Ah, the Daily Telegraph. So much more than a paper, more a way of life. And how best to describe that way of life? Well, perhaps we can all guess, but its readers have inspired the paper to start a new club, called the Society of People Who Have Never, the rebels who 鈥渟ay no to Ikea, iPods and Pot Noodles鈥. You don鈥檛 say.
After the Telegraph鈥檚 normally acerbic theatre critic penned a review of the Sound of Music so glowing it put the 滨苍诲颈别鈥檚 Sky at Night poster to shame, one of its readers wrote in in clarion tones:
鈥淣ow is the time to bring to the attention of music lovers the Society of People Who Have Not Seen The Sound of Music and Have No Intention of Doing So. I believe that I am the only member of this society.鈥
This prompted such a flurry of like-minded souls to declare their dislike of assorted trappings of modern life that the paper has devoted page three to the launch of its refuseniks鈥 society, complete with a downloadable certificate.
But here鈥檚 the rub. It is a club for people who like to think they stand out from the herd. And a club indicates, well, a herd of like-minded individuals.
Meanwhile, if anyone is as anal as Paper Monitor and fancies a special discussion about the rights and wrongs of the Times's new font/fount, then as a one-off we can do this in the "comments" field of this entry. Paper Monitor him/herself is actually coming to rather appreciate the new style, especially in headline size. Not sure that it works in the front page masthead, though.

Am I really that unobservant that I didn't notice the difference until MM pointed it out to me? The place I noticed it for myself was on the Sudoku page in times2..... but the more I look now, I can see the difference and I think I like it!
Personally I think the serif is a bit too sharp on the masthead. It's like something a teenager has doodled in their roughbook.
Thought it was only me who was anal about these things... Think the mix of Times Modern (the new Neville Brody face) with the serif face (any idea what it is, anyone?) makes for a very modern feel. There's a picture gallery of the changes at this page on the Times website, which hasn't used the new font.
Does that mean we have to go and buy The Times? Surely the point of PM is not to have to buy actual papers ourselves.
For those of us who do not read the papers, but rely on Paper monitor to let us know what is going on. Can you please scan a copy of the new Fount, so that we can join in!

As a graphic designer who doesn't get out much, I thought I'd share my favourite (well, only) font joke with the world:
A font walks into a bar. Bartender says "Sorry, mate, don't serve your type."
Have a read of the comments to The Times' fount/font change article on their (comparatively inferior!) website here "none"
Word of warning MM/PM, don't go changing your founts or indeed you fonts anytime soon - your loyal readers might get militant! Putting a crossword over the fold.... tut tut...
It makes PM looked grayed and old--yet wishing to be young again.... was that mean? I'm sorry!

Did not realise just how old the old fount of Times New Roman was - who'd a thunk it - especially since PM noted it was updated four years ago.

I don't want to be picky BUT why do we continue to support Microsoft's incorrect usage of the word FONT?
A font (fount) is one size of one typeface, so 12 point Ariel is a font, Ariel is a typeface.
