Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 15:29 UK time, Friday, 12 September 2008

cliff.jpgMonday:
Alan on the e-mail suggested a two part theme for tonight. It's angels for the 1st hour and devils for the second. Angel Eyes v's Devil Woman...you decide!

Tuesday:
It could be Stevie Wonder singing Sir Duke or Bowie's Song For Bob Dylan. Tribute songs is the theme so let's have your suggestions on the blog or by emailing getiton@bbc.co.uk

Wednesday
Today is the birthday of Hank Williams who would have been 85 if he'd lived. We're celebrating his birthday tonight by making 'country covers' the theme. From Elvis Costello to The Stones many artists have dabbled in the world of C&W. If we get enough good suggestions I promise not to play my recording of Telly Savalas doing I Walk The Line...

Thursday
With Elbow having just won the Mercury music prize it seems a good time to return to the popular theme of 'body parts'. From Lyin' Eyes to The Back of Love there's plenty of parts to choose from, I just urge you to keep it clean. I am still recovering from my Ken Dodd trauma of last time...

Brilliant themes for this coming week, Monday is going to be especially busy!

Can I be the first not to propose Robbie Williams.

  • Comment number 2.

Sorry that was probably a bit unfair......anyway an absolue must surely is Willie Nelson's superb Angel Flying Too Close To the Ground, one of the all time great performances and an original which has never been bettered. There are cover versions by some brilliant artists Raul Malo, Patty Griffin, Bob Dylan, Patty Griffin and most recently Beth Rowley.

Have a nice weekend everyone I am off to try and track down Joe the Jam Man!

    Norrie MacLean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 3.

Monday - Got to have Rod doing Angel, and if you want a real treat you could dig out the version of him doing it as a duet with Denis Law. Its on the 1974 Scottish World Cup Album. Yabadaba do we support the boys in blue!
    Other suggestions:
Road to Hell - Chris Rea
    Highway to Hell - AC/DC
    Broken Down Angel - Nazareth
    Devil Woman - Cliff
Devil Went Down To Georgia - CD Band.

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 4.

I'd say Devil Woman should be considered a must for the show on Monday. It's hip to be down on Cliff these days, but I remember Devil Woman as one of the best pop songs of the 1970's. He was on top form back then and knew how to make a good record.

I'd also like to suggest 'Tribute' by Tenacious D. It qualifies for several reasons:

1 - No swearing in it (as long as you play the radio edit which dips the vocal just at the right moment!)

2 - It has the Devil in it

    3 - It's a fantastic song!

    What do others think?

  • Comment number 5.

    Tuesday
Empty Garden - Elton John (John Lennon)
King of the Mountain - Kate Bush (Elvis)

  • Comment number 6.

    Monday

Angel Eyes - Wet Wet Wet
Honky Tonk Angel - Dolly Parton
Angel of the Morning - PP Arnold
    Angel of Harlem - U2
Talking to an Angel - The Eurythmics
Dance with the Devil - Cozy Powell
Devil Gate Drive - Suzi Quattro
Satan rejected my soul - Morrisey
Get behind me Satan - The White Stripes
    Devil in Disguise - Elvis

  • Comment number 7.

WEDNESDAY: Since you're celebrating Hank's birthday, you could play something from The The's album of Hank Williams covers - "Hanky Panky...or you could choose something (just a small excerpt might be best!) from "In Low Places" by The Chipmunks (including the likes of Alan Jackson and Billy Ray Cyrus). If you don't go for either of those choices I'll further suggest Ray Charles's cover of "I Can't Stop Loving You".

  • Comment number 8.

    Sorry Norrie. (Poetry yet)!
Robbie Williams' 'Angels' is a great singalong song, particularly when one is somewhat inebriated. Hic!

Thank you Adam for 'Broken Down Angel'
We don't hear enough Nazareth on the radio.

  • Comment number 9.

EC - PP Arnold is a great shout!! I was racking what is left of my brain for that one I'm sure I've got it on an Immediate Collection but couldnt be sure.

Scotch - been there too! My comment was really aimed at those who were at Justin Curries first night at Oran Mor and will remeber an amusing exchange with the audience.....Gene Pitney did a great version of that song!

  • Comment number 10.

Joe - are Tacks the boy disaster getting your vote this week?

  • Comment number 11.

Boom Boom Mancini - Warren Zevon - Not the Moon River man but a boxer

    Wed

World shut your mouth! Julian Cope

  • Comment number 13.

Doo Be Doo Be Doo - Frank Sinatra

  • Comment number 14.

    Monday:
"Patience of Angels" - Eddi Reader. I agree with the bids for "Broken Down Angel", "Angel" (ROD), "There must be an angel" and "Angel of the Morning". "EvANGELine" by The Cocteau twins is, I know, a tenuous link.

Max Romeo's "Chase the Devil" is a great track.

  • Comment number 15.

    Tuesday:
"Sweet Gene Vincent" - Ian Dury and the Blockheads
"Nightshift" - Commodores (Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson).

  • Comment number 21.

Great thanks Joe - a bit windswept thanks to Hurricane Gustav but all good! Great list from you as usual for this week and I would definitely like to hear Misguided Angel as Trinity Revisited was one of the CD's I bought in the states.

In addition to my request for Willie Nelson, and I'll try and keep my list short, omit tenuous links and cut down on the treacle:

Angels and Acrobats - Rod Picott from the most excellent Stray Dogs album

Too Many Angels - Jackson Browne

Patience of Angels - Boo Hewerdine (or Eddie Reader)

    Angel Eyes - Little Steven

    Mick Ronson - Angel No.9

  • Comment number 22.

Oooh interesting week. Juliefrom Edinburgh beat me with her suggestion of The The, the single from the album was 'I Saw The Light', so you could play that. On other days you could play...

For Wed's country Covers theme, does Country singers doing covers of pop/rock songs also count??
As Glen campbell has released album this year which he cover's Travis' Sing and Greenday's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) and would merit a play.

    Bryan

I thought that Angels and Devils the Following Day by Dory Previn would be good for tonight's show. But I listened to it last night and the lyrics are not playable on your show. Shame.

I did some research for that show and supplied a lot of the source material. "The Story Of Roxy Music". It is part of a DVD to be released at the time of the new Roxy Music album. I will be in the closing credits.

A Postcard from The Pearly Gates.

Hi Guys. Beelzebub here. Be sure to keep on my darkside tonight or the consequences may a little too hot for you to handle.

as master of all that is dark in this, and other worlds, I can get a little too much metallica, and porcupine tree have begun to needle my musical sensebilities, just a little.

So as I stand here at the pearly gates listening to Gabriel playing his favourite eurythmics choon, a poisonous longing has crept into my black, black heart, that can only be sated by the finest heraldic pop tunesmithery. If you angelic upstarts want to escape yer nether regions being scorched by the bad fire, ye best make sure a few of these cherubic choons grace the airwaves thenight

Boo Hewerdine - Patience of Angels.

Elvis Costello - Angels wanna wear my red shoes

Peter Gabriel - Games without Frontiers

Ben Harper - waiting on an angel

Beth Rowley- Angel flying too close to the ground ( featuring Duke Special) my personal favourite. does wonders for the heartburn!

Take heed! If you wish to ensure that you are not sent down to Georgia then my musical mysanthropy must be overcome with only the most heavenly of voices.

    I shall be listening!

    Kindest regards

    Big B

sorry no time to read everyone's suggestions today, got to get back to the kneading!!

    look forward to tonights show.

    Gordon

  • Comment number 38.

Some list JimFraeErskine, have you left enough room for anybody else to get anything in? Even Julie will be struggling to beat that lot.
Now let me play a wee bit of Devil's Advocate here (fitting this should be the theme tonight).
How about we call a halt to "googling the living daylights" out of Angels and Devils and just go for a couple of tunes each that we'd like to hear and which might get played.
It's not a competition to generate the biggest list, or is it???

  • Comment number 39.

Should be another interesting week. My suggestions:-

Monday 'Shes got the Devil in her heart' -Beatles and '( The angels wanna wear my) red shoes' Elvis Costello

Tuesday 'He was a friend of mine'(about JFK) - Byrds

Wednesday 'Help me make it through the night' Bryan Ferry

    EC

I know what your saying but sometimes enthusiasm takes over! Anyway having corectly told off for blogging on my hols I'm really trying hard to keep it to a couple of songs!

My first choice is by Jackson Browne, Of Missing persons, a tribute to his late friend Lowell George and written for George's daughters, really moving piece.

Another suggestion is Shine on You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd which was written for Syd barrett and would be fitting given the passing of Richard Wright today.

    Cheers

    Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

  • Comment number 44.

Phew, just back downstairs from the studio - what a busy show to kick things off! Thanks to everyone for their suggestions....and please PLEASE continue with your lists as they give Bryan and the GiO team a real wealth of music to choose from.

There are always popular frontrunners that are bound to feature but we really rely on you to reflect the breadth of music out there...and give us a reason to play it!

So bring on the shouts for Tuesday!

    Producer Mandi

  • Comment number 45.

Mandi - be careful what you wish for!!

    Norrie

  • Comment number 46.

As well as being entirely necessary for programmes such as this, themed lists of tunes are FANTASTIC fun to compile. I never just Google mine - I love scratching my head for an hour or so during my lunches coming up with sometimes off the wall songs and checking them out on Youtube to see if they really are as good as I remember! Then we spend the afternoon in the office rocking it out to brilliant tracks ahead of the shows.

Bryan - lang may yer lum reek!

  • Comment number 47.

Too bad about your lunches coming up.

  • Comment number 48.

    Body Parts:
I'd love it if you could find the country song "Trouble is a Woman" by Julie Reeves which tells a good story, and mentions shoulder, arm, eye, fists, face (and mind - does that count?).

    Otherwise:
"All I Want Is You" - Barry Louis Polisar (from the "Juno" soundtrack - mentions hand and arm).
    or
"Cheek to Cheek" - the SAHB version.

  • Comment number 49.

Great work Norrie. It isn't easy walking past your computer and resisting the urge to dive in a send a couple of e-mails/blog comments. However, your rehabilitation should be a shining example to all bloggers, especially those who just can't help themselves.

More therapy tips please Norrie. (Jim are you paying attention)

  • Comment number 50.

I think what EC is trying to say is that we could all generate long lists of songs per theme, but, maybe 90% of which you wouldnt necessarily want to hear. Keeping it to two or three would help you focus on the tracks you really want to get played and the reasons why. This would save us from scrolling down a long list only to find "just the last two please" at the end.
I'm developing a scroll down muscle in my right index finger!

I would exclude Roxy John from this as his IS a separate agenda!

  • Comment number 51.

Och, EC's just being a grumpy killjoy! Has he looked back on his own posts recently?

I like the sub-group that's sprung-up recently...namely the GIO mutual admiration society. Nice to know if someone appreciates your choices - and to let someone else know likewise.

  • Comment number 52.

    Settle down Julie.

Just trying to get a fair crack of the whip for all. I'm sure we're all capable of flooding the blog with song titles but what would be the point.

We'll keep BB and Producer Mandi supplied with lots of good stuff, just need to be selective with the stuff we'd like to hear and not just any old tune, cos it happens to fit the theme.

Much as I'd like to continue the debate I have to go, there's a multi million dollar operation to run here.

Grumpy Killjoy, might just resemble that remark.

  • Comment number 53.

For tonight I'd have to second the call for Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", and leave it at that.

Too many good keyboard players going recently, Hawkwind's Jason Stuart having passed away on Friday (and Bryan STILL wouldn't get them on)...

  • Comment number 54.

Tues. Lisdoonvarna-Christy Moore, it sure drops a few names including; Willy Clancy,Bono, Jackson Browne, The Chieftens, Clannad, Van The Man and Emmy Lou.
or Midnight Creeper- Elton John....." Tina Turner gave me the highway blues......"

  • Comment number 55.

EC: I'm settled. Hope you don't resemble my remark as much as I might think you're casting nasturtiums on my character. Any old tune indeed...Harrumph!!!! I only suggest tracks I'd like to hear - even the ones that other folk may think are pretty blimmin' awful. Let's call it quits and I'll get back to work too - got the defence of the nation to assist with :-)

  • Comment number 56.

    Defence of the nation?

Hope it's better than George Burley's.

  • Comment number 57.

    EC: LOL :-)

Oops, we've just shown how seriously we're getting on with our respective duties haven't we.

  • Comment number 58.

Guys I was trying my hardest to remember some really GREAT tribute songs and I think I cannot top this one... 'Life Is Real' by Queen.

Mercury et al were massive Lennon fans (aren't we all) and when they recorded Life Is REal they decided to make it sound as if it could have been one of the Plastic Ono Band's more ballady numbers - complete with the echo on the vocal, and even some of Lennon's own phrasing style.

It's a very touching song and the lyrics really do get to the heart of the man.

    Check it out.

  • Comment number 59.

    TRIBUTE:

Do the Barenaked Ladies鈥 songs about Brian Wilson or Yoko Ono count as 鈥渢ributes鈥?

    Hugh

  • Comment number 60.

Hugh - not sure about the Be My Yoko Ono track... I think BNL were being a tad ironic when they wrote that song! I don't know the Brian Wilson one - what's it called?

  • Comment number 61.

Its Brian Wilson - and its ironic too! Good though but not really a tribute!

  • Comment number 62.

    Bryan

Hard for me to see past Julie's shout (about a mile of blog above) of Ian Dury's Sweet Gene Vincent for tonight.

I'm very disappointed that my suggestion on the text "Angel No" by yello wasn't included and didn't even get a mention. "I don't wanna be your angel I wanna be your witch". Surely this was a tragic mistake???

  • Comment number 64.

Am I the only one hearing nowt? No radio and the online player is playing sport:-(

  • Comment number 65.

johnnynearduns: You're not the only one. I'm hearing a sports show on iPlayer even though it states Now On Air: Get It On... Hope to be able to catch the show with the play it again feature after the show...

"Jimmy Shand's on the Wireless" by The Big Elastic Band...is that the song you're thinking of?

  • Comment number 67.

Crivens! I've just had to dig out an old not-working-very-well FM radio!

  • Comment number 68.

Steve Forbert gig:The Caves is opposite Bannermans (Cowgate). I hope to be there, Norriemaclean says he's going...mini-GIO convention looming? I may keep schtum, keep the pink carnation and the copy of the Edinburgh Evening News in my handbag and just guess who's who - we'll see (sometime's more fun to be (almost) anonymous :-)

  • Comment number 69.

    I'd advise anonymity, Julie! LOL

  • Comment number 70.

I鈥檓 all for enlightenment and variety is the spice of life however if most of the more obscure requests don鈥檛 make the play list then lists on the blog are meaningless to the vast majority of listeners/subscribers... "less CAN be more"

    Wednesday

'Move It On Over' - George Thorogood's homage to Hank.

On their album 'Renegade' the Charlie Daniels Band do a fab fiddling rendition of
    ' Layla.'

Speaking of Clapton, who could deny that 'Promises' is a country song? You can practically hear a horsey, who's not for stopping, just letting his feet go clippity clopping!

  • Comment number 72.

    glenmiller,

after I stopped giggling at your previous comment, which took a wee while, I thought, somewhat belatedly, 'That'll be the humus.'

The only positive thing I can think of is at least the football programme did not have Chick Young on it.

For tonight I'd go for Kirsty McColl - There's a Guy Works down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvis (Country Version). An example of a 'pop' artist doing a country cover of her own song.

When I bought the single (27 years ago!) I thought that the country version on the B-side was better than the 'pop' version.

Don't think I've heard it since, so it would be good to hear it tonight.

    Cheers

Country covers 鈥 should be a brilliant show.

I鈥檓 going to nominate some Van Morrison for tonight鈥檚 show. Rodney Crowell鈥檚 Till I Gain Control Again has been covered by quite a number of artists and is a great song and I think that Van did an outstanding version on his album of mostly country covers Pay The Devil. Another great version is by This Mortal Coil.

Van also covered I Can鈥檛 Stop Loving You on Hymns to the Silence.

Other songs that I would just love to hear

Cowboy Junkies 鈥 I鈥檓 So Lonesome I Could Cry

Al Green and Lyle Lovett 鈥 Funny How Time Slips Away (more Willie Nelson covered!)

    Cheers Norrie Maclean, Renfrew

Frank Zappa's got a very slightly rib-tickling country song on "You Are What You Is", though maybe not before 9pm.

This week, Matthew, I'm going to be "HalfManHalfBiscuit Harry", so can we have their version of "Old Tigue", just to make up for the Jim Reeves one?

Clapton's "No Reason to Cry" album was pretty much country-based, and in particular the track "Innocent Times" has a soulful, not to say glass-shattering, vocal by Marcy Levy (much) later to become Marcella Detroit of Shakespear's Sister.

    Hi all

Can I suggest Beechwood Sparks cover of the Sade song "By Your Side"? Great stuff.

    Maria in Stirling

p.s. Jenny Lewis "Carpetbaggers" - great song I keep hearing at the moment but Elvis Costellos vocals are runining this track for me, sorry Declan fans!

  • Comment number 79.

Still no sign of last night's show on Listen Again. I doot its a gonner.
Hey Norrie! Nothing wrong with Chick Young. I arranged a match for his team, Dukla Pumpherston, down here a few years ago.

  • Comment number 80.

sorry guys, I think my suggestion might be the wrong way around for tonight, oops.
bit out of touch this week, normal service will resume soon ;-) still a great song though!

Adam - I didnt really mean anything by that. weak attempt at humour to make light of the fact we were missing our GIO fix! I know all these guys do great charitable work and you have to bear in mind I am traumitised after my holidays!

  • Comment number 82.

Andy, thanks for requesting Kirsty MacColl! I like the country b-side version of "Chip Shop," too. She also released a promo version you might not've heard called "There's A Guy Works Down The Truck Stop Swears He's Elvis" cos she knew we wouldn't know what a chip shop was in America....

    Bryan

How about Gary Gilmore's Eyes by the Adverts for tonight?

    Andy

  • Comment number 88.

Maria- disagree with you on the Carpetbaggers' song. I think Elvis's bit is good and draws your attention to a song that might otherwise have passed you by. Well not you maybe, but certainly me.
And what do you think about all the repeat themes we seem to be getting lately?

  • Comment number 89.

Adam...yeah, and not just repeat themes but "Angel of Harlem" 2 nights running this week!! It's up to us listeners to come up with interesting new themes though. I suppose folk who've not been listening for that long won't realise when a theme is a repeat one so will enjoy them regardless...and it could give those listeners prone to compiling lists a chance to get more records played (unless the same ones get played again that is :-)). I'm still waiting for my theme of bakery items to be picked - only cos I want to hear PANdora's box by Procul Harem (which I wish Bryan would pronounce correctly!!!).

  • Comment number 90.

Julie - I Only Have Pies For You

  • Comment number 91.

...and how stupid do I feel - I meant Procol Harum (just getting in before the real pedants).

  • Comment number 92.

Adam - Keep going - you are on a roll!

  • Comment number 93.

Fairport Convention "Who Nose Where the Time Goes?"

    Spiritualised (featuring ThighPaulSandra) "Broken Heart"
    Jimmy Reed "This is Hip"
Colon Blunstone and Dave Stewart "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted"

Agree with Julie to some extent Adam re repeat themes/new listeners but having seen next weeks I am back with you again! Are we giving Vic G an easy week or what?!
Re Carpetbaggers - maybe you are right, at least I am remembering it even if it is for the wrong reasons! (a bit like the "new" Boyzone single, good God help us please music police) Julie, I agree, its up to us to think up some good ideas, I emailed one into the team this week. Need a good night in the pub at the weekend, that normally induces all sorts of interesting theme discussions!

Keep up the good work everyone!!

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 96.

Good work? Just finished listening to last night's show and BB didn't play Blanket on the Ground - THE country cover song!
    Late suggestion for tonight's show

    Ankle of Harlem - U2

    for the hat-trick.

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 97.

Mr AdamRio - did you not get Blanket on The Ground played last week for another theme or am I even starting to dream in GIO-vision?!

My suggestion for tonight especially for BB, The Beach Boys, God Only NOSE

    Maria :-)

  • Comment number 98.

    Max B Gold suggests:

    Tin Soldier - Small Faces.

A classic belter of a song.

  • Comment number 99.

Maria - not for me it wasn't.

Anyway it was a joke (blanket /cover???)

  • Comment number 100.

Sorry Adam, I told you I wasn't firing on all cylinders this week.
I think BB has a love /hate relationship with you Adam, he has just called you grumpy on air but then plays your request, I think we definitely need a GIO Xmas bash to get all this pent up emotion released!! C'mon Barbara, I know you would love to have a shandy with us all!
