We the Royal Engineers, together with the Pioneers, having reached the town of "Bergues" after several days of forced march, were deployed in small detachments and given the task of destroying everything that could be of use to the enemy, whilst the infantry rearguard prepared to make their last stand.
After several days carrying out these tasks we were assembled together by our Warrant Officer and told that the main evacuation forces had been completed some days ago and that in the absence of any senior officers, his last order was "every man for himself" and to cover the ten miles to Dunkirk in the quickest possible time.
When we arrived at the quayside we joined others, both military and civilian that were boarding a small vessel named "HIRD" which we eventually managed to board. Needless to say we were being constantly "strafed" in the process, suffering many casualties. We then managed to clear the harbour and sail for home.
Much to our surprise, on arrival at our home port, only the casualties were taken off the vessel and we were sent on to "Cherbourg" to repeat our task of desruction before it too was occupied. When we got back to the "HIRD" we found it had become too damaged to sail and we were taken aboard a small motor vessel for our return home.
The above gives only the sketchiest of detail, as I am sure anyone who was there will appreciate. My only object, and desire is to find someone who shared this experience in order that we can make contact and fill in the blanks.
The time scale as far as I can remember is as follows:- Arrival at "BERGUES" end of May.Order to make for DUNKIRK 5th or 6th June,Arrival at "CHERBOURG" 7th June, Arrival back to UK 9th June. Here's hoping someone somewhere remebers this. Anyone who can help me with the blanks in this story, would they please contact me via my email address:-
