Juke Box Jury...

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Tuesday, 22 November 2011

Tomorrow's theme celebrates the fact that this week in 1899 the world's first jukebox was installed. So get in touch and let me know what song do you always look for and play in the pub? (Actually do they still have jukeboxes in pubs?)

Do you have a song that brings back memories of days when there were jukeboxes in every pub and caf茅?

Maybe I should ask what would be your three plays if I gave you 50p? Being someone who liked to get value for money I always went for Bat Out of Hell, Blue Monday and Freebird!
Have your coins at the ready for ten past six tomorrow...

A certain College in Dundee, late 1970s. There were those into punk and those not. Jukeboxes had a primitive means of counting how many times a record was played and our College didn't exactly play too many punk records.

We got to know the guy who changed the records on the jukebox and made sure that he always kept Pretty Vacant by the Sex Pistols on the 'playlist'.

Actually, at the time, we only liked the first 30 seconds of the track. Funny how these things grow on you..........

    stand aside please.
    juke box?
well you would need some songs that when you walked into the low lit diner you could be sure that it was actually a jukebox that was playing and not some pumped up sound system beltin' oot gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa puttin' ivverybody intae shock wi' the thud thud.
a list of macaffatarian proportions beckons.
    hold the presses.
    watch this space.
    songs to take you elsewhere.
    a place you'll like.

One afternoon 'team-bonding' session from work, we found that the local pub had a function room downstairs (decor untouched since about 1975), with a beer garden and a pool table. We spent a fabulous afternoon and evening there, much better than trudging off into town...even had ourselves a wee dance when we discovered the jukebox...5 songs for a pound, 3 for 50p!!!

    David Bowie - 'Suffragette City'
Mott the Hoople - 'All The Way From Memphis'
    Mud - 'Dyna-Mite'

The The used the "The". The "The" the The used is the "The" Them did not.

That was also the afternoon when we discovered that Brian from work had been on stage at Wembley Stadium with Bryan Adams...only, he'd been hauled up there not knowing any of the words to any of the songs (he'd only gone because a friend had a spare ticket). Once the obligitary air-guitar to the intro had been done...which he'd carried off with some flair (Brian gave us a demonstration...Pete Townsend would've been jealous)...Bryan A turned to Brian G and said 'take it away Brian' at which Brian G, looked at the Wembley crowd, got himself into his best rock-star pose and belted out..."la la la la la la...la la la la la la la" before being chucked off the stage...

LouiseJuliefromEdinburgh'spal has a jukebox in her hall...I used to work in a pub with Louise and we always sang along to these when they were played on the jukebox:

'Tell Laura I Love Her' - Ricky Valance
'Have I The Right' - The Honeycombs

Why did they wait nine years after its invention before installing?

#11 I wonder how a Yorkshireman would cope with such information

Early models suffered from a persistent glitch which rendered them unable to play Frank Zappa records.

I recall a jukebox in 'The Freetrade' bar on the quayside of the Tyne during my 'courting' days. It was memorable as it contained no modern pop, just classic soul and blues tracks.

Every time I hear this track it takes me back to those wonderful nights in Newcastle, drinking 'Broon' Ale, munching 'stotties' and feeding 50ps into the jukebox.... discovered after a year that the jukebox was infact free!

    Was it just me......?

Two in the afternoon, yoonie finished for the day, into pub with a couple of mates, pretty quiet with only a half dozen worthies sitting at bar. 鈥淟ets liven things up a bit鈥 Go over to jukebox, 50p in, make a selection. Go back to bar and send mates over to put the other two in. They are standing over jukebox as Renee and Renato blasts out.
