Prince William is to marry long-term girlfriend Kate Middleton next year after proposing on holiday in Kenya last month.
Tonight Stephen Smith will ask how significant an event the 2011 royal wedding is likely to be in the political and cultural life of Britain - are there really any parallels that can meaningfully be drawn with 1981? And how have we and the royal family changed since then?
Also, we consider how the Coalition may hope to harvest any goodwill for political ends, and what kind of ceremony will be appropriate in these austere times.
We will be joined live from New York by journalist Martin Bashir, and in the studio by historians David Starkey and Simon Schama.
Our Economics editor Paul Mason will bring us the latest from Brussels where Europe's finance ministers are holding talks this evening.
There is intense speculation that debt-stricken Ireland may be forced to use EU money to resolve its financial problems and avert the possibility of a Greek-style sovereign debt crisis.
And we have a film from Rupert Wingfield Hayes - who has come to end of his spell as the 大象传媒's correspondent in Moscow - about the 'new Russia' President Vladimir Putin claims to have created since coming to power ten years ago.
That and more at 10.30pm on 大象传媒 Two.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
From earlier:
The Irish government are continuing to resist intensifying international pressure to accept a bailout this morning, as fears that the country's financial problems are spreading through the eurozone sent shares falling across Europe.
Europe's finance ministers are gathering in Brussels today and our Economics editor Paul Mason will bring us the latest from there tonight.
Around a dozen men who accused British security forces of colluding in their torture overseas are to get millions of pounds in compensation from the British government.
Some of the men - all British citizens or residents - were detained at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba, and at least six of them alleged UK forces were complicit in their torture before they arrived at Guantanamo.
Tonight we'll discuss the significance of the government offering this compensation.
And we have a film from Rupert Wingfield Hayes - who has come to end of his spell as the 大象传媒's correspondent in Moscow - about the Russian President Vladimir Putin.
More details later.

Don't have nightmares.

I presume this is because the scale of the problem is now well beyond the ability of the Irish Government to fund another bank bailout...
If we were to see the UK going the same way following a property crash here, who the h*ll is going to bail out our banks, because we certainly cannot afford to?
The domino effect is clearly a real risk - Eire & Portugal go down - their debt is held by banks in the UK, Germany, France etc - these banks then go down too - Spain, Italy, etc then begin to teeter as well - the whole lot then demolish each other - game over.
Paul should as George Osborne whether he still thinks "Ireland stands as a shining example of the art of the possible in long-term economic policymaking."
The Irish success story is really one of the EU's power is so effective in helping the marginal economies of Europe to develop - and how free market liberalisation and tax cuts have then been allowed to destroy everything the Irish and the EU worked so hard to build up.

Good to hear that India thinks the Burmese elections were free and fair; certainly fairer than the grinding poverty to which some castes are condemned for life, purely due to an accident of birth.
I only went to India once and didn't stay long; everyone with money trying so desperately to be cool and Americanised whilst at the same time lecturing that the caste system and the appalling street poverty were not topics to be discussed. And so chippy about the British!

the current national oath institutionalises the norman monarchy model. nothing else. its even an offence under treason laws to point that out and suggest the norman monarchy model should be changed.
until the 'national' oath is changed to something more fitting the british people are not safe from that norman monarchy mindset. The government will continue to hand out public tax money for its crimes based on the existing monarchist oath.

Amuses me how the media goes into a flunky frenzy on these occasions, interviewing everyone from the man who laid the pavement slab that Kate Middleton stepped on in 1993, to a cockroach that used to live under the floorboards at her old school.
Why the media thinks the country rises into a state of euphoria at the mention of a royal betrothal is quite beyond my comprehension. But then I'm only a prol I suppose.
Was also wondering who would be paying for this illustrious, magnificent wedding. Such thought would be sedition, no doubt. That's ok. I'm sure my family will be happy to put up with cuts, higher VAT and a reduction in lifestyle during the days ahead, as long as the royals are happy.

Having previously watched Channel4 Dispatches report on the excesses of the EU Gravy Train (at UK taxpayers鈥 expense) we need to radicalise and change our predominant characteristics of tolerance, apathy, lethargy and complacency (TALC) - all aided by 大象传媒 dumbing down (pushing entertainment and celebrity instead of informing and enlightening)and the deliberate influx of grateful immigrants.
I鈥檓 happy that we had the example of students taking to the streets in protest, and do not wish to condone, condemn (or even condom) the occasional excesses of the young. And I still advocate the re-introduction of National Service to get a semblance of national pride, discipline and camaraderie back into our English society. This would also provide a low cost solution to the looming mass unemployment of those who cannot afford the huge increases in university fees, ease the withdrawal of benefits, and force those immigrants who have allegiances that conflict with our way of life to either serve the country or s.. off.
