The most talked about track on the show tonight was Michael Marra doing Neil Gow's Apprentice. There were many nice comments about the song and there is such a lot of affection for Michael Marra amongst our listeners. England may have Alan Bennett and Judi Dench but Michael is definitely one of our national treasures. If you are a fan then search out the clip of him performing From A Jack To A King that I talked about on air. It's from a TV show called NB that I used to present with Janice Forsyth in the '90s.
It's a terrific performance and it looks like he stepped straight out of a honky tonk in Texas in the 1960s. I wish the rest of the show was available online as it featured Edwyn Collins, James Grant and loads of others doing country songs. Somewhere in my house there's a copy on VHS but that's not much help is it?
Wednesday's theme is 'musical matches' which celebrates pop's great couples. I'd quite like folk to request a pair of songs from a pop couple (Chrissie Hynde and Jim Kerr) or maybe a single song featuring a couple like Sonny and Cher.
Email your couplings to the usual address or leave a message on the blog.
pushing my luck (again) - I don't have the same depth of musical knowledge as other bloggers, so I just go for the blindingly obious. In most cases.
Two couples, one band. Love them or loathe them, they're not going away: ABBA (can't even do the back to front B) Head Over Heels Just a small request on top of that - I missed Monday's show and can't listen to it again without being extremely rude to my hosts. How's about displaying the playlist?
Couples Beyonce - Single ladies Jay-Z - Hard Knock life
Patsy Kensit / Eighth Wonder - I'm not scared
And her hubbies in no particluar order...
Simple Minds (Jim Kerr) - Don't you forget about me Big Audio Dynamite (Dan Donovan) - E=MC2 Haysi Fantayzee (Jeremy Healy) - John Wayne is big leggy Oasis (Liam Gallagher) - She's electric
And his wife... All Saints (Nicole Appleton)- Never Ever
#20 Odds on working Class Hero getting played? Probably about the same as Elvis coming back to earth in a flying saucer and crash landing on the head of the Loch ness monster!
#16 It's an affectionate term. I do like him. Honest.
Mick Jones was once linked to Slits guitarist Viv Albertine... Typical Girls! Siouxsie & Budgie / The Creatures, Budgie married Sioux circa 1991 and then divorced in 2007...."Mad Eyed Screamer"
Gwen Stefani - What You Waiting For? married to Gavin Rossdale (Bush) - don't like them, so not suggesting anything by them. Hoping someone who does may fill the void. If there's a void to be filled. Captain & Tenille - (Daryl Dragon and Cathryn Tennille) Do That to Me One More Time or if that's a bit racy for pre-watershed, Love Will Keep Us Together. Whatever.
#43 NO no no no no. Well maybe yes, but it's not the choon that's my gripe or the anniversary it's the dictatorial tone. I mean, Fred doesn't come on and say Zero the hero and the Witch's Spell - an absolute must for tonight. No, he politely requests it and see where that's got him.
Anyway, I'm enjoying a nice mug of Lapsong Souchong, cue for an anagram if ever there was one.
Of course, the real henri hannah wouldn't be difficult to impersonate because, whilst having huge affection for John & Yoko as people, the McCartney request would be typical.
Truth is Macca and his Mrs were always musically more profound because they were able to sing together harmonically.
Linda took a fair slating for her musicanship but she could sing decent backing vocals.
So, just for a change, Bryan, - and since I'm doubtless going to have to endure Dignity Once More - could we hear something interesting and good.
There is only one album credited to "Paul & Linda McCartney", "Ram" which, whilst issued at the height of bad feeling about the Beatles break up, is nonetheless one of Mccartney's finest albums.
It might have been called 'Experiments with our voices' because the singing styles are like nothing else in the Mccartney repetoire and, Linda is a big part of it - so it's not tokenism ( well, it is, but it works).
From the album Ram - the fabulous Monkberry Moon Delight - Paul & Linda McCartney
well, the track they did play sounded quite okay, I thought, but since we're straying off message for Ricki & Lorraine maybe we'll get to hear Monkberry Moon Delight.
I think so, if you listen carefully, you might hear them - you you need a really really good and powerful stereo - I'm not sure radio is good enough, which is a pity cause they are something else.
