Next week's themes...

Bryan Burnett | 19:58 UK time, Friday, 25 June 2010

lena.jpgOk folks, here are the themes for next week. As always don't be afraid to ask for something surprising. After all, who thought The Incredible String Band would make it to the playlist? ( certainly not me!)

Monday
I found out last week that one of our listeners named her daughter after the Stones' song Angie which got me thinking that it might make a good theme. A former 大象传媒 producer had two cats called Smokey and Robinson and how many wee boys were named Dylan after the much loved singer songwriter. Who or what did you name after a famous pop star? Do you have a little Robbie in your household or can you be found encouraging Lady Gaga to leave her deposits in the litter tray?

Tuesday
What have Robin Beck, Arthur Brown and Lena Martell all got in common. It's one hit wonders on tonight's show, a theme which was suggested on the blog by Kene Gelly. From the true one offs, to the ones you'd gladly never hear from again. The folk who troubled the charts just the once on tonight's GIO...

Wednesday
Photography student, Two Bob Smith suggests all things photographic as theme. From Duran Duran's Girls On Film to Def Leppard's Photograph we are celebrating life through a lens.
Don't forget Aztec camera and hopefully you'll be delighted with your Snap! Tune in see what develops...

Thursday
I'll be prying into your shopping habits tonight to ask what was the first and the last album you bought. It's a theme that's inspired by a feature on the new Edith Bowman album show. Just how much has your musical taste changed over the years or are you still sticking by those old favourites? Get in touch with the LPs you will never forget and the latest acquisitions that are never off the CD player...

Oh well, I was just begining to enjoy the Incredible String Band when it was cut off.Happy Birthday Scotch!

In all the discussions on this blog there has been an ongoing longing for the less obvious. In response, 'Pigs Will Fly' was created, but you can tell there is a reluctance and hesitation in Bryan's approach it - it appears as close to the end as possible and tonight was cut off early.

Some time ago I was arguing that there was a need for 'another show' to satisfy a pent up demand, evident on the blog, for less obvious tracks without the division by genre that appears elsewhere on the station.

    Tonight, we got it.Edith Bowman.

The first hour of her show tonight included lots of stuff that many of us would be happy to hear and discover. It's the best hour of music I've heard on Radio Scotland since I accidentally started listening to GIO about nine months ago.

Just wish I'd thought pushing the idea harder and asking for the presenting job.

For Monday: I named my fish Count Grishnackh after Mayhem's former church-burning, homicidal bassist.

For Wednesday: It has to be "Clinical Colostomy" by Aborted, with the classic opening line "Posing people who are dead that he killed for pictures", describing Jeffrey Dahmer's penchant for photographing his murder victims.

For Thursday: I have only ever listened to brutal death metal. The first album I ever bought was "Eaten Back To Life" by Cannibal Corpse. The most recent was "Degenerate" by Trigger the Bloodshed.

We got our dog from a rescue place. All the dogs had a post-it note attached to their cage showing their name (how they knew them all if they were strays is beyond me - perhaps some were made up, and the others - maybe their previous owners left them there with a few details to help the poor little beasts feel at home with their next owners) Ours had two. "Ben" on one "Previously known as Flynn" on the other. Yes, he'd been there before. We decided Ben didn't suit his swachbuckling, gung-ho spirit and plumped for Flynn instead. I don't know if he was named after Errol (maybe that's where he originally came from) but for the purposes of the theme tonight I'm going to pretend we named him after
    Johnny Flynn instead.
Lost and Found also sort of suits the dog rescue thing. or - seeing as you mentioned trouts tonight, there is also Brown Trout Blues
Johnny and his band have worked with Mumford & Sons. This lad is going to be big.

    MONDAY

My wee cat is called ZiZi, partly because he's a top cat (and that's not contrived for the show - see posting 2nd March!)

    Legs - ZZ Top

and my previous cat wasn't named after anyone, but he was called Joey and with monotonous lack of originality I greeted him every day I came back from work with

    Hey Joe! - Jimi Hendrix

I had a friend whose rubber plant was called Robert

The Beauty Within - Robert Plant

Robert Plant - a great admirer of the Incredible String band.
No point in asking why a song that people clearly wanted to hear should have been cut short - especially since it's also clear we'll never get to hear any more ISB songs on GIO.

    as for albums (Thursday)

I'll have to own up and say the first, which I almost certainly didn't buy myself since I was about 3 at the time ahem, and I didn't get pocket money, but which was definitely mine, was The Young Ones. And the last was, of course, MoJo - nearly could've worked El Rayo X in again, but in the interests of honesty etc.

    Living Doll - Cliff Richard

    I Should Have Known it
    or
Pirate's Cove - Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers

I may change my mind on the TP tracks, don't know the album well enough yet.

    Tuesday

How are we defining one hit wonder?
    Top 20, 30, 40, 50 or 75?
If artists join together and have a hit does that count (even if they had other hits on their own - eg Elton John & Kiki Dee)?
What if the band change their name but not the line-up? (eg Martha and The Vandellas?)
Or somebody leaves the band and has solo hits?

Just to have a look at some examples on Joe`s list (not having a go Joe!)

Because the night - Patti Smith Group (had a couple of other singles in the lower reaches of the chart)
If I had words - Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley (Scott had another single (GO) that charted).
Substitute - Clout (OK - just the one. South African, so topical too!)
Everybody's got to learn sometime - Korgis (If I had You got to number 13)
I won't let you down - Ph.D. (Does Jim Diamond count too?)

Do we need a ruling or am I just being pedantic like SG?

GIO has never let the facts get in the way of playing anything they feel like playing, probably The Proclaimers.

JfE could give us guidance here, but he's gone and we are a lost tribe, wandering in the desert of interpretation.

We did this theme last Autumn. I remember it because I got Rosie Vela's 'Magic Smile' played.I shall request it again.

Probably the greatest one hit wonder is 'Spirit In the Sky' because it's been a one hit wonder for more than one artist.Norman Greenbaum is the daddy, though, literally and stylistically.

I have to say, I can understand why BB felt the need to cut ISB. Dearame...

How come Edith B. has been relegated to Radio Scotland? Those cuts?
Or more vengeance being reeked by Jfe on East Neukers?

  • Comment number 28.

#21 - Adam - the definition I was aiming for (but clearly failed to adhere to) was only one top 20 entry. I know where you're coming from, but I suspect BB and the team will be keen to retain the flexibility of an open interpretation (recognising that permits the best range of songs to be played = the best possible show).:)

A few more (if rather predictable) thoughts for Wednesday:

How men are - Aztec Camera
    Sylvia - Focus
Jumpin' Jack Flash - Rolling Stones

I'm not that up about ISB either, it doesn't really do it for me, but I've got hang up's about 'folk' music.I'd listened to it on spotify earlier in the day and thought they'd had one too many mushrooms. It was beginning to sound better on the show when it was abruptly ended.

There's a certain contemptuous casual disdain for the audience in this regard, which, without trying to sound po faced about it, I find I can't admire.

It's a great format, GIO, but it's hardly impartial.

If they are going to run with Pigs will Fly, then it should be properly embraced.Squeezing it into the last ten minutes and cutting when time is short seems openly disrespectful of the audience to me.

It raises expectations but delivers them grudgingly which is worse than never having raised them at all.No one feels satisfied with the outcome.

I'd rather have a decent PWF slot that that fab five thing. I don't understand the point of that.

Evidently, no one came up with five sings about peas?

  • Comment number 32.

There should be no need for any patronising PWF slot. The programme should play what people ask for instead of being an Eighties revival show.

#32 - Glen - Agreed! That's the most sensible comment from a man I've ever seen on this blog.

    #14 - Scotch-git - A belated Happy Birthday. Thanks for the request!

For Monday - I can't think of anything. Plenty of kids around here called Jason & Kylie! Mmmm. Maybe not.

For Tuesday & Wednesday - Me And The Elephant - Gene Cotton

It works on Wednesday for the line

"So I burned all your pictures except two or three

The one by my bed and one on my TV

And the one that I always carry with me

    Everywhere I go."

    A sad wee song.

    :o(

  • Comment number 34.

I'm moved to respond the the ISB remarks! Sorry the track was cut short because that's how it was when I downloaded it! Not because we were running out of time, not because we didn't want to play it all, and not because we were trying to make some point. Plain and simple, a download fault. And just a gentle reminder, the PWF feature was an idea generated on this blog which we thought was fun and fits in well with the ethos of a fun Friday, it's not meant to be "patronising" - it's meant to be a bit of entertainment and interaction - add to that the chance to hear something that folk feel is overlooked. And yes Glen you are correct, Get it On isn't an 80s revival show, but it's a decade that clearly generates a good amount of requests and every single track played on the show is requested by our audience.
Thanks for the suggestions for this week so far.

I have a feeling that for many of the requests from these pages the team just don't "get it". This may be because they have only recently been recruited from school and have only heard about the Beatles in passing from their grandfathers or perhaps they were traumatised by an accidental childhood over-exposure to The Laughing Policeman which rendered them subject to flashbacks. Bryan is certainly well up on country music but sometimes I feel he would be happier with two hours of Bronski Beat.

Would it hurt the damage the nation's psyche to hear five minutes of Frank Zappa among an hour and a half of Duran Duran?

  • Comment number 40.

    #39 last sentence: exactly.

It's not what is played so much as what seems to be off-limits. I do think it's patronising, and to many people would be inexplicable that names such as Dave Gilmour, Frankie Miller, Frank Zappa and ISB should have to be lobbied and begged for in order to get a one-off play on a radio programme that is listened to by many people for whom these names are important part of their musical heritage, not some off-the-wall oddities of whom few have heard.
I told a friend about the programme, urged him to listen to it, but had to admit that he would not be hearing at least two of his favourite singers. He was completely baffled.

  • Comment number 41.

#21 I'd like some guidelines please!
eg would Venus - Shocking Blue count- I think the only one to make the British charts, but they'd others in the Dutch charts.

And would, say, One Toke Over the Line - Brewer & Shipley count since it was in the US charts?

And would Malcolm Middleton - We're All Going to Die count since it is his only chart song, but he's still working hard and would be hoping for more success? i.e. before the inevitable!

Help ma boab, it's a minefield right enough.

  • Comment number 62.

I apologise, Babs, for misunderstanding that a real technical fault had occured on the ISB track.

I presumed the abrupt ending of the track was part of the general wind up between the team and its mutinous and unruly bloggers. I think (and I'm desperately trying not to be po faced here)Bryan's sarcastic comment that 'it only had 12 minutes to go' led me to that view.

So although I unreservedly apologise in the narrow measure,in the big picture I do think there is a kind of disdain or sufference displayed in the squeezing the item in at the tail end of the show.

A casual look through last week's playlist doesn't suggest an 80's revival show, it must be said, but my feeling remains that there is still a huge bias in favour of the obvious and the marginalisation of the less obvious - and, of course, the presenter and producer are human too - they have likes and dislikes.Who wouldn't play things they are drawn to?

I have always ascribed this, overall, to the pressure of the intercative nature of the show.

I think in the pressure of the evening, it is an overwhelming temptation to respond to instant texts and f***book messages which means going with the more obvious choices because they are, 'obviously' well known to the presenter and the producer. That's why campaigns start.

The 'trouble' is that the bloggers have given their requests some considerable thought usually well in advance of the show and, possibly quite wrongly, 'feel' that their choices are obscured though they are not obscure requests in themselves - simply more consdiered and less obvious.

I think the difference is that the instant response folks first request music to fit a theme on the night(this doesn't mean they care for the music) wheras the bloggers request music that they care passionately about,(which happens to fit a theme).

The difference is subtle, of course, and the management of that balance on the show is delicate, no doubt - but the technical fault on Friday seems to have exposed the feeling (down here,at least) that that 'balance' is still to be achieved.

'Pigs Will Fly' is one way of redressing the balance, hence the gnashing of teeth, presumption of collusion, and heaping of criticism when an unfortuitous 'technical fault', inevitably, brought down the Incredible String Band.

    Quite incredible, really:-)

    Fleetwood Mac - Sara

Leaving mother and child to get some rest, I left the Queen Mother, saundered up Byres Road and found 'Sara' going round in my head. A chinese meal in the Amber wouldn't shift it, so I decided to go with the flow.

The first Mrs Hannah had other ideas, however, and the child remained un-named for fully three weeks, when she had to be readmitted for health complications. We compromised on 'Sarah'.

Sadly, after three years of battling, Sarah's health complications proved overwhelming.

And then we discovered there was really nothing much we could agree about, at all, (which is quite 'normal',I discovered years later).

It was long ago and far away,of course, but the song still evokes memories of Sarah and her short but happy life.

No need to rehearse all this on air, though, but I would be chuffed to hear it.

    Still my favourite one hitwonder:

    'Magic Smile' - Rosie Vela

It's just so well put together, but then, it's Steely Dan is disguise so no explanation required.

    and a close second is

'Spirit In The Sky' - Norman Greenbaum

the original, and best, even if it is a nice Jewish boy boy singing about Jesus -..... but, he's not the only one...

Marc Cohen - Walking In Memphis also a one hit wonder?

Well, I'm day 'umpteen' of my self-inflicted World Cup Teatime Challenge. It's getting a bit trickier the easy option of USA, England, France + Italy are out of the cup. Going by tonight's match, It's looking as if I may need some help from Adam...any suggestions (food...not those skull-splitting cocktails Norrie's so fond of)?

#84 Sorry, I should explain Every day during the World Cup, I'm cooking something from one of the countries with a team playing that day. Sorta wish I'd never begun but, I did, and now I'm determined to make it to the final!

Henri - I can't add anything to what anyone else has said about your request, just concurring with what DC and gaie said. A beautiful song.

#84 don't ask Adam about anything for a couple of weeks. He's still thinking of 1966 reasons not support his home team.

    Shame

    He's been away too long

Go down to your local butchers and get him to cut up a pig into bite size chunks. Its important that you get the tongue, ears and feet too.
Leave all this to soak overnight. Put on a big pot of black beans to cook slowly, add in the pig.
Serve with rice, kail, pumpkin and cabbage.
    This is a simple Feijoada.

Can`t remember if you and daughter are vegetarians though. If you are, just leave out the pig.

Joe is the Blog cook. He has a few Brazilian recipes.

#84/93 - I'm afraid I only have first-hand experience of making one Brazilian dish, barreado, which is a slow-cooked meat stew from Paran谩 State, Brazil.

The essential ingredients for barreado include meat cuts, bay leaf, cilantro, black pepper, and other herbs, which are tied in bundles and removed from the pan before serving. (Google for a more detailed recipe)It is prepared in a clay pot whose lid is sealed (traditionally with a sort of clay made from wheat or cassava flour. After about 8-12 hours of cooking barreado is served over cassava flour, with banana slices. The meat juices are mixed with the flour to make pir茫o - a kind of gravy.

Ca莽ha莽a is the potent rum-like drink traditionally served with barreado.

    Enjoy!

Think I could get away with a take away from Nandos...or is that just if Portugal progress?

Think I've enjoyed the Japanese meal best so far...and the pavlova the other week! Japan again tomorrow.

    A tale of two Sara(h)s...

DC, good luck to yours on her excellent adventure
Henri, what can I say, the biggest fear is something happening to one of our kids. Very sad!

My cousin went out with a Sarah a few years ago. The Phil Lynott 'Sarah' was his song. All was going well till she discovered his dad had married a Sarah and his grandad had also married a Sarah.
    She left skid marks.

#82 Brilliant finish to a first class move!
