Here's Emily with news of Thursday's Newsnight:
Things you never knew about a Miliband brother #4672...
Ed Miliband could do a Rubik's cube in one minute 20 seconds with just one hand when he was small. I can say that safe in the knowledge that voting for the Labour leadership is now closed and I will thus not be in danger of swaying votes amongst Rubik's devotees.
Tomorrow: David Miliband, Connect4 genius. We'll keep you posted.
Tonight, Michael Crick will be looking at the upbringing the Miliband brothers had - the legacy their father - radical Marxist Ralph Miliband - left upon them. And how their mother, Marion, another left-wing socialist, may actually have been the greater influence. To mangle a quote, to see one son enter mainstream politics could be considered a misfortune. To see two could seem like carelessness. .
Also this evening we'll be asking if councils could chose to outsource all their services - slashing their budgets and sacking thousands to meet the cuts required. Suffolk County Council will be the first to try it out, a council near you may quickly follow.
Mark Urban will have the latest from the UN as Obama and Ahmedinejad take to the stage.
And Tim Whewell will be looking at allegations of torture against a British citizen by the Bahraini government - his wife tells Newsnight that the Foreign Office could have done more to get him out.
Do join me at 10.30pm on 大象传媒 Two.
Emily

From earlier:
The Kremlin this week formally banned the sale of S-300 air defence missile systems to Iran, three months after new UN sanctions against the country.
So, as US President Barack Obama and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad both take to the podium today to address the UN General Assembly, we'll be taking a look at what appears to be mounting pressure on the Iranian government over its nuclear programme.
Also, with the new Labour leader set to be announced on Saturday, Newsnight Political editor Michael Crick will be looking at the influence Marxist academic Ralph Miliband had on his sons and leadership hopefuls, David and Ed.
Plus, we'll be asking whether moves by the Conservative-controlled Suffolk County Council to cut costs by 30% and outsource much of its services could become a new model of local government.
Further details later.

Do we all remember 'Arms to Iraq'? Do we all remember BP breaking Rhodesian oil sanctions? If Russian government is HALF as corrupt and devious as ours, Iran will not be short of missiles.
Remembering Labour Party donations - might the missiles be LOANED?

A worthy objective, but in reality will probably lead to more services being open for bidding by non-British employers, as with most other services(garbage collection, power and water supply). No doubt the EU will insist on this under some clause or another.
I forecast that by 2012 we will have become Virtual Reality Britain, with most companies and buildings owned by foreign interests, most work outsourced to (what used to be known as) the 3rd world, and any remaining members of our multi-ethnic labour force employed by non-Brits or living on a black economy.

Councils used to be mother hens to their local brood. That, of course, implied a caring ethos. Long gone.
In Newbury, we have a major cycling route that shares a subway with pedestrians of every age and ability (including blind). I made plain to the Council the situation, then mirrors appeared on the next subway along.

A bit like hiring a painter-decorator to come and refurbish your rooms and finding their service was a sheet of instructions through your letter box directing you to the nearest DIY store along with a bill for the full job.
This is the new anarchistic way, take the money and get the customer to do the work.

It's a simple story, but impossible to learn from.
Some don't see that they're doing anything wrong, as legally, they aren't. A lot of real life is like that these days. I'd like to say learn from this, but as I say, most of us can't, we just complain (but who's listening?). That's why this happens, and it will keep on happening. Cable (and Obama) can make grand gestures, but can any of them amount to anything in their closed system, as who are they instructing? Who are their enforcers? If you look into Hansard back in
2003 you'll see the Treasury Committee 'warning' the CEOs of our banks..........in 2005 Gordon Brown further deregulated.

Why did Ralph Miliband oppose 'Old Labour' SO vehemently? It鈥檚 because they were essentially Statist.

Note: If one is shocked by matters which are common knowledge within one's chosen community, it implies that one has a rather poor grasp of that community's social reality, and a rather grandiose conception of one's place in that community.
I do not mean to be unkind, but you really do need to be shocked

Try to see past the apparent religious symbolism. This is basically a conflict over group economics/politics which comes down to the old ideological clash between capitalism (Jews and Protestants) and socialism (Arabs and their allies). In order to keep that from getting hot, it's been sublimated. If one talks about religious issues one misses the point and just looks stupid. Muslims don't do usury. Get it?.

The next thing to do is to harness all inductive inference as unrestrained by evidence and statistics it's prone to take one very close to paranoia aka madness. Rely on deductive inference alone. Hence 'conjecture and refutation'. Otherwise one just describes one's beliefs states, and mad people do that all the time, i.e tell us what they believe.

On the other hand, could I possibly know more about UK prison conditions and sex offenders than you? You have to admit, it's possible isn't it? Maybe I picked you up on something you were not seeing?
The simple point is that he was being admonished by the judge. The judge was sending out a message about anti-social behaviour. In prisons, some sex offenders are segregated at their own request) for the own protection, and some are indeed attacked on normal location - but some are not (it's really quite a rare event in fact). The fear of being punished by one's peers is a powerful force in society, it's something which contributes to sustaining social order through social conditioning. Alas, some are only weakly receptive to this conditioning.
That is why so much is breaking down, and why there is far less respect than there used to be. Some without a good formal education think that their knowledge is just as good as those who have trained etc. Get my drift? How has this come about?
When it comes to repatriating non national offenders, a hierarchy of human rights has to be considered. A judgement is made. We get to read about ones which are controversial. That is the bias of the press which loves anomalies. To see how things really work one needs to read Home Office or Justice Department statistics. I also suggested you read some Rawls about 'the good'. I also made some suggestions to Barrie too, but he too appears to think he does not need any further education. I disagree. It's a logical point. It's also a good point.......

On the contrary, I'm trying to help you to stop making things more unpleasant for yourself at your own hand. I certainly wish you no harm, but I can identify attention-seeking behaviour when I see it. If you read my posts in their entirety you will soon see that I am making the case that the Liberal-Democracies (which in my analysis are largely Trotskyite/Anarchistic these days) have made the environment far more inhospitable for females than the former USSR and its Warsaw Pact allies (and even Islamic or Orthodox Jewish societies) ever did. This shows up in marital/relationship/family instability and in the low birth rate figures. If you look at the UN figures (for example) you will find that since the end of the USSR the birth-rates in the Eastern bloc have also fallen, just as they have here. At the same time, women in particular, who try to take on far too much, end up suffering more psychiatric problems (especially depression), especially as they age. People used to care more about each other, now they don't.
If you do watch Newsnight, do you not think that it might be a tad offensive when a guest was answering a question, if interviewers commented upon their dress/shirt, glasses etc instead of what they were saying? Or worse, if every time someone disagreed with them they accused their interviewee of being threatening, rude or persecuting?
An exercise: below is a link to the actual speech which the President of Iran gave to the UN and to which flicks2 referred to earlier. Note what Ahmadinejad actually said, and what some papers have reported him as saying through selective quotation. One of the things that I am trying to point out is that we all too often fail to report what happens, we often make stuff up, or attend to irrelevancies. When is this done on purpose, and when is it not? How does one decide? Learning not to misreport is actually very hard work and requires considerable discipline and so most people don't bother. Why? is it lack of ability?
Can you see the mess which occurs when people behave that way, and how it can get terribly out of hand? How it has got terribly out of hand?
That is what I mean by doing as you are told. Some of us have spent many years trying to learn to do as we are told. That's what science and professional training is all about. It never stops either. Why would you not want to do as instructed if the instructions themselves made sense? It would be like buying an oven and refusing to follow the instructions.

Yes, I agree, Crick avoided it/fudged it. But then, I guess, he's 'inside the tent', otherwise he wouldn't be in the senior position he occupies on the NN production team.

Told by you, table? Why? Du I know you, 'educator'? Perhaps I should call you an 'educating table'? Or a 'mr table phd'? Are you a dr of philosophy, table?"
It isn't the who that matters. It is the match between sentences and the world that matters. I've explained this to you before with the famous sentence "snow is white" if and only if snow is white. What you, I, and everyone else should be trying to do is focus upon what is said and what is the case, not upon who says it. Focusing upon who says what at the expense of what is said and what is the case in the world is as mistaken (irrelevant) as focusing upon and reporting the colour of Kirsty Wark's clothing when she is presenting Newsnight.
This is what the phrase 'play the ball, not the man' means.
Failure here is sometimes evidence of irrational analysis/thinking or wilful distraction, as it is focuses upon irrelevancies. In extreme form, it is sometimes a symptom of a psychiatric (or organic) disorder such as schizophrenia and dementia. In such instances, talking to the individual rarely if ever changes the behaviour, although some medications can reduce the severity of the behaviour.
