Cambridge Environment Festival

Think you're green? Could you be greener? Pop along to one of these family events and discover how to lead an even more environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

Cambridge Environment Festival, venues throughout the city, 26th May - 8th June 2008

There are loads of ways to reduce your carbon footprint, from recycling your rubbish, to leaving your car at home and using your feet or your bicycle, growing your own veg, joining a conservation group or even turning your trash into something flash!

The Environment Festival takes place over half-term this year, so most of the events are family-friendly. You can get a full list by clicking on the link below and downloading the programme, but here's just a taster of some of the weird and wacky ways to make you think about what you can do to help the planet...

Make your trash flash...

Monday 26th - Wednesday 28th May - Junk to Funk workshops at Buchan Street Neighbourhood Centre from 10am until midday. Junk will be provided and you'll be shown how to turn it into a funky catwalk creation. All ages are welcome but under-11s must be accompanied. Book your place on 01223 508 149.

Thursday 29th May - The Junk to Funk Trashion Show, again at the Buchan Street Centre, from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. This is your chance to show off the creations you made earlier in the week. Call 01223 508 149 for details.

Dance yourself green...

Saturday 31st May - A cycle-powered tea dance is taking place at the Meadows Community Centre with music powered by bicycles. So, enjoy a carbon-free cha cha from 7pm to 11pm. Tickets are 拢5 and you'll need to book yours. Call Eve on 01223 508 142.

Do it with the family...

Thursday 5th June - Want to save the world? World Environment Day is being celebrated from 11am until 8pm on Christ's Pieces. There's a cycle-powered cinema in a big top tent, lots of environmental groups and free goodies to help you stay green.

Get digging

Dig! Dig!

See where it all goes...

Saturday 7th June - Landfill open day at Donarbon, Ely Road, Waterbeach. Between 11am and 4.30pm you'll have a chance to actually see where your rubbish goes! Tour the site and pick up some free compost to boot (bring your own sack and shovel) - and wear sensible shoes. Lots of activities for the kids, too.

Grow your own...

Sunday 8th June - take a peak at the peas or marvel at the marrows at Stourbridge Grove's allotment open day from midday until 4pm. Pick up top tips on growing your own food and to get you started there will be plants for sale. The allotments are just off Coldham's Lane.

And so much more besides...

There are masses of wildlife walks, environment-themed treasure hunts, opportunities to get involved with conservation groups, talks, workshops and exhibitions. Download the full programme for more details, grab your wellies and get outside and enjoy everything green.
