Was Senna the greatest one-lap driver ever

  • Comment number 2.

That's a great vid Murray, I really enjoyed watching that.

And I totally agree with you when it comes to Spa being the greatest circuit, there's been some great races there.

I also think that Bernie doesn't seem to get the respect he deserves.

Will Bernie Ecclestone ever get his hair cut?

Was Ayrton Senna The Best Driver Of all Time Or Just His Generation?

Out of all the drivers past and present who is/was the best to have a drink with?

  • Comment number 6.

Do you expect the Spanish grand prix to follow the early races with Brawn, Red-Bull and Toyota leading the way or do you expect that someone else will come away with the plaudits?

    Cheers Murray

  • Comment number 7.

Hi Murray, what do you think of next years rule changes, i.e Budget cap, no refulling and wins for points?

  • Comment number 8.

Once again Murray top notch as always. Really getting to love all of these videos you do!

    Heres another question for you:
Its been 15 years since the death of Ayrton Senna at Imola to the date. The question really is; Will Formula 1 ever go back to Imola? They seem to have gone with Monza instead and dont have any current plans to return if Im correct.

I agree Spa must be one of the most loved tracks of all time. I really hope they dont make anymore unnecessary changes to it; theyll just end up ruining it.

    Dear Murray

Whats your views on there being no refuelling during the races next season and how do you think this will affect the racing?

    Hi Murray,
Where in the world would you like to see Formula One go to next?

    Hi Murray,

Classic answer to my question! thanks to you murray and all the team for answering my question.

Just to let you know, I do appreciate what Bernie has done, ofcourse I do, hes transformed the sport into a global entity, a massive brand if you like. But I do think he seems to be greedy, basically not having canada this year just because of money, he's even threatening the race of his own country not to happen, and thanks to him we have massive entry fees for new teams which simply put them off and the most wins system he is so keen on introducing, which I see as ridiculous. the key word there was 'becoming' seeing I personally think he looks like he might undo all his hard work. also, Red so isnt his colour when it comes to blazers! :D

Thanks, my question this week doesnt need to be asked, as preston4eve66 has asked it for me! Thanks to him! and you Murray and the ´óÏó´«Ã½!

    Dan

out of all the great cars in f1, what was the best in your opinion?

    thanks

  • Comment number 13.

Do you think there should be more global races, or should F1 stay more enclosed to europe?

  • Comment number 14.

In my opinion Senna was the best there was/is/and ever will be. Who in your opinion was the best F1 driver and if it is Senna, like me, then did anyone ever come close?

  • Comment number 15.

    Hi Murry,

I am dissapointed that there will be no re-fueling next season as I feel it really adds to the excitment of an F1 race, whats your views on the re-fueling ban?

  • Comment number 16.

    Hi murray,
do you think Senna was the fastest driver of all time?
And what do you think about the budget cap?

  • Comment number 17.

What effect do you think the re-fuelling ban will have on qualifying next year?

  • Comment number 18.

This year we have seen a reversal of the grid nearly, and it has show that many of the drivers we have ignored over the past few years have the talent and the potential to win and equal the skill level show by those at the front in recent years. Therefore how much do you think driver skill and talent will be involved in winning the championship rather than it all being down to just being in the best car? Thanks.

  • Comment number 19.

    Hi Murray,

What do you think is the best F1 Peformance from a driver has been?

    Thanks

  • Comment number 21.

Antree saw the two best drivers in the world perform, Fangio and Moss.
The circuit was good for the spectator, having permanent grandstands not scaffolding

  • Comment number 22.

I know my question has been asked before but I cannot see any of your answers on the blog !!

Re the change to the championship being decided on the most wins .....
.....if there are 17GPs and button wins first 3 and then massa, kimi, hamilton, vettel, trulli, kubica, & alonso win 2 each and Button is never in the points again then he still wins the championship ...your opinion please

  • Comment number 23.

Senna was one of a kind. There hasn't been anyone since this day 15 years ago to match him for a sheer natural talent for racing. Anyone who remembers the days of Prost v Senna knows hat will never be repeated. Today it's all about the car, not the driver. And that is what Senna was ......... A Pure racing DRIVER!!!

  • Comment number 24.

    Hi Murray,

DO you think F1 racing would benefit from a split race a la TOCA, with a sprint race and a slightly reduced long race. Possibly on different days?

    Regards
    Raphael

  • Comment number 25.

    Dear Murray,
Can I come round to your house one day for tea and Mr. Kiplings?

  • Comment number 26.

    Hi Murray

What would you say was the most memorable/exciting Formula 1 race you have commentated on ?

  • Comment number 27.

    Hi Murray,

Do you think that the new budget cap will be beneficial to F1 or will it detract from the spectacle?

  • Comment number 28.

    Hi Murray,
If you were a team boss, which road would you go down on the budget cap? Cap and freedom, or no cap and restrictions?
    Thanks, Ben Ashcroft

  • Comment number 29.

Which track, if any would you like to see back in f1?

What will it mean for the sport if ferrari withdraw following the £40 million budget cap set by Max Mosely?

    Thanks, Patrick

  • Comment number 31.

Do you think the new rules proposed for 2010 will take formula one downhill.

  • Comment number 32.

how about this order of driver

    JIM CLARK

    FANGIO

    SENNA

  • Comment number 33.

    Great answers again Murray!

I have two questions for you Murray. Who do you think is the best driver outside Formula 1? And which new teams will join Formula 1 in 2010?

  • Comment number 34.

Do you think that if Formula 1 has beed financially capped next year, then the the promoters etc. should follow suit and radically reduce the costs on entrance fees to F1 races by the same percentage?
    Cheers

  • Comment number 35.

Hi Murray, I am new to this blog, but have been following it for a while, with much enjoyment.
The ´óÏó´«Ã½, I hear are bringing the 2009 Sports Personality of the Year event to Sheffield (My home town). Will you be there?
I know that you have been reconised for your contribution to the motor industry in the past, but it would be great if the ´óÏó´«Ã½ renewed this tribute, as i am sure that thousands of people all over the world would agree that it is more than well deserved, especially as there is a great deal on British interest in F1 today.
I am suprised that the Queen herself has not honoured you in some way already.
I remember this logo on a banner at a F1 gran prix.
    "Murray Walker is the Talker
    Nigel Mansell is the Stalker"
    Both British legends

How good a driver are you? Do you ever wish you had been driving instead of commentating?

  • Comment number 37.

Do yout think Richard Branson is ripping off Brawn GP. Where do you think they are going to find the money to remain competitive? thankyou.

  • Comment number 38.

Hello Murray i have a couple of questions for you
1- Do you think Jenson Button and Brawn GP have a chance of winning their respective titles?
2- If Ferrari do leave Formula 1 what impact do you think that will have on the other teams

  • Comment number 39.

What is your top ten list of drivers this year?

  • Comment number 40.

In the week of the anniversary of the great Ayrton Senna's death, I am sure like me your thoughts have been about his life and times and the great racing driver that he was.

I don't want to ask you the predictable question of do you think he was the greatest F1 driver as so many others have done. Rather than that I would like to ask you what exactly was it about Senna that you think made him a truly exceptional Formula One racing driver? Why was he so much better than others of his time?

  • Comment number 41.

If Schumacher, Hamilton and Alonso start from the back of the grid why is it that you know for sure that both Schumacher and Hamilton will overtake the grid and end up in podium whereas Alonso will get stuck behind cars? What is the difference? thanks

  • Comment number 42.

What do you think about the possibility of a Aston Martin badged F1 team?

  • Comment number 43.

What's happened to BMW this year?

  • Comment number 44.

Could Max Mosleys comment about F1 and Ferrari, eventually cause a two tier F1 and force the manufacturers to form a separate grouping. F1 can also live without Max Mosley.

  • Comment number 45.

Thanks for answering my question Murray, as insightful as ever, hopefully if it does happen the race will be as good as the legendary '93 race was.
And hopefully they will sort out the access so it doesnt take 3 hours to get out of the car park again!

Like yourself I am a huge Silverstone fan though and would hate to see it leave, although the sight of an F1 car through Craner Curves should be a sight to behold!

  • Comment number 46.

    Hi Murray,

Why are KERS runners limited to only 6-7 seconds of additional performance advantage per lap? Doesn't this severely compromise KERS' potential to improve overall laptime?

  • Comment number 47.

What about building a brand new F1 circuit at the olimpic site
in London to be as good as China and the others in the middle east.

  • Comment number 48.

I'm sure you are aware that the new GP2 season starts in Spain this weekend. Who do you think will win this season?

    Thanks Murray

  • Comment number 49.

Great to see you again Murray. When are you coming back to do the commentary for F1?

  • Comment number 50.

Hi Murray, thanks for answering my question.
My next question would be, of all the circuits which are no longer on the F1 calendar, which ones would you most like to see return?
I would also love to know how good you think my fellow Welshman Tom Pryce was, could he ever have realistically become World Champ?

  • Comment number 51.

Murray, could the british grand prix be raced at brands hatch if Donington can't hold it?

  • Comment number 52.

Dear Murray, for years I have been to Grand Prix's, can you tell me why drivers rev their enginess to near limits in the pit lane as they approach their garage, always in practice sessions. is this some sort of pre programmed management system. the reason i noticed this was that david coulthard always seemed to do this as he passed the mclaren garage , when he was driving for red bull. is it necessary or a ploy to disrupt the mclaren routine. thanks Ian

  • Comment number 53.

    Murray,
Now the FIA have codified the 'Winner Takes All' WDC (Article 6.1 of the 2010 F1 Sporting Regs) without even highlighting it as a change (and apparently without many members of the media noticing) how do you think that is going to impact on the 2010 season? Especially since Massa's win at Interlagos last year would have won him the championship instead of Lewis (who finished with only 5 wins to Massa's 6). Does it make catching up easier (i.e. 3 wins is a smaller gap than 30 points) or does it make the dominance of a single driver more likely?

  • Comment number 54.

    Murray

After the controversial season-ending Grand Prix at Adelaide in 1994, Michael Schumacher became world champion, yet did not finish the race. Despite this, Schumacher was present in the press-conference due to him having become world champion.

That being the case, why was Lewis Hamilton not present in the press conference after becoming world champion last year?

  • Comment number 55.

Murray, in your book 'Formula One Heroes' Graham Hill is omitted. Any reason?

  • Comment number 56.

    Hi Murray,
I'm a F1 fan for many years can you tell me why does the FIA need to change the ruling every year? To make it more exciting.? F1 has always been exciting and without all the changes.

  • Comment number 57.

Please please ´óÏó´«Ã½ let Mr Walker do his stuff and take the microphone with Martin for the european races....please come back now...no adverts to get in the way...

  • Comment number 58.

Murray if someone asks you if you think there will be a Donington grand prix we want to hear your opinion, we don't want you to tell us all the things that we already know!

  • Comment number 59.

    Hi,

Do you think KERS can make a real difference in F1? Do you think it could eventually solve the infamous overtaking problems in the sport?

  • Comment number 60.

Can you explain how the KERS works please.
My understanding is that it's a kinetic energy recovery system, however this doesn't see to be the case with this years F1 cars which seems to be more like a restricted boost system.
    Thank you

  • Comment number 61.

what was the daffers't rule to be made in f1?
and is it still in play today?

  • Comment number 62.

We've seen a number of very wet Grands Prix over the past few seasons (2007: Europe, Japan. 2008: Monaco, Silverstone, Monza. 2009: Malaysia, China). Who do you think is currently best driver in wet conditions?

  • Comment number 63.

Murray, I need to settle a pub argument.
I think that with your vast experience of Formula One, that you must be the record holder for the highest number of Grand Prix actually attended.
Do you know if this is the case, and if not who holds that record.

  • Comment number 64.

If modern sports cars have low profile tyres, why do F1 cars have such small wheels, and large profile tyres - who has got it wrong?

  • Comment number 65.

I'm going to analyse Murray's answers
    1. You didn't really add that much to this debate as we won't know anything until next year's schedule comes out so you would have been better off answering a different question.
    2. Spot on with Spa although, if it were possible I would love to see Laguna Seca become an F1 track.
    3. I feel as if you are just pandering to McClaren and Hamilton here. A lot of drivers have come out and said that Lewis does not have a nice personality. While he has worked his way up through the various classes he has ALWAYS been backed by McClaren, providing him with the tools required to win races at the various levels. So in that respect he has been gifted a seat in a championship-winning car. Also I think a lot of people see that he has distanced himself from his roots so quickly. Moving away from England and his demenia on screen as well is one of impetulance.
    4. I don't think you really got down to this question- 'Ferrari will always come back because they have won more points than anyone else' is like saying Nottingham Forest will win the Champions League again because they have done it before. No Ferrari will win again becuase they have top drivers and will take the restrictions placed upon them and blow them out of water by spending more money than ever.
    5. Whilst all the good work Bernie has done for the sport, he seems less coherent each day. Watching some of his interviews it appears that there is some huge cover up, that he has died and been replaced by a malfunctioning android. He is becoming a liability and every person should be judged on what they do now, not on past glories (which you have justified your answer to 4. with). If you have a loyal dog that is old, slowly dying, you don't let it live on miserably, you shoot it. Thats what F1 should do- get rid of Bernie Ecclestone and give someone else a chance to improve the stagnating sport.

  • Comment number 66.

Murray, do you think Bernie Ecclestone's deliberately manipulated things so that there won't be a British Grand Prix from next year? According to Richard Williams in the Guardian today, it looks like he awarded it to Donington knowing they couldn't get things done in time, and refuses to give it back to Silverstone. So has he decided that he can get more money from other countries?

And if the British Grand Prix does go, should British race fans care?

  • Comment number 67.

In your questions week 4 you said Spa (Belgium) is the best circuit. But which track is the worst track?

    Thanks Murray

  • Comment number 68.

I agree about spa its the one i would go to if i had the chance. I have watched the documentrys about Jim Clarke and Graham Hill and wondered if you thought they could be as good as the drivers today.

  • Comment number 69.

Seeing that Brawn GP, Toyota and Williams found that they could use a Double-Decker Diffuser and that it generated controversy, could you tell us some of past controversies regarding confuse rules? Did they decide the fate of a entire championship?

  • Comment number 70.

with 3 more teams able to join next season and no refuelling and the budget cap, how probable is it that val doonican will enter f1 in 2010?

  • Comment number 71.

will we ever see the return of turbos?.

  • Comment number 72.

    Hi Murray,
I'm absolutely loving the snippets here.

Just a quick one for you - what do you think of the newly reformed IndyCar series and do you think any of their drivers have F1 potential?

    Cheers,
    Leigh

  • Comment number 73.

What about building a brand new F1 circuit at the Olympic site
in London to be as good as China and the others in the middle east.

Surely people like Sir Branson, could afford to give a little or even why NOT use ALL that unclaimed national Lottery money to build a new British Circut or we not proud enough to be British anymore, & want to KEEP a spot in the F1 Calendar.

  • Comment number 74.

Hello Murray, I am really enjoying your broadcasts, you really make a difference to a sport that I am very passionate about. Thank you.
I have been following F1 for around 20 years, and I realise that politics will always play a big part. But I am starting to get quite fustrated this year though, it seems there is a constant battle between the teams and the FIA. For example, Ferrari says they are not happy about the budget cap, FIA respond with "we dont need Ferrari".
Are the press giving the impression that the Max Mosley, Bernie Ecclestone and the teams are constantly bickering, or is this just the reality in 2009?
    Simon, Sussex

  • Comment number 75.

    hi murray.

how much to you think the current testing ban will impact upon the young up and coming drivers who would have benefited in the past from a few years of testing before being dropped in at the deep end?
do you think that we will see a distinct drop off in terms of driver ability in future seasons due to the lack of car time the drivers of the future will have had?

  • Comment number 76.

Come on the Murray, please put us all out of our misery are you going to commentate on the British GP? Its the last race at silverstone we need you to commentate just like the old days. I have even set up a facebook page devoted to this.
    thanks again Kris greaves

  • Comment number 77.

Murray, i agree with the answer to my question, spa is the best track, i have another question for you, will piquet jr last the season,or wil grosjean take his place?
    thanks

  • Comment number 78.

    Hi Murray

Why do races that last less than 75% only award half points?

    Matt

  • Comment number 79.

    Murray,
Do you think that McLaren are under more scrutiny than other teams?

  • Comment number 80.

    Hey Murry

What does the new £40M budget cap mean for the big teams in F1 and how will it affect them?

  • Comment number 81.

    Hello Murray,

    Bruno Senna's Future?

  • Comment number 82.

this years brawn car is essentially a well made and expensive car which honda made a lot of time and money making. But do you think this time next year we'll be seeing the same Brawn Supremacy?

  • Comment number 83.

    Are f1's rules policeable anymore?

I ask this after one of my fellow forum members recently spotted formula one cars testing at his local race track, with a blank livery on the cars and lorries. How can we know F1 teams aren't secretly breaking the testing ban?
Now cars aren't weighed during qualifying, how do we know they aren't running underweight, with weight added before scrutineering?
Will a budget cap really mean anything as the teams will just be very creative with their accounts?

Teams will always try to gain an advantage by bending the rules, whether legally (e.g. double diffusers, mass dampers) or illegally (e.g. liegate, BAR's fuel tank in 05)

  • Comment number 84.

    Circuit de Catalunya:
No one ever hits the apex of turn 5.
    The last chicane is horrible.
There have been problems with racism in the crowd since Lewis arrived. Overtaking opportunities are sparse.
Spain has a great circuit in Valencia.
With all this in mind my question is - 'Do you think Barcelona should continue to host a Grand Prix?'

  • Comment number 85.

Could Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway be considered as a Grand Prix Circuit? It would surely be more exciting than many of the circuits currently in use. It has hosted American Le Mans Series and MotoGP recently and has plenty of grandstands, runoff areas and modern infrastructure. The famous Corkscrew should provide an interesting challenge both for engineers and drivers.

  • Comment number 86.

Do you think that F1's success masks the other motorsports to the point that worthy drivers and teams do not get the exposure that they deserve? for example, Lots of people have heard of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, but few have heard of Andy Priaulx, who is after all a multiple world champion in touring cars. Do you think that F1 could help the other two FIA World championships with promotion, along with local motorsports?

Thanks, and see you at Goodwood!

  • Comment number 87.

    Hi Murray

Would you consider doing a commentary for the ´óÏó´«Ã½ maybe as a one off? For example at Silverstone or Monaco? It would be great to hear you behind the mic again!

  • Comment number 88.

Hi everyone. Murray, Paul and I filmed your questions yesterday and they will be on-line within the next day or so. Thanks for continuing to submit them, and just to say if you don't want to wait for a couple of weeks, then I am happy to talk to Murray with significant questions that he will answer via this forum.

A lifetime Fan, glad to see you again and on hearing your thoughs on these wonderful videos

With Ferrari's threats becoming more promiant
Can formula cope without Ferrari? or even can Ferrari cope without F1?

  • Comment number 90.

Is Eddie Jordan the silliest man in the paddock. Mind springs back to the F1 forun - Hi its Eddie here. As if we don't know who he is.

  • Comment number 91.

I know that you've always wanted to commentate on snooker, and I would love to see that become a reality, even if it were just for one match. It's a sport that really needs to be injected with some personality, because it doesn't naturally have it like Formula 1 does.
