I was born in June 1925 and living in Seymour Place, Marylebone and my brother , sister and I were evacuated to Brackley, Northants. I returned to London in April 1940 to commence work.
On 1941, I briefly joined the Home Guard, aged 16陆. It was the 大象传媒 Unit operating out of the Langham Hotel (opposite the 大象传媒). We had a home made armoured car (have always been curious to know if the two guys who wrote Dad鈥檚 Army had any connection?)
In September 1943, I joined the Fleet Air Arm as an armourer and in 1944 around D-Day, I was attached to the RAF at Yelverton .
In late 1944 I was posted to 1843 Squadron flying Corsairs from an aircraft carrier called Arbitor. I have photographs of a misjudged landing where the plane tried to land with one wheel on the flight deck and the other skittled over the AA defences on the starboard quarter. This resulted in us being sent to Australia for repairs while I was hospitalised. Returning to duty at Banicstown, Sydney where we were assembling crated for test flying and storing for the expected Japanese push.
The A bomb finished the war, but for several months, crated air craft would still arrive.
I have old press pictures of several hundred aircraft being dumped in the sea off Sidney Heads with sailors punching holes in them so that they would sink quickly.
