Show your appreciation...

Bryan Burnett | 19:32 UK time, Monday, 25 July 2011

Tuesday's theme is a chance to come up with some really interesting tunes to play. It's all about the underappreciated and uncredited musicians who appear on songs unnoticed.

A few examples are Marvin Gaye playing drums on this Please Mr Postman or maybe Chris Rea contributing a guitar solo on Deacon Blue's debut album.

However please also feel free to suggest those musicians who are not so well known but who have made a sizeable contribution to well known pop singles.

The majority of us will have a record with BJ Cole playing steel pedal guitar. The amount of artists he has worked with is incredible:

    Elton John - Tiny Dancer

    David Gray - Caroline

  • Comment number 9.

Session musicians and singers are probably the least credited folk in music. It would be lazy to go for that poor lassie who was deemed too whatever for any credits on Black Box's Ride on Time, or that guy who played sax on Careless Whisper. Or whoever actually sang any of the Milli Vanilli songs, but were "clearly" not photogenic enough to carry it on their own merits...... Not even going there with Trent Reznor's "Hurt" - most folk won't have heard the original and probably wouldn't want to. Johnny Cash's superb rendition at least means his song writing is appreciated. Not envisaging massive support for any of those, so suggesting a Motown undervalued instead:
James Jamerson bassist, featured on Stevie Wonder's For Once In My Life and plenty of other massive Motown hits.

  • Comment number 10.

Wayne Perkins of the Muscle Shoals thingy...

  • Comment number 33.

Carol Kenyon is a brilliant backing vocalist. Everyone from Van, Pet Shop Boys, Big Dish, Tears For Fears, Julian Cope, Fish, Pink Floyd etc.

But she stole the limelight on this one:

    Heaven 17 - Temptation

  • Comment number 34.

My favourite bass player...Norman Watt-Roy from The Blockheads, I think is quite generally overlooked but shouldn't be under-rated, just think of the 'Rhythm Stick' bass line...he quips that he thought he was being paid by the note for that one.

'So It Goes' - Nick Lowe (he played on all of 'Jesus Of Cool')
'Let It Be' - Nick Cave (from 'I Am Sam' soundtrack)
'You'll Always Find Me In The Kitchen At Parties' - Jonie Lewie
'Two Tribes' - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
'The Magnificent Seven' - The Clash

  • Comment number 35.

    Standing in the shadows.....
Donna Summer "Protection", a storming cover of a Springsteen song with a brilliant guitar solo by Bruce.
Sheila B .Devotion "Spacer".Sheila sounds like a bad Eurovision turn but check out the gargantuan groove created by Chic as the sessionmen
Joni Mitchell "Raised on Robbery"."Joni rocks"shock with no less than the Band as backup band.
Paul Simon "Gone at Last" Great song with stratospheric backup from the late great Phoebe Snow.
Paul Simon "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover"with dazzling drumming from the incredible Steve Gadd.
Rolling Stones "Salt of the Earth" Nicky Hopkins lets rip on this one.

David Williams is one of the unsung guitar heroes of recent years. It seems you have to be a fast playing metal head to be considered a guitar here. David Williams died a couple years ago of a heart attack and according to th epress he didn't get quick enough treatment because he had no medical insurance. Considering he played all the guitar licks on Thriller and a few other Michael Jackson albums as well as Maddona, Bryan Ferry and many more.

This is a tribute to him here: You can hear him jammimg 'Bille Jean' at a Roxy soundcheck at 2:01
