This week's ( revised) themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:03 UK time, Monday, 1 September 2008

Tuesday:" I believe the world should revolve around me..." say Little Jackie and on tonight's Get It On we are focussing on self centred pop. The theme is "me,myself, and I" so why not put yourself in the spotlight and get in touch with your suggestions?

Wednesday:

Steve on Skye suggests songs with 'car' in the title. Tracey had a fast one and the Associates had a white one in Germany. What are your favourite motoring anthems? Leave a comment on the blog or e-mail getiton@bbc.co.uk...

marjproops.jpgThursday:
Kirsty from Killie suggests 'problem page' songs as a theme. D.I.V.O.R.C.E, The Drugs Don't Work and all those songs for the broken hearted. I'll try and be Get It On's resident agony uncle ( I did work on The Jackie in my younger days!) so send me your problem songs and I'll do my best to answer them...

Great show tonight - great finish with the Three Degrees! Fabulous.

That said, the conspiracy theorists among us may suspect that the late theme switch is a subtle recognition that this is the last week of BB9: Bryan Burnett's Ever-Changing Get-It-On Themes!

Killing me softly - Roberta Flack
I'll stand by you - The Pretenders

  • Comment number 6.

Tonight's theme is proving lean pickings for my tired old brain. However, I can think of one good one which fits in - and could have been played as a "misunderstood song":

TIM MCGRAW - Please Remember Me.

This is a really beautiful sounding song but when you listen to the lyrics you hear that he has left his partner but still has the cheek to ask her to remember him. If that's not being self-centred, what is?

A couple of other suggestions are:

RIGHT SAID FRED - I'm Too Sexy
JANIS JOPLIN - Mercedes Benz (well, she is being greedy and self-centred!)

    Best Regards

    Angus
    Isle of Skye

  • Comment number 7.

Hi BB and Team and fellow bloggers
    A few idea for tonights "self indulgent" theme;

I am The One and Only - Chesney Hawkes (I met Chesney some years after his five minutes of fame but I was very, very drunk, and I don't think I was too polite about his (lack of) career, oh well, he must have had that alot! What was even funnier was my German friend who was with me who had no idea at all who he was :-))

All By Myself - Eric Carmen (Please God no Celine Dion)
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago
Can't Live - Harry Nilsson (guess this is more about the sentiment of the song not really the "me" or "I" content!)
I Want you To Want Me - Cheap Trick

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 8.

    Tuesday
    'I Drink' - Mary Gauthier
'Poor Poor Pitiful Me' - Warren Zevon

Come to think of it, they would work on Thursday's theme too.
I'd like to lend my support to the Tami Lynn
    song, JuliefromEdinburgh's brilliant suggestion.

  • Comment number 9.

...and I'd like to support Scotch-git's brillliant suggestion of "I Drink".

  • Comment number 10.

    Wed
No Cars Go - Arcade Fire

  • Comment number 11.

    Thursday

    The Jack - AC/DC.

Or maybe we should keep it for the clapping theme night mentioned yesterday...

  • Comment number 12.

    Tuesday

Harry Secombe - "If I Ruled the World" (that'd be a first?)
Queen - "We Are the Champions" (another typically egotistical blast of pompous mock-rock from the world's most over-rated band)
Elvis Costello - "Alison" (another one of those songs which sound so lovely, but really don't bear examination as to the motivation of the narrator "You went out with a mate of mine, and you're not in your prime any more, so I'm going to kill you"??)

  • Comment number 13.

    Oh and for tonight, Tuesday,
Mother of Mine - Neil Reid

  • Comment number 14.

    Re HarryFaeGatehoose:

If we're talking the BEST version of If I Ruled The World, it would have to be Tony Bennett (but not the version he did with Celine Dion!!!!!!!)

  • Comment number 15.

Wasn't "If I Ruled The World" one of Hilda Ogden's favourite tunes to sing while doing the dusting at The Rovers return?

  • Comment number 16.

On tonights show I think your gonna get a lot to choose from so I'm just going to go for 1 track..

Don't stand so close to me - Police

    Gordon

  • Comment number 17.

    Re JulieFromEdinburgh:

I'm not sure if that was one of Hilda Ogden's favourite tunes as I am not a regular viewer of Corrie but I do recall that she whistled it in one well known classic 1970s episode.

Any Corrie uberfans out there able to answer this question of galactic importance?

  • Comment number 18.

    Hello.

For Tuesday's show, how about 'Give Me Everything' by Magazine?

This single was released in the golden year of 1978 and it would be difficult to get more selfish lyrics than 'give me everything'!

Not one of the better known bands from Manchester, they none the less produced five excellent albums.

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 19.

How about "creep" by radiohead? Okay, not exactly bursting with jolity but it is a song about the singer and self loathing. Just thought I'd cheer everyone up...

    :o)

  • Comment number 20.

What about the following for Thursday night

Heaven knows I am miserable now - The Smiths

All the things I've Done - The Killers

Or the far far far more positive primal screams - Moving on Up

  • Comment number 21.

Katrina, Never ever request the Smiths.
    It only encourages him!

  • Comment number 22.

Nothing wrong with the Smiths (usually)... ;-)

  • Comment number 23.

Well thats two great songs I've been introduced to this week - the Colin Hay one on Monday and Mary Gauthier's on Tuesday.
Julie I do hope the latter isn't one you can relate to.

  • Comment number 24.

    Hi Bryan,

For tonight's car theme, I'd like to suggest anything by the Edinburgh band - "The Zephyrs" or the original version of Stay by Maurice Williams and The Zodiacs.

If yoy're stuck for something else, how about "Save Your Love" by Renault and Renato.

    Martin in Dunfermline

  • Comment number 25.

After all last nights talk of Sir Harry Secombe and Englebert Humperdinck (sp?), I was wondering if there's ever been a Roger Whittaker track played on the show?

    Raymie in Consett.

    MORE SMITHS PLEASE

  • Comment number 26.

A few tunes for tonights show

    Hocus Pocus - (Ford) Focus
Climd Every Mountain (Ford every stream) - Julie Andrews
    Heartache - The Cortinas
Jack and Dianne - John COUGAR Mellencamp
    Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
    Drive - The Cars

    (SEAT) Ibiza - The Vengaboys
Fans - Kings of (SEAT) Leon - Fans
    Champagne SuperNOVA - Oasis

  • Comment number 27.

    Cars...

Bowie - "Always Crashing in the Same Car"
    Hawkwind - "Death Trap"
John Shuttleworth "(Austin Ambassador) Y Reg"

  • Comment number 28.

Adam: Laughed out loud last night when I read your comment as I was just taking a sip of wine at the time. I do like a drink now and then but thankfully not to the same extent as Mary.

Raymie: Think we've heard short blasts of "Mexican Whistler" and "Durham Town" by Roger Whittaker though not the whole tracks.

Harry: I love John Shuttleworth (almost enough to forgive him for a song mentioning my name in a derogatory manner, which (I think) we hear too often on GIO. My Dad (Gordon) wasn't wasn't o'er-keen on that song either!!!).

  • Comment number 29.

    WEDNESDAY

Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera had a solo track caled "Car Rhumba"

The chorus to Roxy Music's "Re-make/Re-model" is the regestration number to a girl Bryan Ferry saw drive by every day and he didn't know anything about her and referred to her in his mind as CPL 593H

  • Comment number 30.

Oops that was meant to read as "...the registration number to a car owned by a girl Bryan Ferry saw drive by every day..."

  • Comment number 31.

RoxyJohn - I thought the registration number was for Ferry's own car...?

  • Comment number 32.

In support of the suggested farmyard theme, I thought I'd set you all a wee teaser:
What song title was inspired by what a Scottish farmer said to his vet on discovering that some of his livestock had lost their teeth?

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 33.

    Wednesday - Cars

A great opportunity to play Janis Joplin and the Full Tilt Boogie Band's
    Mercedes Benz.

    And Gerry and the Pacemakers'
    Audi You Do It?

    Not forgetting Canned Heat's
    Honda Road Again.

    Keep on revvin'!

    Martin,
    Buckie

  • Comment number 34.

My last try to get on your blog seems to have been unsuccessful but I repeat that no 'Cars' theme should take off without a bit of Chuck Berry:-

    No particular place to go,
    Maybelline,
    No money down,
    Route 66,
Jaguar and Thunderbird ( sounds good but not one of his better ones )
    Down the road apeice

  • Comment number 35.

Slightly confused about tonight's theme. I thought it was the word CAR in the title, could be wrong, so how about

    Fast Cars - The Buzzcocks

    Cars - Gary Numan

Jesus Built My Hotrod - Ministry (bit of a long shot this one but if Harry gets away with Death Trap, I don't see why not!)

Cheers for playing Dancing With Myself lastnight, which is exactly what I was doing when you got it on!

    Ali and the Winters
    Bonnybridge

  • Comment number 36.

Och Ali, don't make Bryan think there's any religion-related issues with Death Trap, I thought I might get one on tonight as it's been a while since Hurry On Sundown! (Are the Winters making the trip to Glasgow Academy for December's show by the way?). Ministry on Get It On would be a bit of an innovation right enough!

Julie - Mr Shuttleworth can do little wrong in my book either, his tennage infatuation with Gail Tilsley aside...

  • Comment number 37.

    Iknow - it's not cool - I don't care!

I'd love to hear Car 67 by Driver 67.

    And how about Thin Lizzy's

    Whiskey in the Car.

    Martin,
    Buckie

  • Comment number 38.

Just thought of a cracker for the 2nd half of the show Jeepster T REX

  • Comment number 39.

    Thursday

Help! - The Beatles - an obvious one, just hadn't seen it on any lists yet.

The Thrill Is Gone - B.B. King

  • Comment number 40.

    Thusday's suggestion

I don't want to talk about it - Everything but the Girl

    Jim

  • Comment number 41.

    For Thursday's theme-
    Tom Petty.
    Don't Do Me Like That
Don't Come around Here No More
    Stop Draggin' my Heart Around

Alison Moyet. Cry Me a River
Coco Montoya. Am I Losin' You
John Prine.Same Thing Happened to Me
    Steve Earle.Lonelier than This
Boz Scaggs. It All Went Down the Drain
    Linda Thompson. Insult to Injury
    Telling Me Lies

Mary Chapin Carpenter. The More Things Change

And if you could play Ruthie Foster's Ocean of Tears, I wouldn't complain about Matt Munro (or The Smiths) again...promise!

  • Comment number 42.

for all my colleagues in the East End community Mental Health Team Parkhead

  • Comment number 43.

Dont believe nobody has had a go at the teaser! (see 32).
As I was totally ignored last week with my Rupert Holmes suggestion, I'm going to nominate "Him" again. This time for the problem theme.

  • Comment number 44.

Come on everybody AdaminRio thinks your all ignoring him whilst he sits on his balcony sipping cocktails and staring out at yet another sunset on the Pan Loaf.

BB - please play Rupert Holmes tonight or we'll never hear the end of this one.

How about playing Paranoid by Black Sabbath tonight - just for AdaminRio.

  • Comment number 45.

Are these the kind of queries you looking for for your problem page?:-

    'Another Saturday night' Cat Stevens
[" I sense my BO is getting worse"]

    'Breathless' Jerry Lee Lewis
["My girlfriend is much bigger than me"]

    'Purple People Eater' Shep Wooley
["I have a small infestation in my garden"]

    'Wooly Booly' Clarence Frogman Henry
[ "How do I go about getting my name changed?"]

'Wasn't born to follow' the Byrds
[" I'm beginning to get delusions of adequacy"]

  • Comment number 46.

    Hello.

For the problem page show it has to be 'Virgin Lips' by Glasgow band The Just Joans.

How many bands are called after an agony aunt and mention Larkhall in the lyrics?

    or...

John Lydon could have contacted a problem page with the theme of Public Image Limited's first single 'Public Image'.

Here the former Sex Pistol rails against a media who have manipulated his public image. Should have contacted Joan Burnie!

    Cheers.

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 47.

    THURSDAY: Problems Page.

    Roxy Music
    "Could It Happen To Me"
    Bryan Ferry
    "Which Way To Turn"

  • Comment number 48.

    Hawkwind - Paranoia (Pts 1 and 2)
John Cooper Clarke - I Married a Monster from Outer Space ("Dear Cathy and Claire, I was in love with a being from another planet but no-one understands, etc")
Joy Division - almost anything, but "Atmosphere" or "24 Hours" out of preference
The Cars - My Best Friends Girl OR
Jilted John - Jilted John (same song different approach)
The Pogues - The Old Main Drag
Bronski Beat - Small Town Boy
The Associates - Party Fears Two
The Velvet Underground - Femme Fatale
The Velvet Underground - Waiting for the Man
The Velvet Underground - All Tomorrow's Parties

    Rock'n'Roll - adolescent essentially?

  • Comment number 49.

I think lots of people will be asking for Jilted John - It's on my list as well!

  • Comment number 50.

    Thursday

2 Larry Norman songs spring to mind:

"I've Got To Learn To Live Without You" (once covered by Petula Clark circa 1974) and "Lonely By Myself".

As for the car theme there's an old Deacon Blue song about a guy trying to offload a dodgy broken down car called "I Was Like That" which may have been the b-side to Closing Time... always makes me smile that song.

  • Comment number 51.

    Jim, Harry: Noooooooooooooooooooo!

  • Comment number 52.

Adam: Is your teaser about an Alvin Stardust song?

  • Comment number 53.

Julie - If we can stand Old Shep and They Shoot Horses Don't They I think Jilted John could have it's moment in the sunshine tonight!

  • Comment number 54.

Julie / Jim - it had to go on the list, but it's had enough exposure from Bryan over the years. Let's get some JoyDiv on to really bring us down for the weekend!

  • Comment number 55.

I understand Jim but I don't suppose you were ever the focus of (good-natured)ribbing because of the dreaded JJ song, which, I must confess I did buy when it was first released and still have in my dusty old singles collection at the back of the cupboard under the stairs (unplayed for ages as my turntable gave up the ghost years ago - must buy one of those new-fangled USB thingies...wonder if you can get any that play 78s too?). Suppose that'll mean it's a shoo-in for tonight then! Oh well! Still, It's better than Camouflage, Walking on Sunshine or Don't You Want Me Baby.

  • Comment number 56.

DOH! Do you know the 'Julie' aspect went straight over my head! Apologies!

  • Comment number 57.

    How about Subterranean Homesick Blues
by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Monotone Bob Dylan did it initially and it aint as good as the Chilli's version.

  • Comment number 58.

It's allright Jim. My Dad (Gordon) had it much worse!

  • Comment number 59.

Jan - I think if we are comparing versions of Subterranean Homesick Blues it can only be the brilliand and original BD version! What does everybody else think?

  • Comment number 60.

Brilliand???? Brilliant! (Shouldn't have had that extra pie at lunch...)

  • Comment number 61.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions for tonights theme.
Looks like it'll be a good show.

  • Comment number 62.

    Bryan Ferry "Nobody Loves Me"
Bryan Ferry "Heart On My Sleeve"

  • Comment number 63.

I'd love to hear the Just Joans and a wee bit of The Smiths Girlfriend in a Coma.

One In Ten, UB40, although Adam would say they couldn't write in to a problem page

Too Much Too Young, The Specials
    Problems, The Everly Brothers

    On a more upbeat note
    Baby Come Back, The Equals
I Lost My Heart to A Starship Trooper, Hot Gossip

  • Comment number 64.

I'm with Jilted John all the way.

Another song from around the same time where the band could have contacted an agony aunt is 'I'm (Not) In Love With Margaret Thatcher' by The Not Sensibles, where the singer goes red every time he sees her on TV. Brilliant!

    Raymie in Consett.

  • Comment number 65.

Surely Abba The Winner Takes It All is a contender tonight, surpised no-one has suggested so far...

  • Comment number 66.

    oops - surprised

  • Comment number 67.

I thought about putting the Abba track on my list but ddn't want it to be too long! There are so many tracks you could list for this theme.

  • Comment number 68.

    Dear Bryan,
I have this long standing problem which I'm hoping you can help me with.Well, when I say I have this problem it's really my friend who has the problem.
I consider, sorry he considers that he has a very catholic taste in music. However,he says he just can't get his head round the Smiths.(or Roxy music)sorry Roxy John.
    Can you help me/him?

  • Comment number 69.

Thats the one Julie. Top of the class.
My problem today is that last night's show isnt working on Listen Again.
EC / Kirsty - Is this pick on Adam day???

    Adam in Rio

  • Comment number 70.

Adam - of course not, we love you dearly.

  • Comment number 71.

So Adam and Julie, put us all out of our misery with this vet/missing teeth/Alvin Stardust malarky...you two have far too much time on your hands!
Yes fellow bloggers, BB was correct in his summizing (spelling?!) that I really didn't enjoy the Dead Horses song. I will own up to liking the depressing stuff as much as the next man but that and Old Shep had me wondering if the washing up water was deep enough for drowning in :0)

    See you next week!

    Maria in Stirling

  • Comment number 72.

Maria: Think of some common farm animals but say their names the Scottish way, then think of some of Alvin's hit singles...you'll get it. (btw - ever so glad I checked what I'd typed there and put a space in between Alvin's and hit before hitting the post comment button!!!)

  • Comment number 73.

Re: ' Poor Poor Pitiful Me '
On reflection, and having heard the song
on Thursday's show, I have to 'fess up.
EC is correct. Linda Ronstadt does it better

  • Comment number 74.

Thanks Julie, my ever so Scottish native hubbie explained it to me! Adam, you are a card....

  • Comment number 75.

    Re Adam in Rio:

I take it you are referring to My Coo ca choo by Alvin Stsrdust? LOL

That MIGHT be funny if co was plural - but it isn't! The correct Scots would be 'coos' or 'kine'...

But seeing as you are a sassenach I will let you off!!!!! :-)

  • Comment number 76.

Cannot believe that a problem page show did not include either the obvious, PROBLEMS by The EVERLY BROTHERS or the magnificent country song, thought yo like country music, Bryan, - STAN FARLOW singing I'M A TRUCK....now that is someone with a problem!

  • Comment number 77.

    Afew suggestions for next week:-

Monday 'Burning Bridges'- Mike Morton Congregation? and of course 'Burning Love' - Elvis

Tuesday 'Blowin' in the wind' ( Stevie Wonder version please ) and 'The air that I breathe' - Hollies

Wednesday A couple of Bobby Darin songs:-
'Splish splash' ( hear the water ) and 'Beyond the Sea'

Thursday About as near as you can get to the earth 'Diamonds on the soles of her shoes' -Paul Simon or even closer 'Barefootin' ' ( but can't remember whodunnit ) or what about 'When I'm dead and gone' McGuinnessFlint

  • Comment number 78.

btw,.....thought you would have known the car reference in Jan and Dean's LITTLE OLD LADY FROM PASADENA....the song is all about a little old lady driving her shiny red superstar car....she is the terror of Colorado Boulevard.

song is not about a mythical rover car or about drag racing

Might also have played their DEADMAN'S CURVE...which really is about drag racing....so there.

  • Comment number 79.

    re Jan and Dean:

"Bucket T" is about a car too, and I'm sure their song "Batman" must mention The Batmobile.

  • Comment number 80.

    JimfaeErskine

Your going to have to define Sassenach because if my geography serves me correctly I think you'll find that Erskine is a wee bit further south than Adam's place of birth.

You need to lighten up Jimbo it was just a wee bit fun and nothing to split hairs about.

Now what was it Maria was saying about having time on your hands.

  • Comment number 81.

Just a bit of fun EC - I may live in ERskine but I am not FROM Erskine! :-)

  • Comment number 82.

No point in putting in suggestions for next week yet - the forecast is for another hurricane in the Carribean....

  • Comment number 83.

    Consettkebab

I've asked for the Notsensibles a few times - we have to keep plugging away. They have reformed and been doing a bit of touring, and IILWMT is available on a free download from their website (or was the last time I looked!). Class

  • Comment number 84.

    Harry FG
