I agree that I think he would have hated the label 'Grandaddy of Pop'. I will remember him for the fantastic entertainment that he gave us.

There will be much said about him, good and bad, either way, the man was a genius.

Had a great night with my mate over from the US, reminisced loads, laughed more. Didn't realise just how much I've missed him actually.
Busy day ahead today, work this morning then straight to a wedding if I get away in time!
My tv thingy will be a news item, might even go national...

...however methinks the news of MJ's death overnight will take all the coverage today.

Not sure what to post really. V sad for the family.
I still play the Off The Wall cd regularly, loved Thriller, then it all went a bit weird to say the least.
Heard the news as I was coming back for the pub last night and was shocked.
All a bit surreal, fully agree with Bingo's post. Not enjoying the news coverage which appears to be a 2 minute loop of repeated stuff and distraught 'fans'.

Fully agree Chris that it was probably all a show, and with Clo' with her post too.

Nice to hear about that side of him Chris, and I agree that he was a massive talent who made a lot of difference (for the good) to a lot of peoples lives.
I used to have a t-shirt as a teenager with a picture of him lighting up the floor tiles in the Billy Jean (I think) video, which was my pride and joy.
Can't agree about the media, as they will go on exploring every avenue of his life way after our appetite has been sated.

My thoughts are with his children really and the hope that they find some sort of reality to get through this.

There can't be any doubt though that his most powerful legacy will be his music, which we will be listening to long after I'm gone.....as it should be!

Now I've stopped wandering round with a bemused look on my face.......very odd feeling as I was never a big Jacko fan but do have memories of dancing round my room to the BAD album with my best friend (also no longer with us) so his songs always brought a smile to my face........

He was always there when I was growing up I remember going to the video shop to get the thriller video out when it was released to watch it. I was never a hardcore fan but I would always love to have a jig around on a piece of laminate somewhere to one or two of his very talented songs.

I was surprised when I found out and found myself to be a bit upset about it. Sometimes you dont realise what impact individuals have on your life until it is too late.

I hope his children will be okay and that his family will look after them and keep them away from the ensuing circus.

Very sad news... and great to hear your experiences of MJ CLP.

I was a young woman clubbing in the eighties and remember how each new MJ song/album/video etc would wow us. A vivid memory is standing in a club watching the first showing of the Thriller video... the place was packed out and everyone stood in amazement - mouths on floor - at the fantastic video.

Unfortunately it wasn't a joke, and the world has lost one of THE major influences on popular music and dance that it ever had. Whatever and whoever else may have happened in his life, there's no denying that.

...and my brother ADORED Farah Fawcett-Majors (as she was then), I can still remember the poster he had of her on his bedroom wall...

I've never seen the appeal of Michael Jackson, the man nor the music.

Having said that is always sad when someone is taken at such a young age, especially for the parents.

There will inevitably be a feeding frenzy in the media and there are two aspects.

Firstly, if nobody wanted to read about it then the press would not print it. We have the press that we deserve.

Secondly, as Jackson spent his career manipulating the media by creating a persona in order to promote his career, we can not now expect the media to just ignore that side of his life.

I think the coming days will be more reminiscent of Princess Diana than Elvis Presley. I also feel we will be suprised by the number of people who turn out to be 'fans' in order to get in the papers or on the TV.

Also with all the new ways of communicating blogs, twitter etc the whole thing will gather a huge momentum which is out of all proportion to what has actually happened.

Having written that, I have realised I am in fact contributing to the very thing that I am railing against. A true paradox, but I will post anyway because otherwise I will have wasted 10 minutes of my life writing this.

I was never a 'real' fan, but who on this earth can resist dancing to his music. All the hits from J5 onwards have been great and will always be played at birthdays, weddings and other get-togethers, AND people will always remember the words or the moonwalk, both young and all!

With regards to his life, you could say what kind of life did he have really with all the media frenzy that followed him night and day.

When you strip out all the rubbish about him the one thing you can take away from him was his ability to create good music

Afternoon All and a great post Chris, really interesting to read your side of the man.

I've never been a massive MJ fan, but live most people, you realise that he actually played a pretty big part in our growing up.

I remember listening to Ben as a kid, it used to make me cry. One Day in Your Life too.

I remember listening to Off The Wall with my first teenage love, most of that album reminds me of him!

The first time I saw Thriller was in a pub in Colchester with a huge video screen, I can't remember the name now but it was Stanway end of town. I was with college friends and we were all almost speechless at that video, it was a momentous time.

Shame that MJ's life then seemed to go off the rails, and like most of you have said, lets hope he's remembered more for his music and his influence on our current musicians than some of his more bizarre actions.

2nd half ARF dirty diana please

Turkish side of Cyprus - Kyrenia. A whole new experience for us. My parents have lived there for 5 years now and this, believe it or not will be our first visit!

Never thought it was a good idea to take GD out of school during term time, and the flights used to be OTT price wise in the school hols. It's now much easier to fly to say Larnaca and then drive North over the boarder and it's sooooo much cheaper!

The North has not yet been over commercialised (sp) yet and remains quite un-spoilt compared to alot of holiday destinations. Really looking forward to every aspect of our visit. The best bit of course will be seeing mum after her boob op a couple of months ago.

I Share Chistoph's views on The King of Pop's passing.

I was never a fan of his..but certainly of a lot of his music. Sadly all the hoopla that surrounded him (some self-inflicted, some imposed/created/encouraged by the media) was part and parcel of the Man.

But listening to t'other Chris on Radio 1 this morning (who, may I say, was very respectful of Jackson and made some pertinent points ), "I Want You Back" was played. What a fantastic song. Perfect for a summer's morning.

He was a great Entertainer and the World of Entertainment is certainly poorer without him.

But let's have Jacko and his Bros' music this afo - ABC, Blame It On The Boogie etc. Ace!

hey everyone. long time no nuthin'! got back from Egypt with a bacterial infection in my stomach. very very painful and not a good look. holiday great other than that though...

just wanted to share a couple of short memories...

one being the moonwalker film never out of a video player in my house.

another being me and my cousin getting told off for "wearing out the new lino" in my auntie's kitchen... of course practising our moonwalk... eventually forbidden after there was a near fatal accident involving furniture polish on said new lino and an unsuspecting aunty!

the next being showering with the bathroom door open when i finally moved into a house i shared with just one person...instead of 13... my reasons for the door open??... so i could hear my 3 favourite MJ songs EVER whilst i showered...something i still do to this day... listen to Man in The Mirror, The Way You Make Me Feel and Jam most times i shower. It's my timer!

I'm going to miss the hugely talented weird and mysterious superstar... Undisputed King of Pop!

Its hard to think that anyone between the ages of 30 and 45 wouldn't have danced or sung along to an MJ track at some point in their school years.

I saw him at Wembley and he did PYT and got the entire stadium going with

PYT's sing after me Say naaa, na, na, na say Naa,na,na, na. the hairs are up just thinking about it. What a performer !

The man had his demons and maybe some faults but haven't we all ? and I defy anyone to say that they'd enjoy having every detail of their life palyed out in public. In life you must be true to yourself and answer to your god and lets face it he's doing that now and I wish him safe passage.

Deeply sadden by the news of MJ demise. To me it was soo surreal, was absolutely shocked. Loved his music and music video, sad I didn't get to see him entertain live. Remember the first LP I owned was "Thriller" loved the whole album.

I want to write alot about Jacko today, but unfortunately i'm too busy at work and can't get the time away ter write on the blog fully - I will share some of my thoughts in more detail next week!!!!!

But quickly all i'll say now is Jacko I strongly believe was a very good person and sadly robbed of 'is childhood!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes when your born shy/ a sensitive person, it's very difficult to live in this often cold and cruel world!!!!!!!
On top of this Micheal Jackson, despite all 'is fame, fortune and who 'e was, 'e never found real love/ a special woman!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes fate/ life/ god/ whatever just doesn't let some people find what they really want!!!!!!!!!!
I can relate to 'im in this way...... the lonelyness!!!!!!!!!!

The two songs that always 'ave really 'it me and make me cry, that capture 'is pain are 'You Are Not Alone' and 'She's Out Of My Life!!!!!'
The latter when 'e recorded the single..... 'e was crying real tears whilst recording it.... the final version that was put onto the single/ album!!!!!!!!
Sometimes though when you feel real pain... it's what makes the performance more real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a more upbeat note..... Dirty Diana and Beat It are awesome tunes!!!!!!!
I love the wrock era 'e went through and doing work with Slash and Eddie Van 'alen who played wrock guitar on these tunes!!!!!!
But so many other mega tunes Strnger In Moscow touch a chord with me when I was on my own in Ukraine!!!!!!
Or Earth Song, They Don't care about Us, Black Or White, One Day In Your Life or Say, Say, Say...... just so, so many AWESOME tunes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange world we live in.... why someone so genius..... leads such a life of pain and confusion... VERY like Elvis!!!!!!!!

is the genius of MJ not Quincy Jones - the arranger producer of Thriller. Once saw a biopic on QJ where he explained the rationale behind most of the songs recorded on Thriller. MJ was a great mover, but relied on the supreme talents of Quincy to elevate the recordings.
I will miss Quincy more than MJ. Just listen to some of Quincy's own recordings - brilliant!!!

My husband and I met a few years ago - in our mid 40s. One of the conversations we had was 'Did you stay up to watch the Thriller' video the first time it was shown over here? I was so impressed that he actually held a party in anticipation! So please play Thriller for all of the people our age - MJ's music has been the backdrop to our lives since we were teenagers.

Odd, isn't it. I was just in the bank, and the two people in front of me were expressing their horror that Michael Jackson had died. They'd only just seen the news on the News24 playing to the queue.

The day Princess Diana died, we were out looking at kitchens all morning, and didn't find out until my (then) M.i.L said 'Sad innit...' and seeing our puzzled faces said 'about Diana'...still puzzled...'She died last night...don't tell me you didn't know???'

Just strange how some news passes people by...and yet it does...

Hello and good evening from upstate NY. Weather here is warm and stormy. Sad news indeed about MJ and of course FF.... what boy didn't have that picture of her on his wall. Anyway, please excuse my absence of the last few days. It's been a busy and emotionally hard week. To cut a long story short, a very good friend of mine's mother passed away and I have been helping the family. Everything pretty much went on hold..... but things have returned to normal, well as normal as possible anyway.... Out to mow the lawn, will be back on later..... TGIF everyone.....
