My Mother decided one day that it was time to go and check on our house in Portsmouth. The windows were crisscrossed with tape. When we went to bed that night my Mother pulled great heavy black curtains over the windows. She told me it was called blackout so no light could be seen by German bombers which might guide them to their target.
This particular night we were asleep in the front bedroom when a bomb dropped close by. Despite all precautions the window blew inwards and shards of glass flew towards us as we hid under the bedclothes. We were unhurt but we had to move to the back bedroom.
