there is one irishman who tells brilliant stories.
he is controversial and has attracted the attention of the special branch over many years for the content of his songs.
i like the way he puts his head above the parapet with 'dying soldier' and love the stories and the people behind tales like 'lisdoonvarna' and 'the ballad of ruby walsh', then standing foursquare with the trodden upon in 'the disappeared' a heartbreaking story if ever there was one.one of his best ever was when he wasn't even singing it, 'the little musgrave' by planxty.
but
the one i would really like to hear on the radio is the best ever song written about glasgow.
and what a story.
the song touches so many points of the great city....east end.....gallowgate.....broomielaw....iconic pubs especially 'the scotia bar' where many a hatch was plotted..........but the song transforms completely when in whispered awe 'jinky johnstone' makes an entrance just as if we're watching the wee man running out onto the pitch alongside 'yogi'....'caesar' and 'big tam'.......with memories of jinky entrancing a full house at......well. choose the stadium.
and for those of a certain generation the name of the ballroom sends a shiver down the spine.

a couple o' years ago i was innocently drivin' doon the boulevard at the drum and there sittin by the side of the road advertisin' the local carvery (eatin' house!!) was an inflateable santa....the ones similar to the 'yogi bears' you used to see waving about at packed football stadiums....see #14..........the fact that it was early september only added to the festive mood in the car and reminded me that i really should think about ordering ma' goose

Blue Oyster Cult "(Then Came) The Last Days of May" is both short and complete, and I'll persist in asking for it :-)
Rainbow "Stargazer" is an epic, monstrous vocal, drums and guitar-fest;
and most of Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" consists of tales strung together: "5 Years" and the title track being cases in point.

beth neilsen chapman can only be applauded for putting a song like this right out there in the public domain.

Had a quick look at The Handsome Family on YT and it made me wonder if there might be a theme here - inappropriate band names. Names that dont really fit the band - the Pixies would be another one. Or ones that do, like...can only think of one off the top of my head but I think I would get moderated!

Or maybe awful band names - the Beatles for example.

Like The Killers (one would hope) or The Beach Boys which should have been The Beach Boy because only Dennis Wilson surfed.

Every time this theme comes up I think of "Ode to Billy Joe"which had such a strong narrative structure that it was made into a very good little film later.That's already been chosen,as has "Harper Valley PTA".Is there such a genre as Soul Country?I was thinking of the great "Hickory Holler's Tramp" a country song to be sure but O.C.Smith's soulful delivery was a long way from Merle Haggard.Not to mention Clarence Carter's "Patches" which tread similar social comment territory although a bit too maudlin for me!Still would be cool to hear O.C,Cheers,Willie Bartke

Eric – My use of capitals is to make it easier to read for Bryan. I have often noticed that he can’t tell the difference between the name of a SONG/ALBUM/BAND and ordinary text so this makes it easier for him. Plus I can’t be arsed learning html.

If your looking for great story telling then look no further than folk ballads.Unfortunately the best of them like "Tam Linn"by Fairport Convention or the grisly"Cruel Sister"by Pentangle are well over three minutes.Still would be great to hear, say ,the spellbinding and not overly long "Once I Had a Sweetheart" by Pentangle or the haunting(literally!)"She Moves Through the Fair"with exquisite delicate harp playing by Breton harpist Alain Stivell,the best version ever .Cheers,Willie Bartke

I've said it before - it never ceases to amaze me how much airtime is given to JC on GIO. For a man of his time and genre you might expect a couple of plays a year (maybe) on a show like this, but not half a dozen a month (sometimes more).
It could have something to do with the West of Scotland's fondness of C&W but then we rarely have Sidney Devine on the show.
