Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 09:00 UK time, Friday, 12 December 2008

I think we have another interesting week of themes lined up for you and two of them come from GIO listeners on the other side of the pond. It's a thrill to not only have people listening around the world but particpating in the show as well.
As always feel free to blog or e-mail in advance or give us a call during the show...

neworder.jpgMonday:
Following on from 'boy bands' and 'girl band' nights, Lyn from Madison suggests a night of bands with both! So it's mixed gender groups for tonight. Get on to the email or why not leave your suggestions on the blog...

Tuesday:
Mony Mony, Louie Louie or perhaps something by Duran Duran? Repetition is the theme and it's been suggested by Danielle in Canada.

Wednesday:
This month is the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission so 'space' is tonight's theme. From Rocket Man to Walkin On The Moon get in touch and Get It On...

Thursday:
It's a very self centred show tonight. The theme is artists singing about themselves. I Want To Break Free, All By Myself and Why Does It Always Rain On Me should get you started. Let's have your suggestions then....

    Monday:

    Patti Smith Group - Because The Night
    Talking Heads - Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place)
    New order - True Faith
    Prince and The New Power Generation - Cream

    Or is it a night of Bucks Fizz, Brotherhood of man etc....

  • Comment number 2.

    TUESDAY

    'Oui, we wee-wee' - The Soggy Bottom Boys

  • Comment number 3.

    For Tuesday Bowie also does a song called Repitition and two tracks which would be suitable Holy Holy and as said by Danielle Rebel Rebel.

  • Comment number 4.

    And of course Mr Bowie goes mad on space night!

    Space Oddity
    Starman
    Moonage Daydream
    Life on Mars
    Planet of Dreams
    Star (great track)
    Loving The Alien
    Hallo spaceboy

  • Comment number 5.

    Norrie,
    Are AC/DC coming to Glasgow?

    Or should that read

    Is AC/DC coming to Glasgow?

  • Comment number 6.

    I can reveal you should set aside 30 June for Hampden. Lots and lots of rumours kicking about but this is definite.

  • Comment number 7.

    Very revealing! I thank you.

    MONDAY

    'The Day Before You Came' - Abba

    'The Chain' - Fleetwood Mac

  • Comment number 8.

    Oh nice one with the mixed band theme.

    So we can get
    * Sandy Denny era Fairport
    * Tango in the Night era Fleetwood Mac
    * The Thompson Twins
    * Capercaille
    * White Stripes
    * Clannad
    * The Corrs
    * The Pixies
    * The Cranberries
    * Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil
    * Sonic Youth
    * The Go! Team

    And as it got requested but not played on 'one word' night:

    There are a couple of band collaborations too - Girlschool/Motorhead and Fun Boy Three/Bananarama spring to mind.

    Is anyone going to dare to suggest The Bangles?

    (interesting how these are mostly bloke bands with a female singer... more contrasting suggestions would be good)

  • Comment number 9.

    Scotch that was meant to be in Chick Young style voice! I tried to get mary gauthier tickets but failed, are you going to a lot of Celtic Connections things.

    I hope Maria got her Morrissey tickets!

  • Comment number 10.

    Are we going to have that Babylon Zoo thing inflicted on us on Space night?

    Bowie's a definite - Life on Mars would be good.

    And there's a Billy Bragg song too (actually, Woody Guthrie written and from the BB/Wilco collaboration, but I'm not complaining):

    Hope we're going to get the Rocky Horror classic Planet Schmanet Janet

  • Comment number 11.

    Alas, not a lot. I only have tickets for Mary Gauthier and Saint Andrew.
    It's like the fringe in Edinburgh; so much on you want to see, so little free time, so little money.

    Isn't Sarah Millican's accent incredibly sexy?

    I think I'm in lurrrrrve!!

  • Comment number 12.

    She is funny too Scotch!

  • Comment number 13.

    Norrie,
    If you promise not to sing along with Mary, you're welcome to my spare ticket.

    (Sarah Millican can't make it. She's staying in that night to wash her hair).

  • Comment number 14.

    Scotch - very kind offer and happy to take you up on that! I dont sing, I promise!

  • Comment number 15.

    CaptRamius - great list! I too was thinking of The White Stripes, The Pixies and Sonic Youth. Time to think up some more.

    Norrie - Have you heard of The Dears? They are from Montreal and have a bit of a Morrissey sound (they've actually opened for him in the past). They would also count toward Monday's theme. A good introduction would be their single 'Lost In The Plot'. Enjoy!

    Scotch-git - Happy Friday!

  • Comment number 16.

    I notice Cerys Matthews is playing at Celtic Connections this year (says Julie before running away to hide from the ensuing vitriol).

  • Comment number 17.

    Danielle - happy Friday! No I have not heard of the Dears, I will check them out (this blog is costing me a fortune lol!).

    I of course omitted The Cowboy Junkies from my previous list, but thought 'Cause Cheap Is How I Feel would be a great track for Thursday!

  • Comment number 18.

    @julie

    Oh, yes, of course Catatonia.

    Mulder and Sculley this time? As they're a mixed band too...

  • Comment number 19.

    Tuesday evening:

    Middle of the Road's 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep' or 'Soley Soley'

    On second thoughts, don't bother

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 20.

    Danielle,
    A Happy Friday to you and yours!

    I wonder if this celestial conjunction thingy is responsible for my mood-swings this week?

    Nah, I'm just a temperamental git!!

    I'm pretty sure I heard Eddi Reader sing 'Moon River' on the radio at the end of a gig recorded in Glasgow 3 or 4 years ago. Can anyone confirm this?

  • Comment number 21.

    Norrie
    Now my heart is full! Tickets secured, will I see you at Stirling??
    Maria

  • Comment number 22.

    'When the heart is full, the eyes overflow'

    omigod, I need help!!!

  • Comment number 23.

    Maria - great I was starting to worry about your silence! You sure will and I am not sure wether to ask Scotch along or not?

    Serioulsy impressed with Richard Hawley!

    Scotch Eddie Reader - Moon River she performed on the Other Voices Robert Burns tribute with Boo Hewerdine ....I am fairly sure.

  • Comment number 24.

    Norrie, that'll do for me.

    WEDNESDAY

    'Moon River' - Eddi Reader

    Norrie, Re: Stirling
    I feel the return of the cantankerousness. Thank you!
    And now, back to work................

    Tuesday

    The Cocteau Twins "Pearly Dew Drops Drops"

    Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin "It's My Party (and I'll Cry if I want To)"
    Chesney Hawkes "One and Only" (only joking)
    Freddie and the Dreamers "You Belong to Me"

  • Comment number 26.

    TUE (before I forget):

    "I can see for miles" (and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles etc. etc. Oh Yeah :0) ) - The Who.

  • Comment number 27.

    Tue:

    "Tell Her This" - Del Amitri

  • Comment number 28.

    Oh no! Not Space again as a theme!

    It'll just be a matter of time before someone asks for that Clouds across the Moon song again.

    And worse....it'll get played!

  • Comment number 29.

    Clouds across the Moon? What is that??

  • Comment number 30.

    AFR pps I cannot get over thought of Human Leauge night (quite like them but cannot imagine 2 hours worth)!

  • Comment number 31.

    Thurs: Why does it always rain on me? (Insert Glasgow joke here, while I make a run for it)

  • Comment number 32.

    @norrie

    I'm presuming this:

  • Comment number 33.

    CaptRamius - that is eh interesting.

  • Comment number 34.

    Yeah, I'd blanked it from my memory (along with the 1978 World Cup)

  • Comment number 35.

    Adam #28

    Ah kain......

    DC in Cellardyke

  • Comment number 36.

    Norrie, I think SG would love a night in the Central Belt with Mr Moz, come on SG, you know it makes sense ;-)

    AFR;Clouds Across The Moon is a great track, but I can confirm we did have Space as a theme already this year as it was my suggestion and we did indeed have that played.

    Zoom by Fat Larrys Band always a good one to hear!

    Have a good weekend everyone, the Xmas season of madness is upon us, out yesterday (all day!, Norrie you would have been proud as would Hoppolocos) and then again tomorrow..... feel like I have been hit by the 11pm train from booze central!!

    p.s Apparently Boyzone are covering Tom Baxter's "Better" - really??!

  • Comment number 37.

    Maria - surely not! Boyzone that is, not the 11pm from booze central!

  • Comment number 38.

    Yes surely Norrie....reminds me of that old joke...don't call me Shirley ;-)

  • Comment number 39.

    Where is Salt Spring Sherri?

  • Comment number 42.

    Glad tidings of Great Joy.

    All of this weeks themes are repeats from sometime this year.

    However, BB is working on the theory that we're all getting old and dottery so chances are we will have forgotten by the time they roll round again.

    A cunning plan as Baldrick would say.

    A tune for Monday and/or Tuesday -
    Mama's and Papa's - Monday, Monday

    Wednesday
    The Firm - Star Trekkin

  • Comment number 43.

    Tuesday

    Never, Never by the Assembly (Feargal Sharkey)

  • Comment number 44.

    EC #42:

    Aha!...he's obviously forgotten about my alleged themes dossier...I do believe you're right, with the possible exception of Monday (if I had a moustache I'd twiddle it before exiting stage left)

  • Comment number 45.

    AFR was going to make a list I thought?

    I dont notice the repitition I must admit....must say more about me than anything else. Focus Norrie, focus!

  • Comment number 46.

    ps before scatter brain forgets to add to the Fleetwood Mac suggestions:

    Fleetwood Mac - Over and Over

    fits two themes and good song.

  • Comment number 47.

    Julie #44
    If you had a moustache you could twizzle I think you would be easy to recognise at the meet up in January ;-)

    EC, nice to see you back on the blog again. BTW, I think you meant "doddery" not "dottery"....BB may think we have all got bad memories seeing as all we ever seem to hear from certain bloggers is how much wine they have been drinking!!

  • Comment number 48.

    Ouch - that hurt!

  • Comment number 49.

    Maria #44 ha ha ha, that'd work right enough...I'll start knitting one now :0)

  • Comment number 50.

    #47 Maria - I was posting at various stages last week. Just ask your pal Julie. I was accused of "having a go" at her on several occassions on one day!!!!

    No I meant dottery. It's a local take on your English doddery.

  • Comment number 51.

    #44 & 45

    The 'Head Boy' will be on soon to correct me if I'm wrong about the repititions.

  • Comment number 52.

    EC - No, He won't. You knock yourself out. Have a great time!

    Re: Theme repetitions.
    I do remember the Me, Myself and I theme. I guess that is similar enough to Thursday's. I'm too new to GiO to recognize any other repeats. I guess we either need that 'past themes list', or the long time listeners have to come up with some 'new' theme suggestions.

    Norrie: That Cowboy Junkies song would work nicely. I see that Joe has them on his list too!

  • Comment number 55.

    nice shows next week bryan....

  • Comment number 56.

    WEDNESDAY

    'Dan Dare (Pilot of the Future)' - Elton John

  • Comment number 57.

    WEDNESDAY

    'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

  • Comment number 58.

    Joe - tremendous suggestions as ever. I hesitated over E Street Band but given the relationship between Bruce and Pattti and how it all woked I think you have picked the perfect track! I think she murders some of his work but her solo albums are great. Strange.

    Is it me or is Monday's theme a bit vague? Does the group need to feature male and female vocalists or could it be like the aforementioned Zutons featuring Abi on the sax? Am I taking this too seriously?!
    Off to get a life......

    Maria

    p.s. Angus and Julia Stone - Mango Tree - I am determined BB will play them one day after skipping them for Fruits and Brothers and Sisters nights!!

    I think I have Norrie's Grumpy Hat on today ;-)

    Maria,
    It's the celestial conjunction. Keep drinking.

    Monday:

    well as it's bands night this might be my chance to get Roxy Music 'Re-make/Re-model' played on the radio

    Tuesday:
    Roxy Music 'Cry Cry Cry' (easily their worst song)
    Roxy Music 'Rain Rain Rain' (almost their best later period song)
    Bryan Ferry 'Shame Shame Shame'

    Wednesday:
    When Bryan Ferry wrote 'Ladytron' he asked Brian Eno to make a sound that would be like the apollo moon landing. Eno's synth and Mackay's oboe create the perfect haunting desolate soundscape.

    Thursday:
    Bryan Ferry
    'Can't Let Go' (written when he was in the verge of giving up......)
    Bryan Ferry 'Nobody Loves Me' (which I am sure some forum members will agree with him he hee)

    Great Bowie list. You know how much a fan I am and I think you hit all the spots with yor alter ego list!

    Mad Man Moon - Genesis
