I think I can hear the delight-ment of Roo about this from here! I think I may have encountered her in tweet form before I too ran away from Twitter in fear, just something about it I don’t like, nothing to do with any of the lovely people on there. It just sort of intruded too much. I think it was the fact I could log onto it on my phone and, therefore, potentially ANYWHERE that bothered me. Too sci fi for me. Eeeeh.

Phew, break-up songs Ad? I type these while I cry into my keyboard and give my fingers electric shocks:

1. Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime - Beck (from Eternal Sunshine OST). Particularly great for the re-breakup. You know the one I mean? Where you split up for one reason or another, then spend a long lonesome time before realising that you were better off together. And then after several arguments and much soul-searching you break up again?

2. I Want You - Elvis Costello. Dear old Elvis really digs into your soul and pulls out some juicy nuggets of yearning.

3. Song for the Dumped - Ben Folds Five. Pretty self-explanatory, but particularly good for that moment when you decide to act as your very own bailiff and repossess your own stuff (including stuff you don't really want but you just don't want them to have).

4. I Want You To Know - Charlotte Hatherley. Quite perky and upbeat, it's a good song for that time you see your ex in the rain without an umbrella, while you cruise past in your *ride* with your new *honey* by your side. Also video directed by Captain Cornballs I think?

5. Stranger - Presidents of the USA. My favourite band when I was about 12. Probably doesn't resonate with many people but it pulls my heart strings. A good one for those who go to strip clubs as a way of forgetting what just happened.

Anyway, that's enough outpouring of emotion, not sure my laptop can take any more. Excellent work on the shows so far, and again congratulations on the Sony!

A silver-lining affirmation of those relationships that will last.

2) Allen Toussaint - Get Out Of My Life, Woman

The break-up as a celebration! Who cares if I sobbed down the phone at her and her friends for hours, begging her to change her mind? That's the real world, baby! Toussaint on my headphones gives me a different version. It's funkier, happier and altogether more preferable.

3) Muddy Waters - I Can't Be Satisfied

I don't get angry during the break-up process, but maybe I would do if I didn't have Muddy Waters to be angry on my behalf. A frightening thought.

4) Naughty By Nature - O.P.P.

Makes the relationship merry-go-round seem a lot more fun than it really is.

5) Bjork - Hyperballad

A song about caring for someone more than they know. Good for making your continuing crush on your ex seem dignified and heroic, rather than feeble and creepy.

I asked my partner what her favourite break-up songs were and she mentioned Guns 'N' Roses' Don't Cry. B-But... she was listening to that last night! Oh dear. I think she's got something to tell me.

This just has to be a Sparklehorse moment. He's the most hauntingly beautiful musician.

The majority of his music is amazingly depressing but I'd recommend it to anyone (especially you, Adam ;) )

My break up story comes from 1992 when I was 19. I was backpacking round Australia with my girlfriend. We had been working in different parts of the country for a couple of weeks but I was unable to live without her, so I spent my last few dollars on a bus ticket from Darwin to Cairns to be with her. After 2 days of travelling I arrived at the banana plantation where she was working. I could tell things weren't right. That night I secretly read her diary and found she'd slept with another fella. This was made worse by the fact that the next bus out of the plantation was in 3 days, so for 3 days the three of us shared a dorm. I had a guitar and seem to remember playing Knockin On Heaven's Door a lot to myself.

As my bus finally pulled away 3 days later I found Whitesnake's Here I Go Again playing on my walkman. I realise that this is 6 music, not Planet Rock, so perhaps I could offer 2 alternative break up songs.

1) Shivers by The Screaming Jets - this was in the charts at the time, and I have not heard of the band since leaving Australia. Please look up the song if you can, it would be amazing to hear it again

2) Got To Begin Again by Billy Joel from Cold Spring Harbor. This again is pretty obvious, but so are the feelings you get when you break up. If there's one thing that says 'I've been dumped' it's a man sat at a piano by himself singing 'I've got to begin again, but I don't know how to start'. It's also a beautiful melody.

Including bands like Magic Numbers, and other acts who are being helicoptered in, under a veil of MI6-like top-secrecy, and a lorra lorra crazy 6 Music DJ lads an' lasses.

If it were at all possible Brigadier Buckeroo, I know the crowd would scream like boy-band girl fans if you could show your face for even 10 minutes. I know people are a royal pain in the old bott area after you've been asked to smile like a performing monkey for the 70th "I'm with a celeb, and therefore aren't I super-great?!" pic, but this is the Rabble Alliance vs The Mark Side!

@Dr Roobles Yes - that's the song! and @MargeGunderson, yes the 1st line is 'I've been contemplating suicide', but the next lines are 'but it really doesn't suit my style, so I think I'll just act bored instead' so I reckon that's a pretty positive message!

And although it is a tale of woe (made worse by the fact that someone stole my backpack on the journey) I am now happily married (to someone else) and still in touch with, and friends with, said heartbreaker. And she still feels bad about it.

It's what is left unsaid that is significant.

@sennas_elbow - is incredibly heavy, if it's really about what I always thought it was about. Less of a break-up song and more of a 'how the hell do we deal with this terrible event in our relationship' song ('Nothing's gonna make me / break from her side')

Hi Dr Roo. I know what you mean about "Driving". Without going all 'our tune' on everyone, it was the line "hard to say you love someone & hard to say you don't," that cut to the quick with what was going on with me and that particular lost love. I think I know what its really about and that's a very difficult topic to talk about in a song and they do it really well. "Tell Her This" is excellent too, almost like the drunk babblings of an idiot as he tries to make up for the mistake he's made.(know the feeling!) Used to great effect in one episode of Scrubs.

@Sennas_Elbow - It's really not very 'cool' to admit to liking the Dels, but I still occasionally dip into their stuff, especially the darker songs. There was a b-side called that also fits the bill of breakups quite nicely (though for some reason I hear it more as a song about bereavement).

Wouldn't that be a good mixtape? Songs by bands that you're embarrassed to admit you like for whatever reason.

That is one good idea good Dr Roobles! I like it...although I have to say that any music is good music if it floats your boat. Heck, most of my suggestions on here would come under the heading of "uncool" but in my world it's quality stuff. I would never be sniffy about peoples' taste in music, if you like it that's good enough for me!
It's great to come on here and see the variations (and similarities!) in peoples tastes and to discover some new stuff to wack on the old ipod. I usually try to have a little listen to some of the suggestions that people have made...I love it, old, new, cheesey, or cool, it's all good!

first of all I'd like to say how much I enjoy listening to the show.The chat's with your guests are very entertaining and I've discovered a whole bunch of songs that I wouldn't have heard otherwise. :)

Now, break-up story/song:
The only break-up song that springs to mind for me is Teitur's 'I was just thinking'. It's about a long distance relationship, which is something I can relate to.

My ex-boyfriend is from the UK and I am from The Netherlands, and as we were both quite young when we met and he was still in school, we didn't have much time to see eachother.
I could only visit him every 2 or 3 months and the times in between in which we talked on the phone and sent eachother letters became more and more difficult.
Finally he came over for the first time to visit me, and immediately I knew that something was wrong, though I tried to ignore it.
Not long after he'd returned home, he broke up with me.

I think Teitur's song encaptures perfectly what we were both feeling at the time and in hindsight I'm glad I only had to go through the pain of break-up once, instead of going through the pain of missing the person I loved over and over again.

Question for Sharon:
Have you ever taken revenge on an ex-boyfriend or wanted to?
(For instance, there's the story about a woman who hid prawns in her ex-boyfriends curtain rail, which began to stink so much he had to move house... taking the rail with him.)

All very good suggestions indeed. I most thoroughly agree with the Bright Eyes finding their way onto the mixtape, in particular A Prefect Sonnet from the Every Day and Every Night EP is perfect for those angstly 18 year old emo break ups. I also thought of the recent Noah and The Whale album The First Days of Spring, perfect for that break up when you were in a successful indie folk band dating a fellow indie folk songtress, who left you the singer of another up-and-coming indie folk band. We've all been there.

However Boyz II Men's End Of The Road. When one is suffering from the break-up blues one need not care for there 6music-esque music cred, this gem of 90s r'n'b works a charm, especially if on repeat. For days on end.

I once made a mix tape for a girl that inadvertently had lots of really sad, depressing, baleful breakup songs on it but it didn't occur to me until I'd made and assembled the custom jewel case artwork. As I browsed the tracklist and playtested the mix one final time, it dawned on me that I could never present this gift. Which was a shame because those were some great songs.

When we broke up I listened to it non-stop. It had become the totem to the beauty of our failure.

Shaggy always wore green and brown and he managed to star in several TV series and some feature films, so I'd say it's pretty acceptable.
(I'm talking about the owner of the talking dog btw, not the Jamaican rapper/singer. Maybe the green/brown combo is less acceptable if you want to be a rapper.)

What got me wondering about green with brown was a comment by an art teacher when I was attending a class. He was pontificating on colour combos, and made an impassioned point about how green with brown was an absolutely ridiculous faux pax in most art, and presumably in any aesthetic sense. I was flummoxed, but moreover somewhat self-conscious, for I indeed was sporting green and brown right there and then. Though it was only my shoes which had the brown-ness, and they were out of his line of sight; so perhaps those words were from the heart, and not just an attempt to put the paranoia on me.

Anyway, what's fine with Scooby Doo style maverick Shaggy, is fine with me!

I've never had to do a Splits tape because I've never had a girlfriend and I'm in my 30s. But at least I never had to do a Splits tape! So who really wins? Hahahaaha.
