Context

When there's a problem and people need to think about changing things to solve it, but it's complicated.

Overview

Group brainstorm on the drivers of change, the end goal, and the barriers that get in the way. Everyone will be brought closer to a mutually acceptable solution.

How-to

  1. Draw a cowboy.
  2. Draw red ants on him.
  3. Draw an oasis in the distance.
  4. Draw a stake in the ground with a chain around the cowboy's leg. Then tell the story… The Cowboy has just woken up in the desert only to find he's got fire ants crawling all over him (ouch!!). No problem, there's an oasis just over there. If he could just get to the oasis and jump in the water he could get rid of these ants. But what's this!! Those pesky bandits have chained his leg to a post.
  5. Explain it's a metaphor, then brainstorm a list in each category.
    • Ants = Drivers (Why do we want to move?)
    • Oasis = Goal (Where do we want to get to?)
    • Chain = Barriers (What's stopping us?)
