Coming up on tonight's programme with Gavin Esler:

Forces loyal to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi have moved into eastern areas for the first time since towns there fell to protesters two weeks ago, with reports of heavy fighting between them and anti-Gaddafi rebels in the oil town of Brega, 100 miles south of the rebel stronghold of Benghazi.

Earlier Col Gaddafi said on TV he would "fight until the last man and woman" and warned that thousands of Libyans would die if Western forces intervened.

Tonight, as we will have the latest on the Gaddafi fight back from Lyse Doucet in Benghazi and Tim Whewell will be assessing whether there is any sign of a joined up global response to the crisis.

Michael Crick is Barnsley ahead of tomorrow's by-election finding out what matters most to voters there.

Also, more than 600 Oxbridge academics are demanding a halt to the £9,000 tuition fee rise, saying they have had no time to work out how it will be implemented.

Universities Minister David Willetts and one of those critics will go head to head on the programme tonight.

Join Gavin for all of that at 10.30pm on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Two.

    'INTERDISCIPLINARY BEACON AREAS'

I note that Exeter advertises Interdisciplinary Beacon Areas. Sounds a bit like a bonfire of the sciences and humanities.
Still, at 9K, you get a better class of institutionalisee.

'Troops loyal to the Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, have attacked the north-eastern town of Brega, which has a big oil installation.

That old 'loyalty' thing, eh? Wonder how Col. and mini-Col inspire so much.

Libyan state television said government forces now controlled the town's air and sea ports, but the opposition said the attack had been repulsed.

State TV. Not the best source. But then, those rebel types have to be the right sort before one takes what they say as gospel.

One notes Col. has vowed to fight to the last man and woman.

I think that means the SKY peroxide sponge is OK on the sofa, but Mr. Bowen might need to make tracks.

By the by, did anyone catch that rare moment of cross-party synergy today on the Daily Politics?

Alistair Darling and Philip Hammond in perfect harmony, tackling a 70's TV kid's show presenter as one.

And making an utter Horlicks of it. Quite a lot of 'mis-speaking'.

/news/uk-politics-12609782 (maybe a link to the 'debate'... who knows)

Guys, give up the day job. Quick.

THE FLIP SIDE OF 'SMOKING AT THE WHEEL' (#2)

It is generally understood that the most addicted smoker, can suffer 'withdrawal rage' when they have run out of nicotine. It follows that if alcohol has an UPPER legal limit, in the blood, an addict's NICOTINE, SHOULD BE SUBJECT TO A LOWER LEGAL LIMIT.

I governments were not Drug Barons, we could tackle the whole thing sensibly. As it is, a petrol-fuelled car with an 'unprotected ignition source' (fag) in it, would never be allowed under factory H&S regs.

We must be mad - LITERALLY mad. (Oh - and the stuff gives you a hideous set of illnesses, that kill slowly and horribly; the sort of thing we hanged Saddam for.)

AND TO MOVE FORWARD, WHAT DOES THE LADY ASSERT? (#5 link)

She says, unequivocally, they have to get away from PARTY GAMES.

Clearly, Iceland has the same problem we have - perhaps they believed the lie - INCREDIBLE (Dave) British 'democratic' governance, is the best.

Neither they, nor we, can go on like this.

so sell off a programme losing £20m a year which after the subsidy runs out will die anyway then start a new rolling news on the new platform? brilliant.

I have a feeling that Libya will end up being another Tiananmen Square.....

Onto more pressing matters - did anyone see the England v Ireland World Cup Cricket match today? Not only did Ireland win, but Kevin O'Brien scored the world's fastest century! Amazing!!!!

EDGY STREET SPARRING GETS US NO FURTHER ON

Michael Crick challenged the LibDem over a tacit liar-flyer. He challenged the Labour bloke regarding previous flyer lies.

Michael - pay more attention to my posts please. Then go on one of those quests, so beloved of edgy TV, to try to find a Political Party. That way the viewers can all discover that parties don't exist (as I have posted) and we might move a small step towards

    SPOILPARTYGAMES.

PROOF OF THE PUDDING-HEADS IN WESTMINSTER

Over and over, student fees are debated. Always the Coalition yells: "YOU DON'T PAY UP FRONT". Why does NO ONE ever point out that DEBT IS FUNDAMENTALLY BAD. It is a negative state. A dormant bad gene. An Albatross.

It shows the mechanistic, soulless nature of the Westminster Creature, that it does not even SENSE there is more to debt than 'just a bit of money, to be paid when you can afford it'. Sadly, waiting for NewsyNighty to make the point, will probably see me dead.

"THAT IS WHAT WE WANT IN THIS COUNTRY"

Dominant Dave's view of massive, expensive, military might.

No Dave - it's what YOU want, because you are a jingoistic needy little boy, who has not outgrown primitive, violent reaction to, mostly manufactured, threats.

It would seem to be a toff thing.

  • Comment number 17.

Russia has said that the reported air strikes on protesters in Libya was inaccurate. It did not happen. The ´óÏó´«Ã½ and others have been accused of playing-up the situation. There is some suggestion that false reporting was made to create a possible outside humanitarian response from the west.(reported elsewhere, Drudge perhaps)

    anyhow:

    Tx for that.

It is an interesting topic, and a concerning one if the 'performances' of two senior, influential politicians are to be analysed.

The segment in question is captured here:

I was a bit intrigued that both seemed to think 'just one book', which appears to form part of the current curriculum, is nothing to worry about. Or be unaware or not keen to discover what else may be around.

But given their level of awareness or grasp of facts in all areas, from education to (A)GW, none too surprising.

I wonder if they have directorships in wind farms lined up?

Who to believe in reports is an issue of concern, as well. Do we have to fund the Russians too?

A great deal could be learned about the de-education of the UK population by conducting a thorough examination of text books - the lack of chronology in history, the lack of sequentiality in biology (after all what point is there understanding 'transport across membranes' if you can't locate where a kidney is in the body?).

I recently took my 86 yr old mother 30 miles for what turned out to be a 10 minute ultrasound scan. I asked why the facility was not available in the local hospital 2 miles from my mother and was told that there were not enough trained staff. How come, I said, when so many people are unemployed and was told that it takes 5 years to train someone. well it does not take 5 years to learn how to operate an ultrasound machine if the results are interpreted by someone else and I don't even believe you would need a full 5 year medical degree to interpret the readings. the japanese tea ceremony may be a wonderful thing but the nhs just needs a few practically minded people. why not run apprenticeships in paramedical jobs as well as care jobs?
