Maes D (The Welsh learners' tent)

Arwydd Maes D

13 Gorffennaf 2009

Ydych chi'n dysgu Cymraeg? Dyma beth oedd ar gael ar y Maes eleni.

Learning Welsh? Here's what was on offer on the Maes this year.

Maes D

Maes D is the Welsh learners' area on the Eisteddfod Maes. It lets learners meet and socialise, compete, share experiences, gather information, and, most importantly, have lots of fun.

There are four parts to Maes D:

  1. Y llwyfan (the stage)
A whole host of activities, performances, competitions and taster courses were held throughout the week including funky dancing, tai chi and yoga lessons, and performances by singers such as Si芒n James and Dafydd Iwan.
  2. Y caffi (the cafe)
A chance for learners and Welsh speakers to enjoy a coffee and a chat and also to win prizes by competing in the Competition of the day. Most of the volunteers in the caf茅 were Welsh learners.
  3. Y cyfrifiaduron (the computers)
Giving learners an overview of available websites that can help them on their way to learning Welsh. There was also the launch of computer programmes ideal to assist in learning Welsh.
  4. Yr ardal arddangos (the exhibition area)
A variety of stands, including Welsh for Adults, which had lots of useful information about how to get started with learning Welsh. Other stands included Merched Y Wawr, Countryside Council for Wales and Nant Gwrtheyrn.

Stage competitions and adjudications

These were held on Thursday 6 August with a whole day of opportunities to sing and recite in Welsh.
The ceremony for Y Gadair/The Chair and Y Tlws Rhyddiaith/Prose Medal was also part of the day.

Cystadleuaeth Dysgwr y Flwyddyn / Learner of the Year Competition

On Wednesday 5 August, in the afternoon, the four finalists came to Maes D for a question and answers session with the public and the judges. The judges then interviewed the contenders for the final time before the big announcement about who had won was made in the evening.

The 2009 Learner of the Year was named as Meggan Prys, originally from Ohio, America. She was presented with the Medal in the Pavilion on Thursday 6 August at 11.35am.
