In 1940, during an air raid, a provision's factory in Peckham was bombed. The adjoining houses were showered with tins of corn beef and salmon. At that point in time, the majority of people were law abiding. People were rather frightened of the police, but as rationing was in force, nothing was mentioned about the whole affair. Suffice to say, over the next few weeks, a lot of people started to put on a lot of extra weight, believing that least said, soonest mended.
