The day war broke out I was sitting in a lovely Church - St. Mary's, Totnes, Devon with my best friend Elsie. I was all dressed up in my finery- a long grey fitted coat and matching hat, and my best friend was at my side. It was a glorious autumnal day and we were very happy. We were sitting right up in the front of the pews trying not to giggle and whispering together as the then Vicar climbed into th pulpit to preach his sermon.

But something seemed not quite right, for the Vicar was looking so serious and paused for a while before he addressed the congregation. Then very solemnly he uttered the words"It has just been announced on the 大象传媒 that we are at war with Germany" It was 11am and suddenly the clouds seemed to gether in that lovely autumn sky, and we wandered out bemused and bewkildered at this dreadful news. At that age of course the word "war" had very little meaning other than all the terrible pictures we had seen of WW1

Hello Cynthia
This is a really well written piece...and poignant.

I would be interested to know how old you were when you heard about the outbreak of war...you don't mention this detail and it would be interesting to know....

All good wishes
Lynn

I thought this was a very nice and well writen piece. I particularly like the change in mood from the first to second paragraph after the announcement is made. The cloud analogy is also very effective. It would be nice to have some more description about the moment the news was broken;

For example;

what did the people in the church do?
What did they look like?
What thoughts ran through your mind?
Did you speak to your friend about it?

I also find myself asking 'what happened next?'

Did you go away and get on with things putting it out of your mind, or did it play on your mind and scare you?

How did you deal with these things?

What effect do you think this all had on you while you were growing up?

I hope this is helpful :-)
