SONY THANKS & QUESTION FOR SHARON HORGAN

Post categories:

Blogwyn Pig!

Ìý

How are you? I am fine. Thanks for all your very kind messages of congratulation following our gold award at the Sony's the other week. Here's a picture of me with table buddies James Stirling (our producer of course), Jarvis Cocker and his 6 Music producer Alicia. It was the perfect night although Joe was very much missed. I said a few thankyous to listeners on the Smiles Davis podcast but thanks again to all of you who listen to our Saturday morning show for you contributions, encouragement and indulgence. I've said it many times before but the peculiarly funny and intelligent people that listen to the show have turned it into something much greater than the sum of our stupid parts and we're very grateful. Now back to Big Mix Tape business...

Ìý

We're recording the next Mix Tape this coming Monday 24th, the theme is break up songs and I'm calling it The Splits. This is one of those mixes you make for yourself on the whole unless you've made it for the person you've just split up with to make them feel bad by listening to the depths of your despair in musical form. My own experience of The Splits was nights of indulgent misery spent compiling tapes to soundtrack further nights of indulgent misery. There's nothing like a few well chosen portions of musical melancholy to dignify a bit of heartbreak. I'd be keen to hear any stories that you have on the subject, particularly times that you may have handled a split badly, whether you were the one that got dumped or the dumper, as long as the stories aren't too miserable. I don't really have the requisite sincerity skills to do Our Tune.

Ìý

My partner in heartbreak for The Splits will be the actress, comedienne and Guardian columnist, Sharon Horgan whom (correct use of 'whom' here?) many of you will know from the sitcoms Pulling and Free Agents as well as shows like Broken News, Charlie Brooker's You Have Been Watching and Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive. Any questions you may have for Sharon about her work, this week's theme or anything else will as usual be cherished and put to good use.

Ìý

Finally a big thanks to the lady (I think the signature on her card says 'Roo' not 'Poo') who handed me this CD mix at the other night. Hard to beat the beautifully made fluffy beard cover and the lovely touch of the green foil wrapper from a Viscount biscuit (the king of chill biscuits of course) on the spine. Great music on there too, most of which was new to me (Kyte, Babble, M83, Imogen Heap, Telefon Tel Aviv etc.) Especially liked The Operator by Barbara Morgenstern and will try to play it on a future show. Thanks Roo! All other mix tapes and CDs gratefully received.

I think I can hear the delight-ment of Roo about this from here! I think I may have encountered her in tweet form before I too ran away from Twitter in fear, just something about it I don’t like, nothing to do with any of the lovely people on there. It just sort of intruded too much. I think it was the fact I could log onto it on my phone and, therefore, potentially ANYWHERE that bothered me. Too sci fi for me. Eeeeh.

  • Comment number 2.

Phew, break-up songs Ad? I type these while I cry into my keyboard and give my fingers electric shocks:

    1. Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime - Beck (from Eternal Sunshine OST). Particularly great for the re-breakup. You know the one I mean? Where you split up for one reason or another, then spend a long lonesome time before realising that you were better off together. And then after several arguments and much soul-searching you break up again?

    2. I Want You - Elvis Costello. Dear old Elvis really digs into your soul and pulls out some juicy nuggets of yearning.

    3. Song for the Dumped - Ben Folds Five. Pretty self-explanatory, but particularly good for that moment when you decide to act as your very own bailiff and repossess your own stuff (including stuff you don't really want but you just don't want them to have).

    4. I Want You To Know - Charlotte Hatherley. Quite perky and upbeat, it's a good song for that time you see your ex in the rain without an umbrella, while you cruise past in your *ride* with your new *honey* by your side. Also video directed by Captain Cornballs I think?

    5. Stranger - Presidents of the USA. My favourite band when I was about 12. Probably doesn't resonate with many people but it pulls my heart strings. A good one for those who go to strip clubs as a way of forgetting what just happened.

Anyway, that's enough outpouring of emotion, not sure my laptop can take any more. Excellent work on the shows so far, and again congratulations on the Sony!

A few more Bowie paint colours to round off:
Ziggy (Zaggy) Stardust - it's black white and sparkly zigzags!
Five Years (Old Bread) - a kind of browny-greeny sludgy colour
    Magenta Moonage Daydream

(and if you're wondering what I'm doing whittering away on a messageboard at 5 o clock on a Friday, it's because I'm stuck at home being ill and am bouncing off the walls)

Bye Bye Bye Bye Bye Bye Bye Bye Byeeeeeeee

    (OMG Wickwox!)

Holy crap, I was all snowed under with college stuff and I don't think I conveyed my congratulations 8|

well done, a derserved win... we miss you you know. Pre-recorded isn't quite the same x

  • Comment number 4.

HeHe! That picture is brilliant! I love it...
I am so sad that we didn't get to contribute to this weeks BMT with Garth he's so funny! Or maybe I missed something and there was a way to contribute???
Anyway once again I am agreeing with Bolly Knickers, Twitter, Facebook and the other one (whatever it's called) are definitely scary. My friend kept badgering me to join Facebook, so I opened an account and lasted about half a day before I closed it...shudder...too scary! People I barely knew in school suddenly wanting to be my friend, people I did know in school wanting to be my friend...no thanks! I shall just observe the ABMT tweets from a distance thankyou very much!
    Splits MIx Tape:
All Out of Love - Air Supply
Ella Fitzgerald - Cry Me A River
If You See Her, Say Hello - Jeff Buckley
Fire in My Heart - SFA
Can We Still Be Friends - Todd Rundgren

The End of the World - Skeeter Davis (slightly off key!)

  • Comment number 5.

    'One More Hour' by Sleater-Kinney

'Back In Your Head' by Tegan and Sara

'The Price I Pay' by Billy Bragg

'One Foot In Front Of The Other' by Bright Eyes

'I've Been Eating (For You)' by Bright Eyes

(And quite a few other Bright Eyes songs)

'All The Little Pieces' by Louis XIV

'Gone For Good' by The Shins

'So Long, Marianne' by Leonard Cohen

  • Comment number 6.

Congratulations on the award, Adam and team!

Here's five of my own fave break-up tunes:

    1) LCD Soundsystem - All My Friends

A silver-lining affirmation of those relationships that will last.

    2) Allen Toussaint - Get Out Of My Life, Woman

The break-up as a celebration! Who cares if I sobbed down the phone at her and her friends for hours, begging her to change her mind? That's the real world, baby! Toussaint on my headphones gives me a different version. It's funkier, happier and altogether more preferable.

    3) Muddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied

I don't get angry during the break-up process, but maybe I would do if I didn't have Muddy Waters to be angry on my behalf. A frightening thought.

    4) Naughty By Nature - O.P.P.

Makes the relationship merry-go-round seem a lot more fun than it really is.

    5) Bjork - Hyperballad

A song about caring for someone more than they know. Good for making your continuing crush on your ex seem dignified and heroic, rather than feeble and creepy.

I asked my partner what her favourite break-up songs were and she mentioned Guns 'N' Roses' Don't Cry. B-But... she was listening to that last night! Oh dear. I think she's got something to tell me.

  • Comment number 7.

This just has to be a Sparklehorse moment. He's the most hauntingly beautiful musician.

The majority of his music is amazingly depressing but I'd recommend it to anyone (especially you, Adam ;) )

The song for this compilation would be:
More Yellow Birds - from the "It's a wonderful life" album.

Or "Pig" for the angry times.
    Hugsies

  • Comment number 8.

    Question for Sharon Horgan:
The Guardian did an article on you back in 2007 titled 'The Funniest Woman You've Never Heard Of'.
Having won a 'Comedy' award since then do you feel this statement is still true or are you reconised more now?

    Splits!
Ooh Baby Baby - Todd Rundgren ...and the Todd tracks just keep on coming!

  • Comment number 9.

Of course I meant to say "recognised more now?" my typing's gonna get me in trouble again!
...and yes I am aware of the The Miracles version of Baby Baby but I like the Todd version best!

  • Comment number 10.

    Oooh break-up songs. Crikey.

'Hide and Seek' by Imogen Heap springs to mind, the lyrics are heartbreaking ('Oily marks appear on walls / where pleasure-moments hung before / the takeover / the sweeping insensitivity...'

'Go, Leave' by Kate and Anna McGarrigle destroys me every time (

Pretty much the entire back catalogue of The Cure (and also the very funny Adam Sandler parody in The Wedding Singer - about the last funny thing Sandler did -

(BTW, it is indeed Roo, not Poo :D Love the picture!)

  • Comment number 11.

    And a question for Sharon:

If you and Adam had a fight where the only weapons allowed were your respective Best Television Comedy Actress and Sony Gold awards... who would win?

    Roo x

  • Comment number 12.

My break up story comes from 1992 when I was 19. I was backpacking round Australia with my girlfriend. We had been working in different parts of the country for a couple of weeks but I was unable to live without her, so I spent my last few dollars on a bus ticket from Darwin to Cairns to be with her. After 2 days of travelling I arrived at the banana plantation where she was working. I could tell things weren't right. That night I secretly read her diary and found she'd slept with another fella. This was made worse by the fact that the next bus out of the plantation was in 3 days, so for 3 days the three of us shared a dorm. I had a guitar and seem to remember playing Knockin On Heaven's Door a lot to myself.

As my bus finally pulled away 3 days later I found Whitesnake's Here I Go Again playing on my walkman. I realise that this is 6 music, not Planet Rock, so perhaps I could offer 2 alternative break up songs.

    1) Shivers by The Screaming Jets - this was in the charts at the time, and I have not heard of the band since leaving Australia. Please look up the song if you can, it would be amazing to hear it again

    2) Got To Begin Again by Billy Joel from Cold Spring Harbor. This again is pretty obvious, but so are the feelings you get when you break up. If there's one thing that says 'I've been dumped' it's a man sat at a piano by himself singing 'I've got to begin again, but I don't know how to start'. It's also a beautiful melody.

    Loveyoubye xxx

  • Comment number 13.

    @MickeyMagicPants - what a tragic tale of woe :'(

    Is this the song?

  • Comment number 14.

I'm fine thanks Dr Buck! (kinda)

"peculiarly funny and intelligent people" Well that's very sweet, but you've got me wondering about the 'peculiarly' bit...*dances*

Btw, there's a star cast for the final 'Save 6 Music' protest at the Big British Castle's Broadcasting House in the Big Smoke [that's Lahhhhhnndan, you sliiiihgz] tomorrow. Including bands like Magic Numbers, and other acts who are being helicoptered in, under a veil of MI6-like top-secrecy, and a lorra lorra crazy 6 Music DJ lads an' lasses.

If it were at all possible Brigadier Buckeroo, I know the crowd would scream like boy-band girl fans if you could show your face for even 10 minutes. I know people are a royal pain in the old bott area after you've been asked to smile like a performing monkey for the 70th "I'm with a celeb, and therefore aren't I super-great?!" pic, but this is the Rabble Alliance vs The Mark Side!

Will have to get back to this blog post another time; right now I have to make like the White Rabbit in AIW...

  • Comment number 15.

I second Dr Rooobles, a very sad tale... does that song really begin with "I've been contemplating suicide"? Yikes!
Roobles you are now officially a star!
See you around, in Dr K's blog maybe ;)

  • Comment number 16.

Back for 10 seconds before skidaddling, just to add in Lou Reed 'Stupid Man' voice, "Purrlease sayyy halowwwwoh!"

  • Comment number 17.

hehe! Just noticed the Blodwyn Pig reference at the top! Very good!

  • Comment number 18.

Loving your Big Mixed Taped Podcasts!
My husband and I especially liked your interviews with Garth Jennings. Speaking of Garth Jennings, next time you have him on, would you please ask him if he knows anything about the next installment of "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy?" Also, if he was asked to direct the next one, would he?

  • Comment number 19.

@Dr Roobles Yes - that's the song! and @MargeGunderson, yes the 1st line is 'I've been contemplating suicide', but the next lines are 'but it really doesn't suit my style, so I think I'll just act bored instead' so I reckon that's a pretty positive message!

And although it is a tale of woe (made worse by the fact that someone stole my backpack on the journey) I am now happily married (to someone else) and still in touch with, and friends with, said heartbreaker. And she still feels bad about it.

  • Comment number 20.

    Dear Adam,

Can I suggest this one for the end of the mix tape?

I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor. Ever so slightly angry, for that moment when, after all those tears, you realise you're better off without him.

Love your big mix tape. Thanks!

  • Comment number 21.

@MargeGunderson I loves me some Dr K! Bequiffed bespectacled bedazzling man of loveliness that he is :D

  • Comment number 22.

Well I'm completely confused. Couldn't see anyway to know that Garth was going to be a guest again or what the Responsibly Sourced tape is going to be about??? Did I miss a meeting? Oh well Garth was a great guest last time so I guess he will be again.
    As the other thread seems to be deceased I thought I'd post my break up songs again here;

Bourgais Tagg (sp?)- I Don't Mind At All.

Del Amitri - really can't decide between Tell Her This & Driving With The Brakes On. (Driving feels so like the mood in a car journey I took with a newly ex-girlfriend its almost like the writer was in the car with me.)

EBTG - The Heart Remains A Child (the simple question, Why don't you love me?)

Joan Armatrading - I Really Must Be Going (but only for when you've been having an affair.)

Ryan Adams - Harder Now That It's Over (I'm sorry.... I'm sorry)

Liza Minnelli & PSB - So Sorry I Said

Level 42 - Leaving Me Now

Prince - How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore?

Longing For Lullabies - Kleerup featuring Titiyo (saddest video ever by the way.)

Don Henley - Heart Of The Matter (a proper adult break up song about realising it has to be)

Gerry Rafferty - Whatevers Written In Your Heart (the lyrics say it all, staying up all night talking but still leaving things left unsaid)

    Hall & Oates - She's Gone

    Sad Cafe - Everyday Hurts

And these last four are the WMDs of break-up songs. They should be approached with extreme caution if you've had your heart broken recently.
ABC - All Of My Heart (if you're an 80s teenager this was the song you broke up to.)

    Walker Brothers - No Regrets

Prefab Sprout or Tom Ford - Bonny (for me, the one that got away. The one that should of been)

Soul Family Sensation - The Day You Went Away

Hi again Marge. We agree on so much it's really scary. I've just signed up on Facebook as part of my marketing plan for my website. I really cannot see the point! I can reach all my friends through email, I found all the people who I went to school with via Friends Reunited, it just seems a bit... needy. I'm sure it will help spread the word for me but I just don't get it.

Blodwyn Pig?? Good but they can't compare to Gryphon.

  • Comment number 23.

"Desire As" by Prefab Sprout, "Guess I'm Doing Fine" by Beck, "Vanishing Point" by New Order, but most of all "ABBA On The Jukebox" by Trembling Blue Stars, which is a lovely and undeservedly obscure break up song which consists of a list of things done and places visited by the erstwhile lovers. It's what is left unsaid that is significant.

  • Comment number 24.

@sennas_elbow - is incredibly heavy, if it's really about what I always thought it was about. Less of a break-up song and more of a 'how the hell do we deal with this terrible event in our relationship' song ('Nothing's gonna make me / break from her side')

Not that I'm over analysing the lyrics or anything!

    Roo x

  • Comment number 25.

oooooo - self indulgent break up toons

    Oh darlin - the beatles

    mexican standoff - elbow

The weight of my words - Kings of Convenience

    Monument - The Frames

and of course, very cheesily - compares to you

aaaaahhhhhh the joys heart break music ;)

  • Comment number 26.

Having gone through a similar type of night recently:

Call It Off by Tegan and Sara is very helpful for such things.

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Adam

Maybe this is self-promotion of the most heinous kind but I wrote an article about break-up albums (slightly different genre but containing some of the best break-up songs) here:

I know you're a waffle fan and this has it, I flatter myself, in truly Belgian proportions.

  • Comment number 28.

Should have said that there are lots of nice versions of 'If you see her, Say Hello', of course the original by Bob Dylan, or there's a couple of nice ones by 'Moses Wiggins' and 'Rich Lerner and the Groove' that sound more folky!
Some Golden Oldies for the Splits Tape. I agree with Sennas you can't be strive to be too trendy and hip with a breakup tape:
    Smile - Nat King Cole
Walk On By - the lovely Burt Bacharach and Dionne Warwick
Ain't No Sunshine - Bill Withers
It's too late - Carole King

    Newer one:
Towards the Sun - Alexi Murdoch

  • Comment number 29.

Hi Dr Roo. I know what you mean about "Driving". Without going all 'our tune' on everyone, it was the line "hard to say you love someone & hard to say you don't," that cut to the quick with what was going on with me and that particular lost love. I think I know what its really about and that's a very difficult topic to talk about in a song and they do it really well. "Tell Her This" is excellent too, almost like the drunk babblings of an idiot as he tries to make up for the mistake he's made.(know the feeling!) Used to great effect in one episode of Scrubs.

Perta - I love Kings Of Convienence, glad you popped them on.

Hi Marge! Those are a couple of cheesetastic break up songs!

  • Comment number 30.

@Edward Randell - Nice article; I enjoyed those waffles very much.

@Sennas_Elbow - It's really not very 'cool' to admit to liking the Dels, but I still occasionally dip into their stuff, especially the darker songs. There was a b-side called that also fits the bill of breakups quite nicely (though for some reason I hear it more as a song about bereavement).

Wouldn't that be a good mixtape? Songs by bands that you're embarrassed to admit you like for whatever reason.

  • Comment number 31.

    @Roobles
That is one good idea good Dr Roobles! I like it...although I have to say that any music is good music if it floats your boat. Heck, most of my suggestions on here would come under the heading of "uncool" but in my world it's quality stuff. I would never be sniffy about peoples' taste in music, if you like it that's good enough for me!
It's great to come on here and see the variations (and similarities!) in peoples tastes and to discover some new stuff to wack on the old ipod. I usually try to have a little listen to some of the suggestions that people have made...I love it, old, new, cheesey, or cool, it's all good!

Cheers to all you lovely people on here and of course the fabulous Buckles and his guests!

  • Comment number 32.

I'm not listening to this one. I'll probably just sit in the bath, cutting myself (whilst crying and masturbating) instead.

  • Comment number 33.

    Break up tunes:

I'm Not Crying-Flight of the Conchords
Back To Black/Love is a losing Game- Amy Winehouse
    Irreplaceable- Beyonce (!)
Hit 'Em Up Style- Carolina Chocolate Drops (more of a revenge song than a break up song)
    Another Number- The Cribs
    Heartbreaker- Metronomy
Lost A girl - New Young Pony Club
Blue Skies- Noah and the Whale

Question for Sharon: Have you ever done the typical TV female breakup thing where you watch rom coms in your pyjamas while eating a pint of ice cream?

  • Comment number 34.

    Dear Adam,

first of all I'd like to say how much I enjoy listening to the show. The chat's with your guests are very entertaining and I've discovered a whole bunch of songs that I wouldn't have heard otherwise. :)

    Now, break-up story/song:
The only break-up song that springs to mind for me is Teitur's 'I was just thinking'. It's about a long distance relationship, which is something I can relate to.

My ex-boyfriend is from the UK and I am from The Netherlands, and as we were both quite young when we met and he was still in school, we didn't have much time to see eachother.
I could only visit him every 2 or 3 months and the times in between in which we talked on the phone and sent eachother letters became more and more difficult.
Finally he came over for the first time to visit me, and immediately I knew that something was wrong, though I tried to ignore it.
Not long after he'd returned home, he broke up with me.

I think Teitur's song encaptures perfectly what we were both feeling at the time and in hindsight I'm glad I only had to go through the pain of break-up once, instead of going through the pain of missing the person I loved over and over again.

    Question for Sharon:
Have you ever taken revenge on an ex-boyfriend or wanted to?
(For instance, there's the story about a woman who hid prawns in her ex-boyfriends curtain rail, which began to stink so much he had to move house... taking the rail with him.)

    Much love etc,

    Anouk

  • Comment number 35.

All very good suggestions indeed. I most thoroughly agree with the Bright Eyes finding their way onto the mixtape, in particular A Prefect Sonnet from the Every Day and Every Night EP is perfect for those angstly 18 year old emo break ups. I also thought of the recent Noah and The Whale album The First Days of Spring, perfect for that break up when you were in a successful indie folk band dating a fellow indie folk songtress, who left you the singer of another up-and-coming indie folk band. We've all been there.

However Boyz II Men's End Of The Road. When one is suffering from the break-up blues one need not care for there 6music-esque music cred, this gem of 90s r'n'b works a charm, especially if on repeat. For days on end.

    xx

  • Comment number 36.

    Hey Uncle Buck!

I once made a mix tape for a girl that inadvertently had lots of really sad, depressing, baleful breakup songs on it but it didn't occur to me until I'd made and assembled the custom jewel case artwork. As I browsed the tracklist and playtested the mix one final time, it dawned on me that I could never present this gift. Which was a shame because those were some great songs.

When we broke up I listened to it non-stop. It had become the totem to the beauty of our failure.

  • Comment number 37.

Congratulations on the gold award, it's well deserved!

    Devo - Girl U Want

  • Comment number 38.

Someone tipped me off that this show is being recorded *Jarvis radio voice* "LIVE!!!" right now, so I'm putting off the thing I actually should be doing to get a bit of participation in.

Break-up songs originally planned for the Tarbuckles show that never happened [shame, would've been fun] here:

    /blogs/adamandjoe/2010/05/next-weeks-guests.shtml

    Also, Martyn - 'These words'.

Others I'm sure, but I've really got to get the Helen off.

However, quick qs for Ms Horgan:-

Do you think Dubstep will be as big a global force in new popular music as Drum and Bass proved to be? Give reasons for your answer.

Also, is it ever morally acceptable to wear green with brown?

  • Comment number 39.

Is there a problem with green and brown? I'm wearing it right now!!

  • Comment number 40.

Shaggy always wore green and brown and he managed to star in several TV series and some feature films, so I'd say it's pretty acceptable.
(I'm talking about the owner of the talking dog btw, not the Jamaican rapper/singer. Maybe the green/brown combo is less acceptable if you want to be a rapper.)

  • Comment number 41.

    Hi Buckles,

Try "Coming Back Home" and/or "Without You" by Ellen and the Escapades.

Both a warm, literate and optimistic take on the breakup song.

    Looking forward to the show!

  • Comment number 42.

What got me wondering about green with brown was a comment by an art teacher when I was attending a class. He was pontificating on colour combos, and made an impassioned point about how green with brown was an absolutely ridiculous faux pax in most art, and presumably in any aesthetic sense. I was flummoxed, but moreover somewhat self-conscious, for I indeed was sporting green and brown right there and then. Though it was only my shoes which had the brown-ness, and they were out of his line of sight; so perhaps those words were from the heart, and not just an attempt to put the paranoia on me.

Anyway, what's fine with Scooby Doo style maverick Shaggy, is fine with me!

PS Hearty thumbs up for the pics of Team Sony and intimidating felt beard version of The Bux.

  • Comment number 43.

I've never had to do a Splits tape because I've never had a girlfriend and I'm in my 30s. But at least I never had to do a Splits tape! So who really wins? Hahahaaha.
