The long and winding songs...

Bryan Burnett | 19:55 UK time, Tuesday, 1 November 2011

During all the huffing and puffing on tonight's show, Kirsten and I decided to impose a lower limit for tomorrow night's 'long songs' theme. Therefore we will sadly be unable to accept anything that's under five minutes.

As far as the upper limit goes then the sky is truly the limit although I must say I'd struggle with anything over ten. Then again I do have a very low boredom threshold.

The downside is that we will not get through half the tunes we normally play but the upside is that I wont have to wait till the 7 o' clock news for a cup of tea.

Get in touch with your suggestions and for once don't bother to keep it brief.

In Your Mind - Bryan Ferry - 5:19 – Stroll through the summer of your years
High Hopes – Pink Floyd – 7:45 - From the buzzing bees to Gilmour’s soaring guitar, an aural treat
Mother of Pearl – Roxy Music - 6:45 – A party and its aftermath. A band at their peak.

From Wilco's new album...'One Sunday Morning'...clocks in at around 12 mins I think. It's fab...Mr Anderson has a copy, I would think Ricky does too...and likely Henri H!

'Moon in June' by Soft Machine would take up about a quarter of the show...you could eat your soup in the canteen and still have time for coffee, cake and a packet of crisps back at your microphone.

'There's always 'When An Old Cricketer...'. ;o)

    Pink Martini:

    'No Hay Problema' 6:14
    'Brazil' 5:24
    'U Plavu Zoru' 6:01
    'Tea For Two' 5:02

    Sheep - Pink Floyd

Actually, any Pink Floyd suggested on this blog has my backing.

    You may also consider:

    Jesus of Suburbia - Greenday
I saw America - Stone the Crows
    Joey - Bob Dylan
    Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen
    Freebird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Won't get fooled again - The Who
I want you (She's so heavy) - The Beatles (which is the Fab Four's longest track apart from that rubbish revolution 9 stuff, beating Hey Jude by nearly 40 seconds)

#5 Scotch - what's the correct lingo? Oh, aye, that would be "massive seconds" for your Elton suggestions. Starting with a funeral isn't obviously obvious when finishing with curtains - ah dah kain, could we no' have
Muse New Born first, then finish with the inevitable? Just to celebrate the birth of the 7 billionth co-inhabitant of the planet? It's over in 5 minutes......

Silver Rider - Robert Plant (6.05)

    Spoonful - Cream (6.29)

Before the Deluge- Jackson Browne (6.28 or 7.58, depending on the recording, or on whether your gramophone needs wound up )

My Mule - Woodenbox and a Fistful of Fivers (6.45)

    ROXY MUSIC

    'The Bogus Man'
'For Your Pleasure' complete with Dame Judi dench reciting poetry at the end
    'A Song For Europe'
    'Manifesto'

Stevie Wonder - 'Do I Do' just makes it at 5:01

Broooce - 'Rosalita' would take me back to Scout Discos (the DJ at the time had really good eclectic taste)

The American funk rock band Mother's Finest isn't very well known over here but their live version of Jefferson Airplane's 'Somebody To Love' is excellent (5:57). They also have a song called 'Show Time' which you probably haven't a hope in hell of finding but if you're up to the challenge it's also excellent...live version...pretty sure it's over 5 mins long.

The posted running time assumes the playing of this recording.

    Bryan,

You seem to have stopped reading my requests. This time it's a plea, not a request.

I could ask you to play some man, wales's answer to The Grateful dead. But I won't because I know you won't..

Instead, could you please play "The Garden" by Jackie Leven, from the album "The mystery of death is greater than the mystery of love" At 5.55, perfect for tonights show. Jackie is currently in hospital after major surgery, and has fought against several infections and still lucky to be with us. It would be lovely to hear one of his songs on the show.

    Fingers crossed..

Tonights food.. Fish supper (homemade), as the fish van calls tonight, after a Gaelic class this afternoon. Tapadh leibh.

'Echoes' on my David Gilmour's 'Live in Gdansk' album is over 25 minutes long

Just a thought Bryan, why don't you play Pink Floyd's Shine on you crazy Diamond (Parts I - XII) in the first quarter, Echoes in the second, Kraftwerk's Autobhan in the third and finish off with Jesus of Suburbia by Green Day and Brooooooce's Jungleland?

You won't even have to do the news, Macauley trailer, or the outdoor conditions forecast (although I'll miss that lassie pronouncing 'Bredalbane' and 'Lochnagar') and the montage would be pointless.

As I say, just a thought

there was 1 cd in byres road a few months ago @ £15 so i'll wait till it comes down to a fiver...somebody bought it though.
i remember bumping into them before they were big....in tain....they were playing a church hall......pre gig they were in a local hostelry......talking gaelic to each other...i didn't part with the £3 to see them that night either.....although i did part with the £4 to see donnie munro at a hogmonay bash in george square.....snow patrol were also playing.....thats what i call value.
ah, those were the days....when you could drive and park near george square for free have a double espresso in a smart coffee house and a coke, 2 tickets for the open air gig and have change outta tenner. (it was only about 5 years ago!!)
nae wunner they stopped them....mustave been a 'loss leader' for the cooncil.

so lets hear this nice song dedicated to his mother from his first solo album which was excellent....

    'morning light'......................donnie munro

First of all I think Bryan deserves to be given an additional hour to get through more of what are some brilliant suggestions, he has accommodated other shows in the past so I think the favour should be returned given tonights theme.

Definiteley worthy of consideration should a similar theme come up in the future.

    And so to business

    #8 BIG seconds for Paulo's
Blinded By The Light / Manfred Manns Earthband
    Full version is superb.

Don't give Up / Pete Gabriel & Kate

I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man / Prince - seldom played in it's entirety but brilliant.

    IGY / Donald Fagen
    or
    Nightfly / Donald Fagen
Super cool laid back, both from the excellent post Steely Dan Nightfly Album, wonder if BB feels any affinity with the title track?

    Well, not really.

I've got zillions of tracks over five minutes: heer's two or three that would make the drive home and evening chomping all the cheerier:

Year Of The Cat - Al Stewart six minutes of sublime Alan Parsons production.

Keep On Truckin - Eddie Kendricks 8 magnificent minutes -stunning arrangement by Motown Producer, Frank Wilson.

Benedictus -Karl Jenkins 7 minutes of heaven, or close to it.

  • Comment number 79.

It was a tad disappointing to hear Freebird and American Pie, in full, once more.

Mind you,in a show which was going to comprise of about ten tracks, giving 20% to repeats is somehow fitting - it kinda sums things up - at least 20% of the output is already repeats along with 20% budget cuts to follow through, we'll be hearing Freebird and American Pie (neither of which I'm fond of, American Pie was turgid in 1972 and it hasn't improved with age) fairly often. It does make you wonder... are there people out there who actually listen to this stuff at home?

A lot of the tracks played tonight were simply self indulgent variants of better appreciated 3:00 pop songs.

Interesting theme 'Songs about the bath'... we'll be on Spotify for that one.
