Train In The Distance - Paul Simon - a masterclass in minimalist story telling, leaving out just enough space for us to fill in the detail.
Train- Goldfrapp
Take the A Train - Duke Ellington
Long Train Runnin - Dooblie Brothers
Just Like This Train - Joni Mitchell
La Mer - Martin Taylor ( from the album Last Train To Hautville)
Born Slippy - Underworld form the album Trainspotting
Night Train - Rikki Lee Jones
And... a special plea... Jack Bruce's album 'Sogs For A Tailor' contains the opening number Never Tell Your Mother She's Out Of Tune which is based on a train moving along at speed, as you will instantly recognise when you play it... it plays out with the repeated lyric...' Good Time Train' which would have worked as an alternative title. Requested dozens of times but to no avail - the perfect theme tonight. It would be especially pleasing to hear this.

These two are nostalgia (train)trips. We used to sing them with the boys at bedtime when they were wee. Not along to these versions - manny had (and still has) various song books of songs little kiddies apparently would enjoy. Which they did. I have to say, I preferred our little amateur domestic efforts to either of these, but as we didn't think to record them (how short sighted of us), these aren't half bad.
Otherwise:
Simon and Garfunkel Homeward Bound
Flash and the Pan Waiting for a Train
The O'Jays Love Train
The Doobie Brothers Long Train Running
Better throw in another one for good (?) measure:

Pushing my luck with this one - this is the sort of song that would probably have all those ABBA nay-sayers saying "I told you so". Nice lyrics, horrendously naff musical arrangement. Just a novelty request to remind us of some of their weaker efforts.

Thanks for reminding me, Gaie - though The Sleeper isn't my favourite Leisure Society track.
For years I was aerophobic - I'm the only person I know to have driven from Glasgow to a conference at Gatwick Airport, though as a frequent traveller to London, the GNER service from Glasgow to London down the East Coast was my favourite because it had a really good dining car. My colleague and myself would sit ourselves in there, order up bottles of wine and a meal and spin the journey out, getting slowly plastered watching the countryside whizz past. Great fun.
So I have decided that the line " Here in my car, I feel safest of all" qualifies for tonight.
Cars - The Leisure Society
This passes the Captn Ramius test of cover versions that bring something new to your underdsanding of the music and is utterly brilliant.
I should add I'm no longer aerophobic - and I know how to cure Bryan's fear of bridges!

Quite right Paulo. How could I omit Smiffy's portrayal of 'Linda' in the 'Looking for Linda' video - a song about a train journey. It's not my favourite of theirs and I thought Smiffy was mis-cast - far to glamorous and good looking for the role of the downtrodden, escaping Linda, but hey - immortal now.
