Morning all...

Chris Evans | 06:13 UK time, Friday, 26 June 2009

...Hope you are well...

I woke up like the rest of the world to the news that Jacko is no longer part of the plan. What a shocker.

Met him when I was working on The Brits one year - the Jarvis Cocker mooning year. Some of the artists have to work through the night because the rehearsals take so long and this year he was one of them.

It was 2am at Earls Court on the main stage - a closed set so very few people were allowed access. I was (just about) and what I saw was not some goofball with a hanky tied around his mouth, but a guy in jeans and a green t-shirt totally at ease with himself and all those around him, busy putting the kids through their paces of a complicated dance routine. He led by example and made them gasp open mouthed with the way he moved whenever he showed them how to do something, laughing and joking with them to get his point across like all the best teachers.

Was this the same guy who had arrived moments earlier amidst all the usual madness ? Not for a second. There was definitely a game being played here, and he was the one in the driving seat.

The next night when Bob Geldof came on to introduce him as he had requested, Bob had been told specifically he had to use the term King of Pop otherwise there would be a no show - back to the madness.

When Jacko came on to accept his "special award" he did his usual squeaky - I'm so shy I don't know what to do act - presumably because he thought this is what we wanted. If only he felt the world could have seen him as he was the evening before... a real cool dude getting on with his own genius..

When it comes to his private life what he did and didn't do that was wrong I have no idea - none of us ever will - but death is sad in the majority of cases and for someone who brought an extraordinary amount of joy to peoples' lives, I can't help feeling he deserves all the homages and tributes which no doubt will be played on radio and television stations across the world for the next week or so.

And at least with the great expectation of what was about to happen in East London in the next couple of months via his comeback/farewell shows (who knows what his plans were?), he didn't fade away without reminding us to have some regard for his art. The tickets for those shows were the fastest selling tickets in history, and I can't tell you the number of people that have since asked me if there is there any way I could get them in.

His untimely passing has left us all guessing once again as to what might have been - and once again only he will have known the truth - but by all accounts from what I have heard of how the rehearsals were going, he was coming back with the biggest of bangs.

Fifty is no age to leave this mortal coil nowadays but that means it is also no age to be remembered as having ever been old - just maybe older. At least he will now never have to endure the mantle of being The Granddaddy of Pop - something I am sure he would have hated.

See you Monday people.

Good Morning Christoff and yes indeedy to all of the above. A lovely tribute.

And proof, if proof were needed, given his wish to never grow old.

Be careful what you wish for.

Good Morning. I have just read about MJ on the news - very shocking and sad.

I agree that I think he would have hated the label 'Grandaddy of Pop'. I will remember him for the fantastic entertainment that he gave us.

There will be much said about him, good and bad, either way, the man was a genius.

    Beany x

  • Comment number 3.

And please, Good Fairy, can I make a wish.

That the newspapers can focus upon the huge legacy of pleasure this man brought to us, fan or otherwise. There's plenty to focus on.

Instead of the salacious rubbish-true or otherwise-that we don't need regurgitationg right into our faces over the next few weeks and months. It will serve no purpose. Unless anyone can enlighten me?

    Clodagh.xx

  • Comment number 4.

Perfectly put CLP and I truly hope you get your wish Clodagh.

Sadly my faith is not strong when it comes to the world media doing the right thing.

  • Comment number 5.

ARF has to begin with something by Michael Jackson - Beat it, Black or White or Blame it on the Boogie?

A sad loss of a disturbed but talented man.

  • Comment number 6.

    Morning

    Stunned. Silenced. Completely and utterly.

Like you say, 50 is no age. And yes Clodagh, let's hope the media salute his genius and not his controversies.

I was one of the lucky ones who had tickets for the 02 shows, sadly tho, it ain't gonna happen.

Jacko, Rest In Peace and let's hope you can teach Lennon, Elvis, Morrison, Hendrix et al the art of Moonwalking.

    Laters peeps.

    morning all, hope you're well?

Had a great night with my mate over from the US, reminisced loads, laughed more. Didn't realise just how much I've missed him actually.
Busy day ahead today, work this morning then straight to a wedding if I get away in time!
My tv thingy will be a news item, might even go national...

...however methinks the news of MJ's death overnight will take all the coverage today.

Not sure what to post really. V sad for the family.
I still play the Off The Wall cd regularly, loved Thriller, then it all went a bit weird to say the least.
Heard the news as I was coming back for the pub last night and was shocked.
All a bit surreal, fully agree with Bingo's post. Not enjoying the news coverage which appears to be a 2 minute loop of repeated stuff and distraught 'fans'.

Fully agree Chris that it was probably all a show, and with Clo' with her post too.

Short one from me - 50 is no age to die - My parents turn 50 this year - thats a wake up call to me as I took it for granted I would have them for many years and then MJ dies from a heart attack! Its a worry and no mistake

    Morning peeps
Agree with most of what's already been said.
Particularly enjoyed his Jackson 5 stuff - all so cheery but as with most people I own vinyl of Off The Wall anf Thriller.

All his so called friends will now creep out of the woodwork - saw Uri Geller pontificating on tv this morning!

Let's just remember the music - not the other stuff.

    Wise words CLP as always.

I agree and pray that all we hear about is the music

  • Comment number 12.

    Morning,

Nice to hear about that side of him Chris, and I agree that he was a massive talent who made a lot of difference (for the good) to a lot of peoples lives.
I used to have a t-shirt as a teenager with a picture of him lighting up the floor tiles in the Billy Jean (I think) video, which was my pride and joy.
Can't agree about the media, as they will go on exploring every avenue of his life way after our appetite has been sated.

My thoughts are with his children really and the hope that they find some sort of reality to get through this.

There can't be any doubt though that his most powerful legacy will be his music, which we will be listening to long after I'm gone.....as it should be!

CLP as always you seem to know just what to say.

Whatever happened in private, and let's be honest, we will never know.....there hasn't been anyone near as brilliantly talented as him.

    Morning All,

Now I've stopped wandering round with a bemused look on my face.......very odd feeling as I was never a big Jacko fan but do have memories of dancing round my room to the BAD album with my best friend (also no longer with us) so his songs always brought a smile to my face........

Well said Chris, you were obviously very lucky to see that side of him, if only he could have shared it with more people.

My thoughts are with his kids and I hope they can ignore the media hype and remember him as they knew him.......

Well done Christos, lovely and fitting tribute.

He was always there when I was growing up I remember going to the video shop to get the thriller video out when it was released to watch it. I was never a hardcore fan but I would always love to have a jig around on a piece of laminate somewhere to one or two of his very talented songs.

I was surprised when I found out and found myself to be a bit upset about it. Sometimes you dont realise what impact individuals have on your life until it is too late.

I hope his children will be okay and that his family will look after them and keep them away from the ensuing circus.

    RIP Jacko

    Hi all

Very sad news... and great to hear your experiences of MJ CLP.

I was a young woman clubbing in the eighties and remember how each new MJ song/album/video etc would wow us. A vivid memory is standing in a club watching the first showing of the Thriller video... the place was packed out and everyone stood in amazement - mouths on floor - at the fantastic video.

Bye Michael and thanks for the memories!

The Badger woke me up last night to tell me 'Michael Jackson's died'...I thought it was the beginning of a joke, and was about to sock him in the eye...

Unfortunately it wasn't a joke, and the world has lost one of THE major influences on popular music and dance that it ever had. Whatever and whoever else may have happened in his life, there's no denying that.

...and my brother ADORED Farah Fawcett-Majors (as she was then), I can still remember the poster he had of her on his bedroom wall...

    Chris

I've never seen the appeal of Michael Jackson, the man nor the music.

Having said that is always sad when someone is taken at such a young age, especially for the parents.

There will inevitably be a feeding frenzy in the media and there are two aspects.

Firstly, if nobody wanted to read about it then the press would not print it. We have the press that we deserve.

Secondly, as Jackson spent his career manipulating the media by creating a persona in order to promote his career, we can not now expect the media to just ignore that side of his life.

I think the coming days will be more reminiscent of Princess Diana than Elvis Presley. I also feel we will be suprised by the number of people who turn out to be 'fans' in order to get in the papers or on the TV.

Also with all the new ways of communicating blogs, twitter etc the whole thing will gather a huge momentum which is out of all proportion to what has actually happened.

Having written that, I have realised I am in fact contributing to the very thing that I am railing against. A true paradox, but I will post anyway because otherwise I will have wasted 10 minutes of my life writing this.

    Hey there Chris,

Thank you so much for your personal and touching memory of Michael Jackson.

Despite all the bad press he has received over the years we mustn't lose sight of the sheer genius of this man and hopefully this is what he will be remembered for. His music is timeless and will stir emotions in most. Like all the greats he sadly has died way too young and before his time!

If possible, I would like to make a request for you to play 'ben' this evening.

    Thanks again Chris.

    Afternoon All

My thoughts go out to his young kids, after all it is them that are left to cope in this media frenzy.

With regards to his life, you could say what kind of life did he have really with all the media frenzy that followed him night and day.

When you strip out all the rubbish about him the one thing you can take away from him was his ability to create good music

Who will the paps pick on now.

Could you play "They Don't Care About Us"

    Thanks Chris

    Hi Chris

Please could you play "I Want You Back". Why? It was the first track on the first Motown Greatest Hits I bought (no 4), and I played it to death. My 16 year old son loves it too. And me and my three children (22,19,16) were going to see him in February. There isn't another star that could unite us in music like Michael Jackson.

Afternoon All and a great post Chris, really interesting to read your side of the man.

I've never been a massive MJ fan, but live most people, you realise that he actually played a pretty big part in our growing up.

I remember listening to Ben as a kid, it used to make me cry. One Day in Your Life too.

I remember listening to Off The Wall with my first teenage love, most of that album reminds me of him!

The first time I saw Thriller was in a pub in Colchester with a huge video screen, I can't remember the name now but it was Stanway end of town. I was with college friends and we were all almost speechless at that video, it was a momentous time.

Shame that MJ's life then seemed to go off the rails, and like most of you have said, lets hope he's remembered more for his music and his influence on our current musicians than some of his more bizarre actions.

    RIP.

Turkish side of Cyprus - Kyrenia. A whole new experience for us. My parents have lived there for 5 years now and this, believe it or not will be our first visit!

Never thought it was a good idea to take GD out of school during term time, and the flights used to be OTT price wise in the school hols. It's now much easier to fly to say Larnaca and then drive North over the boarder and it's sooooo much cheaper!

The North has not yet been over commercialised (sp) yet and remains quite un-spoilt compared to alot of holiday destinations. Really looking forward to every aspect of our visit. The best bit of course will be seeing mum after her boob op a couple of months ago.

I was never a fan of his..but certainly of a lot of his music. Sadly all the hoopla that surrounded him (some self-inflicted, some imposed/created/encouraged by the media) was part and parcel of the Man.

But listening to t'other Chris on Radio 1 this morning (who, may I say, was very respectful of Jackson and made some pertinent points ), "I Want You Back" was played. What a fantastic song. Perfect for a summer's morning.

the next being showering with the bathroom door open when i finally moved into a house i shared with just one person...instead of 13... my reasons for the door open??... so i could hear my 3 favourite MJ songs EVER whilst i showered...something i still do to this day... listen to Man in The Mirror, The Way You Make Me Feel and Jam most times i shower. The man had his demons and maybe some faults but haven't we all ? and I defy anyone to say that they'd enjoy having every detail of their life palyed out in public. In life you must be true to yourself and answer to your god and lets face it he's doing that now and I wish him safe passage.

Please play PYT long and loud.

    Cheers

    Andy

Deeply sadden by the news of MJ demise. To me it was soo surreal, was absolutely shocked. Loved his music and music video, sad I didn't get to see him entertain live. Remember the first LP I owned was "Thriller" loved the whole album.
My thoughts are with his family. RIP in Michael.

Love from your fan in Hong Kong!

    Ello Again,

    Bingo Star ere..........

Very interesting and sad ter 'ear all the talk about Micheal jackson today!!!!!!!!!!

I want to write alot about Jacko today, but unfortunately i'm too busy at work and can't get the time away ter write on the blog fully - I will share some of my thoughts in more detail next week!!!!!

But quickly all i'll say now is Jacko I strongly believe was a very good person and sadly robbed of 'is childhood!!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes when your born shy/ a sensitive person, it's very difficult to live in this often cold and cruel world!!!!!!!
On top of this Micheal Jackson, despite all 'is fame, fortune and who 'e was, 'e never found real love/ a special woman!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes fate/ life/ god/ whatever just doesn't let some people find what they really want!!!!!!!!!!
I can relate to 'im in this way...... the lonelyness!!!!!!!!!!

The two songs that always 'ave really 'it me and make me cry, that capture 'is pain are 'You Are Not Alone' and 'She's Out Of My Life!!!!!'
The latter when 'e recorded the single..... 'e was crying real tears whilst recording it.... the final version that was put onto the single/ album!!!!!!!!
Sometimes though when you feel real pain... it's what makes the performance more real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a more upbeat note..... Dirty Diana and Beat It are awesome tunes!!!!!!!
I love the wrock era 'e went through and doing work with Slash and Eddie Van 'alen who played wrock guitar on these tunes!!!!!!
But so many other mega tunes Strnger In Moscow touch a chord with me when I was on my own in Ukraine!!!!!!
Or Earth Song, They Don't care about Us, Black Or White, One Day In Your Life or Say, Say, Say...... just so, so many AWESOME tunes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange world we live in.... why someone so genius..... leads such a life of pain and confusion... VERY like Elvis!!!!!!!!

But in a way..... was/ is Micheal Jackson bigger than Elvis?????????
    A mean Elivs wasn't a child star!!!!!
Like a wrote earlier.... when these outstanding people die..... they seem ter become bigger after their deaths!!!!!!!!

I find it so sad 'ow Jacko destroyed 'is goodlooks!!!!!!!!!!
Don't think I will ever understand what people, this life/ world iz all about!!!!!!!!!

All a can it's fascinating looking on and won't it be such a boring sad waste if there isn't an afterlife!!!!!!!!!

Let's 'ope Jacko iz up there with Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Lennon and all the other crazy entertainers that make this world such an interesting place ter live in!!!!!!!!!!!!

'ope all ave a nice weekend!!!!!!!

So glad that you'll be playing Michael Jackson this evening. I'd love to hear ABC; it reminds me of some great times at university.

    Hi all,

is the genius of MJ not Quincy Jones - the arranger producer of Thriller. Once saw a biopic on QJ where he explained the rationale behind most of the songs recorded on Thriller. MJ was a great mover, but relied on the supreme talents of Quincy to elevate the recordings.
I will miss Quincy more than MJ. Just listen to some of Quincy's own recordings - brilliant!!!

It's very sad news... the sightings will be next. Him and Elvis sat in a pub together with fake beards or who knows what...

Got to have ABC and Thriller in that second hour somewhere.

its a sad day for sure...

the 2 songs I think would be great to hear on the show:

    Earth Song
Black And White (the full one)

He will be sadly missed as will all the greats that have gone before him.

    PS Forgot ter say.......

Ave 'eard alot of talk terdee about Jacko not being shy...... I think az you find with most of these performers..... they are very naturally shy/ sensitive!!!!!!!!

But strangely when they are doing their stuff..... rehearsing/ performing..... they turn into different people.... it's the thing that drives them..... when performing they become/ feel a different person, go inter their element and enjoy every second and an extroverted side comes out!!!!!!!!
Thus leading to them giving a better perfomance!!!!!!!!

They say in every introverted person..... there's a big extroverted side waiting ter burst out!!!!!!!!!

True of so many top singers!!!!!!!!

I think this was definately the case with Jacko too!!!!!!!

    Chow again!!!!!!!!!

My husband and I met a few years ago - in our mid 40s. One of the conversations we had was 'Did you stay up to watch the Thriller' video the first time it was shown over here? I was so impressed that he actually held a party in anticipation! So please play Thriller for all of the people our age - MJ's music has been the backdrop to our lives since we were teenagers.

    Afternoon each

Think it's all been said. How sad for his children.

Nice, Chris, that you're dedicating the second half of the show to his music.

Odd, isn't it. I was just in the bank, and the two people in front of me were expressing their horror that Michael Jackson had died. They'd only just seen the news on the News24 playing to the queue.

The day Princess Diana died, we were out looking at kitchens all morning, and didn't find out until my (then) M.i.L said 'Sad innit...' and seeing our puzzled faces said 'about Diana'...still puzzled...'She died last night...don't tell me you didn't know???'

Just strange how some news passes people by...and yet it does...

    have a great weekend

Hello and good evening from upstate NY. Weather here is warm and stormy. Sad news indeed about MJ and of course FF.... what boy didn't have that picture of her on his wall. Anyway, please excuse my absence of the last few days. It's been a busy and emotionally hard week. To cut a long story short, a very good friend of mine's mother passed away and I have been helping the family. Everything pretty much went on hold..... but things have returned to normal, well as normal as possible anyway.... Out to mow the lawn, will be back on later..... TGIF everyone.....
