Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 10:15 UK time, Saturday, 2 May 2009

230506runstart.jpgHere we go again with another brand new week of themes. Tuesday's theme is one that several of the blog regulars have been asking for so let's get the thinking caps on. I'll try and post a list of the words on Tuesday in case anyone is stuck.

Monday:
For those of you lucky enough to have the day off work, our theme is all about the great outdoors. Mr Blue Sky, Move Any Mountain or even Green Grass of Home? You decide...

Tuesday:
November rain, Oscar Peterson or Papa Don't Preach. All of tonight's suggestions come from the phonetic alphabet. Email your suggestions or why not send a tango-echo-xray-tango during the show...

Wednesday:
I Can See Clearly Now sounds like a must for tonight. ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio Scotland listener Caroline has texted in to suggest a theme for all the opticians out there. Looking forward to some good puns on this one...

Thursday:
As 14 thousand of them line up to run the women's 10k we're looking for songs to get the girls going! Among their number will be our very own Miss Babs! What are the songs that might persuade her to pick up the pace and head for the finish line? Tune in on Thursday and hear about her transformation from producer to athlete!

#16 never heard of it, you sure he is not giving you a rubbish tune to amke you appear foolish? What is his blog moniker?

  • Comment number 21.

#16, I'm a bit confused here. Why should someone who talks about her 'hubby' sign off as 'Miss' Babs? ;-)

I think we need to be telt.

Anyway, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of the great outdoors as far as some bloggers are concerned. The word 'Green' seems to mean an away from the norm for some. You guys need to get out more.

Thursday - Songs to get the girls going in the race!

It's possible to tell a wee story by song title for this theme...
Firstly, put a snippet of Chariots Of Fire in the montage!

    Then...

What kind of race are the ladies taking on?
    10K HI - Al Jarreau

It's not a short one, is it?
The Long Race - Bruce Hornsby

Motivation is required when embarking on a serious race!
Let's Go - Ramones (MUST be played!!!!!!!!!)

Why are they putting themselves through this?
Race For The Prize - The Flaming Lips

What will they need to do to win?
Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger - Daft Punk (pure cracker!)

And what is the objective in taking part in the race?
Across The Line - The Robert Cray Band
    Winning - Chris Rea

What might be won by the successful participants?
    Glittering Prize - Simple Minds
    Consolation Prize - Orange Juice

And has ProducerBabs done it in a quick time?
The Best Of Times - Styx (of course!)

Of course, really, everyone who runs the race is a winner so...
We Are The Champions - Queen

And then of course, what happens next?

DC has a point. I for one rarely get out of the city.

    MONDAY

'Desert Skies' - Marshall Tucker Band (Charlie Daniels guests on fiddle).

This song evokes wonderful memories of working on an Israeli kibbutz in the Negev desert. There are few things in this world as beautiful as the desert underneath a full moon.

Re #21...DC Ask Bryan! I only discovered Thursday evening why he refers to me as Miss Babs.
And regarding the space and planets theme....I can't believe you are wanting us to revisit a theme! Usually you complain if we do! But yes -we are going to do the planets theme again mid Summer to coincide with the anniversary of the moon landings.

  • Comment number 43.

#41, Babs, I'd assume it's to do with your youthful enthusiasm on the show!

    MONDAY theme:-
Was trying to think about the various different outdoor scenarios, here's a few..

Seafarers:- Everybody's Talking at Me - Harry Nilsson
The chorus makes it sound very pleasant, is it this good DC?

Landlubbers:- Been to Canaan - Carole King
... green fields & rolling hills etc. (beautiful song this)

Air-travellers:- The Big Country - Talking Heads
The scenery as described from an aircraft window.

    Beach-bums:- Mozambique - Bob Dylan
Magic in a magical land from the legend..

According to the forecast it's gonnae be a wet one so number 3 looks the most appropriate at this point

  • Comment number 45.

    OK,

Bryan, why do you refer to your producer in this way?

(DC puts on a David Jacobs voice)

'Well what does the jury think? Hit or a Miss?'

By the way, it's Scotch who suggested the spaced out theme

    DC

  • Comment number 46.

    DC,

Your memory is rather selective, is it not? I seem to recall your suggestion that we mark the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, a suggestion which was rightly ridiculed by our correspondent in Brazil. Adam knows that Maria is like Snoopy in yon tree, constantly ready to pounce.

    I salute your attempted divertibility!

  • Comment number 47.

    Monday:

    * Runrig: Healer in your Heart (a *huge* amount of Runrig is about landscape)
    * Sawdoctors: Will it ever stop raining? (bleedin' typical for a bank holiday, but then again, I'm working today...)
    * Tommy Dorsey: Blue Skies
    * The Orb: Little Fluffy Clouds
    * Jane & Barton: (ideally the a-capella version, not the one with the dance beats)
    * Peter Gabriel: Solsbury Hill
    * Stereophonics: Long Way Round
    * Geoffrey Oryema: (which was the title music to Long Way Down)

If we're going to have Mr Blue Sky, is there any chance of having ?

and one that's perhaps a wee bit more on the pop-side than you'd expect from me:
    * All Saints: Pure Shores

  • Comment number 48.

For today Monday 4th I've concentrated on that that floats my boat...

    T G O - DEPECHE MODE
    I DON'T HAVE THE MAP - IDLEWILD
    DIE ON A ROPE - T. DISTILLERS
DOWNHILL RACER - EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL

and for those out there on a day like today

MISTY MOUNTAIN HOP - LED ZEPPELIN or THIS EARTH THAT YOU WALK UPON - SIMPLE MINDS

  • Comment number 49.

What was that song by The Troggs again. Was it I Can Hear The Grass Grow?

It was great. A good one for the show on Monday maybe.

Why didn't Wet Wet Wet cover this one instead?

  • Comment number 50.

    MONDAY:

    Roxy Music
    "Sea Breezes"
    "Virginia Plain"
    "Sunset"
"Prairie Rose" (From the album "Country Life")
and as we are in Scotland "Rain Rain Rain"

    Bryan Ferry
"Walk A Mile In My Shoes"
"This Island Earth" (My choice form this list)
    "Windswept"
"Taxi" with the recording of rain from Ben Nevis credited on the sleeve.

    J.O'B.

  • Comment number 51.

Tuesday... this theme was orginally Julies shout was it not,

I guess we'll not get to hear the likes of Hector Nicol's 'Bravo Juliet' so how's about the Bloodhound Gang's 4 for 1 namely 'Foxtrot Charlie Uniform Kilo' GIO!

  • Comment number 52.

#46 Scotch, I refer you to your own comment #35. My understanding was that Babs' comment #41 referred to #35 and my reply #45 referred to your #35

I salute your attempted stir and inability to order chinese food

Yes I suggested that the 40th anniversary of the moon landing should be comemorated, but not necessarily with a 'Space' theme (it could be rockets / 1969 etc). That anniversary does not take place for another two months though so BB probably has it in the pipeline anyway.

    DC

  • Comment number 53.

    Monday -

Indigo Girls - Get Out The Map

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - Into The Great Wide Open

  • Comment number 54.

    #52

Yeah, but while you were being serious I was laying on the sarcasm with a trowel!
I can hardly be blamed for Miss Babs' literal interpretation of what was obviously a wind-up.

    >8-D

    anyway, how's your wee boat?

  • Comment number 55.

SG - You should know better than to even jest about the Space / Planet theme!
(BTW, Maria does get upset when fun is poked at Clouds Across the Moon).

Talking about repeat themes, is it now policy to have "inspirational songs" everytime GIO want to promote a running race?
I mean, Babs' kids' school sports will be coming up soon (or, like the youth club, are they uncool too?) and so another excuse to play Dont Stop Me Now and Rocky and Flashdance themes.

    Monday:
    Tried this 100 times before,

The Saints - River Deep Mountain High

  • Comment number 56.

#55, ah kain..... Here! What about 'School Sports' for a theme?

#54, engine water pump removed and away for servicing so no sail today, or even this week.

    :-(

Anyway, I'm expecting the outdoor activities forecast to use the term 'gey coorse' when referring to the outer Firth of Forth this evening. It would be a bit bumpy out there I have to say. I'm therefore spending 'great outdoors Monday' with a cup of green tea listening to the Tom Morton show.

I'm hoping to haul the creel I have set off the skellies and to find a lobster to add to the one I caught yesterday. Lobster salad with a glass of Chablis: good 'summer' food!

  • Comment number 60.

Scotch and Madmac - You're right...I did suggest Tuesday's theme (on the blog anyway) and, as the author of said theme, may I make an impassioned plea for 'Echo Beach' NOT to be played...my office job can be less than exciting (and I didn't have a day off today) and I don't like to be reminded of that during my leisure-hours too often (once about every 5 years is ok).

  • Comment number 61.

    #60

Yes indeed, I hope Echo Beach is NOT played too. It's such an obvious choice and I tend to prefer at least a good balance of the less obvious. That's why I went for

    TUESDAY:

Bryan Ferry recorded an album called 'Alphaville' around 1996-7 but hasn't released it. The title track is one of his best songs ever and it's a shame that it has been left on the shelf so far.

Roxy Music have an instrumental called 'India'

    J.O'B.

  • Comment number 65.

    #64

RJ - I don't suppose any of the tracks off that album are available anywhere? Maybe some obscure EP with the odd track off it?

  • Comment number 66.

'Hiroshima' & 'One Way Love' ended up on 'Frantic' and 'Cruel', 'Nobody Loves Me', 'Fool For Love', 'San Simeon' where re-recorded for the 'Frantic' album. 'This Love' ended up on 'Slave To Love Best Of The Ballads' and 'Sonnet 18' ended up on the Diana Tribute album. DJ Hell has just released a mix of 'You Can Dance' on his latest album leaving 'Love War', 'Alphaville' and a version of The Drifters 'I Don't Want To Go On Without You' are still unreleased in any form.

Ferry has recorded a lot material over the years that he has not released including a sunning version of John Lennon's 'What Ever Gets You Through The Night' He did an album called 'Horoscope' and some of the material was re-recorded for 'Mamouna' but most of it still on a shelf. Some more Dylan covers left over from his last album, a Serge Gainsbourg track and a Little Feat song are among the unreleased covers he has done. His version of 'Send In The Clowns' and Phyliss Nelson's 'Move Closer' are good reasons why unreleased tracks don't get chosen for release.

  • Comment number 68.

    #66

Yes that's what I mean - do you know of anywhere we can find the stuff that was not reworked or released elsewhere? I'e heard most of the tracks you mentioned and will start searching for the ones I haven't.

  • Comment number 69.

    #68

The only stuff that has been released and officially made available is the stuff I mention above. All the rest of the music is gathering dust on the shelves of his studio.

  • Comment number 70.

    TUESDAY

Having considered a list including Jethro Tull, 10cc and Tom Lehrer, I have decided to stick with one request for Tuesday.

    'Romeo' - Dolly Parton

with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Kathy Mattea, Pam Tillis and Tanya Tucker.
(Billy Ray Cyrus is the token man, the Romeo of the title).

Poor Bryan needs a fix of Country music. This'll have him a-rompin' and a-stompin'

    "ch-ch-ch-ch-check it out!"

  • Comment number 71.

    #70

Scotch - I didn't know that track at all. Just gave it a listen and it's excellent!

  • Comment number 72.

    #71

Yeah, don't know why it was never released as a single. Stateside, maybe?

  • Comment number 73.

    TUESDAY:

Started working my way through the alphabet then realised I don't actually want to hear all those songs so...here's a smaller selection:

    Coasters - 'CHARLIE' Brown

The Inmates - 'The Walk' (mentions the FOXTROT)

    Caravan - 'GOLF Girl'

Graham Parker - 'HOTEL Chambermaid' - he really ought to get a play on GIO sometime.

INDIA Arie and Pink - 'I am not my hair'

Steve Forbert - 'ROMEO's Tune' (Monday's theme reminded me of Steve Forbert's gig at Edinburgh's The Caves - his comment about the venue was that the only place he'd played that was older was...well...outdoors). Stop Press! Just seen that he's playing there again on 5th June, and Glasgow on 30th May - well worth going along to see him.

    Anyway, the lobster was good.

My great grandfather and my grandfather both as boys had the job of making and fixing the creels for the fishermen out of Montrose and Ferryden. What's the big joke, DC? I mean, that was BIG laugh you had there.

Can I second working for the YANKEE dollar by the magnificent Skids. Great track.

    DELTA Lady - Leon Russell

and for the Bowie trivia here is an absolute shocker:

OSCAR - Over The Wall We Go (praise be that he didn't release his own version, it is worse than the Gnome, Oscar was actually Paul Nichols Bowie in there on b.v somewhere) and sadly I had no need to google any of that.

Support for Julie #73 (and others)for GOLF Girl and ROMEO's theme. Golf Girl would fair take me back - not many hallucinogenic songs about the golf course!
Or how about HOTEL Yorba by the White Stripes, ROMEO is Bleeding - Tom Waits or Last TANGO in Paris - The Gotan Project?

#80, Thanks Norrie and yes "Gnome" was a bit bizarre!
BTW good shout on the Tom Petty outdoors track, sometimes I feel like a rebel without a clue too!

Glad you picked Romeo's tune. I had it on my list too but would be delighted if you got the shout for it so I could get Sierra by Boz Scaggs on. Where's he playin in Glasgow.

I'm sure I heard the outdoor forecast that you requested and at the right time as well.

Talking of Gazebos there was a guy called Gazebo who had a big Euro hit in 80's called I Like Chopin. Cue hot balmy evenings on the adriatic drinking espressos and sambucas.

Sounds good. Might go if nothing else has been organised for me that night.

    TUESDAY:

How about a 'whisky' song for tonight...

Smoke and Strong Whiskey: Christy Moore
    Streams of Whiskey: The Pogues
The Whiskey Ain't Working Any More: Travis Tritt

  • Comment number 88.

#87, I don't have the list with me, but have we had a drink theme before? First hour could be whisky / whiskey and the second could be foreign alcoholic beverages (tequila, rum, gin etc)

#85 I'm informed that what I built is technically an arbour, not a gazebo. As far as I'm concerned, it's a shed with an open front that you sit in

BRING ME THE SHED OF ALFREDO GARCIA!

Could be a bower. Which could also be a bow anchor.

Of course, a wooden anchor is about as much use as a chocolate kettle.

    Norrie,

    1) How wozz Mozz?

    2) Has Maria abandoned us in favour of text and/or email?

I think we should be telt!

  • Comment number 95.

Scotch I am pleased to report that Morrissey was excellent! Really great set list and fine performances. He had the good sense of humour to show the video to Sparks Lighten Up Morrissey as the curtain raiser!

I think Maria just is tied up with work and shift patterns to be honest -no doubt she will confirm that! I can however report that she was in with the nutters at the front! As befits my more senior years I was discretely positioned at the rear of the hall.

    U - Uniform

For the phonetic alphabet show, I Love A Man In A Uniform by The Gang of Four. Hear the band are back together.

    Great theme.

    Phonetic Alphabet:

I salute JFE's comprehensive coverage, and won't attempt to match it (if only because I'd then have to request Echo Beach, and I try to avoid a beating on Tuesdays), so:

    * Alphaville: Big in Japan
    * was going to suggest The Who: You Beta You Bet, but then realised that I'd gone Greek
    * Pink Floyd: Echoes
    * Wilco: Kamera (from Foxtrot Hotel Yankee)
    * Chris Isaak: Blue Hotel
    * The Killers: Romeo and Juliet
    * Mike and the Mechanics: Another Cup of Coffee
    * Billy Bragg: Ontario Quebec and me ( is pretty cool too)
    * Tom Waits: Tango Till They're Sore (probably the 1st Waits track I ever heard)
    * Fairport Convention: John Barleycorn (for making Whisky)

(incidentally, are we running the show like the recent Top 20 one?)

  • Comment number 98.

Alphabet Supplement - had entirely blindsided Mike Oldfield, so either
    * On Horseback (hat-tip: JFE for the reminder)
    * Pictures in the Dark
    would be lovely indeed.

    Tuesday's phonetic phrolics ....

    Shirley Bassey - "Golfinger"

Paul Young - "Wherever I lea' ma hat, that's my home"

    :)

#89, He brought me the Shed of Arbour Gazebo instead...

#97, not a chance of squeezing in 26 songs if Bravo Alpha Bravo Sierra is on tonight

For all ex-rugby players, 'Zulu Warrior' is a good song. Probably not get played though

    :-(
