my recommendation but it is such a classic break up track you were always going to use it.

I have no recommendations for next weeks show as I'm strictly a three minute hero kind of music fan. I would have said O Superman but I've been beaten to that. However I will, of course listen with great interest to see what crops up.

    And Now..This!! =====>>

Great podcast this week, Dr. Buckles. I've recently discovered after owning a "generic touch-screen based mp3 player" that I can listen to things on the iplayer using it, so I plan on dedicating some time to the full show this week.

I kept waiting for you to play something from what I consider to be one of the great break-up albums - The Meadowlands by The Wrens. It really has to be taken as a whole to be truly appreciated, but 'Happy' and '13 Months in 6 Minutes' are good solid places to start. Then again, you're an 80s guy and I'm a 90s guy. Still, really worth a go.

Looking forward to next week! I have to mention something about Peter Serafinowicz, what a fantastic laugh that man has. The chemistry between you was great to hear!

I think this is my favourite mixtape so far - the depths of musical melancholy are always (paradoxically) fun to plunder, and Sharon was a perfect fit. I just listened to it whilst sitting here by a lake in the highlands of Scotland, pondering the nature of love and reality and all that good stuff. Also giggling and scaring passing tourists. Life is good.

PS - James, does Adam know you post up the tracklists in lower case?? Don't you know that makes him FURIOUS??!! ;-)

  • Comment number 11.

Though I'm not a big fan of soppy music, I really enjoyed this weeks show.
Sharon was a lovely guest and a very funny lady.
I liked her choice of Kate Bush's 'You're the one'. Hadn't heard it before, but wow, what a powerful song.
I also enjoyed the theme from Eternal Sunshine. Had forgotten about that one, as I only saw the film once, right after I broke up with someone, and couldn't bare to watch it again after that.
Adam's mix at the end was also great. Nice mix work!

Also very cool to have my question read out, though it reminded me once again of how ridiculous my name sounds in English. Maybe I should opt for a name-change.

  • Comment number 12.

@Anouk your name is lovely don't change it!

  • Comment number 13.

    Hello.

Great show again, Sharon was a lovely guest, her Smith's pre-gig mosh training tale was funny and the song choices were really fitting. I do agree that to get the most out of the mix tape you have to listen to the full show, the whole point of the BMT is the musical representation of a theme, mood or feeling, the songs tie it all together. I always listen to the podcast as well though, it's a chuckle fest all the same but the show is the main event for me.

I really enjoyed The Splits, good work Adam! Something everyone can relate to there (apart from the very annoying Lucky People)..
Another good addition would have been The Sun Aint Gonna Shine Anymore by the Walker Brothers- totally miserable from the outset!

  • Comment number 15.

    Regarding Morrissey,
I don't know if that's still the case, but spitting is considered as the ultimate punk ritual to show respect.

  • Comment number 16.

Wow what an ending. And dead on 2hrs too! :-)

  • Comment number 17.

HELP! what's the piece of music called that Adam plays when reading micky magic pants' story?

  • Comment number 18.

    @hamishward
Hi Hamish, It's the love theme from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet and it's written by Nino Rota. Also used on Simon Bate's radio show "Our Tune"!

  • Comment number 19.

How perfect was the mini mix at the end - mmmmm wish you were here! Made coming back from holiday worth it!

  • Comment number 20.

Found a Spotify playlist with these songs in. Loooks like some weren't available on spofify.

  • Comment number 21.

Hey there adam, i love your 6music show The Big Mixtape. it kind of got me thinking about how the physical sharing of mixtapes seems to be becoming more of a rarity these days in this digital age.

In response i have just set up 'The Mixtape Project' where people can sign up to be members and once a month can send a mixtape they have made to another member, whilst receiving one in return.

Its hopefully a way to bring back the physical nature of music sharing in an old skool mixtape vibe. Check the link...

  • Comment number 22.

What a lovely idea Colourboxonline. I'm wondering if you feel that they have to be physically in cassette format to get the authentic feel?
I have a feeling that 95% of the population do not have means of playing a cassette!
I am often mocked by my friends for still having a cassette player both in my house and in my car!
I love the little paintings of cassettes at the top of your web page...did you make those yourself and scan them in???

  • Comment number 23.

Ahhh Agfa Ferro Colour!!! What a trip down memory lane :)

Nowadays I am more familiar with the concept of a "dj mix" (for want of a better term) being a continual piece of music with tracks mixed into each other, but I would churn out the C90s back in the day. Count me in!

  • Comment number 24.

If I would have been responsible for the playlist for this show I would have crashed the samaritans phone line.

Carpenters, radiohead etc etc. It would have been HORRIBLE.

P.s I wonder how Garths heyfever is doing? Give him a kleenex from me (one of those ones with a special balm that's meant to be kinder on your nose but doesn't really work)

My darling ex boyfriend of five years broke my heart the day after you and Joe decided to leave ´óÏó´«Ã½ 6Music for an indefinite sabbatical back in December. (He was a member of black squadron and we both listened to the show every week ; often singing along, and repeating your hilarious comments in social situations) Following our traumatic break-up and knowing that he was completely unaware of your confirmed departure I decided to send him an email that included a link to your announcement and simply read 'all of the best things in life come to an end'.

I was delighted when I heard about the theme of the 'splits' and considered sending him another email... in the end I decided not to and hope that instead he finds this postcast and listens by himself feeling continuously guilty.

  • Comment number 26.

Hey Adam. You HAVE to get my brother CHARLIE HIGSON on as a guest on you BigMixTape show! YOU HAVE TO!!!

    1. You know him, he talks very highly of you
    2. He's funny ... very funny (and he's famous etc)
    3. He's unbelievably well-versed in the world of music. He'll no doubt bring in some choice gems for your mix tape
    4. It would be my dream to have you and him shoot the breeze, talk rubbish and share stories

He was just out visiting me in Sydney and we talked about you quite a bit. Anyway I love your new show and if there's anything I can do to help make this happen I will, just get in touch. If he's busy I will clear his diary, if he doesn't want to I'll tell him he has to etc etc. All the best, Dan Higson Sydney, Australia.

Hey Adam, LOOK!! Official recognition. You're as cool as Scott Pilgrim.

  • Comment number 28.

@roboplege that's so funny, Buckle's is the only 'living' thing in that list. Is it real? That's not to say that I don't think he should be in a cool list; he should be numero uno! It's just that I always assume things are real when sometimes they are a joke! :D

  • Comment number 29.

@GKW - you just broke my heart and I wasn't even there :( I hope you're doing okay now, and that Dr Buckles' marvellous solo mumblings are helping to ease the pain. xxx

@danhigson - I hope you're for real and that Buckles takes you up on your offer to help make that happen; that would be brillopads!

  • Comment number 30.

Drats, I really wanted to listen to this episode and I seem to have missed the window for Listen Again and the podcast. Does anyone know if the podcast is available anywhere or is it lost forever?

  • Comment number 31.

Finally caught up with this one - delighted to hear your love for the Rumours album...! I'm with Lauras_a_star, my mixtape on this one would have been a bit gloomy.

Nevertheless, a couple of additional suggestions culled from my memories...

U2 - So Cruel (or indeed half of Achtung Baby)
World Party - And I Fell Back Alone. What an opening gambit "if we walk through each other as we leave the room you don't have to tell me that it's over"... OUCH.

Love, love, love the show Steve.

Possible caption for photo - "Just Married!" ;)
