The day war broke out I was sitting in a lovely Church - St. Mary's, Totnes, Devon with my best friend Elsie. I was all dressed up in my finery- a long grey fitted coat and matching hat, and my best friend was at my side. It was a glorious autumnal day and we were very happy. We were sitting right up in the front of the pews trying not to giggle and whispering together as the then Vicar climbed into th pulpit to preach his sermon.
But something seemed not quite right, for the Vicar was looking so serious and paused for a while before he addressed the congregation. Then very solemnly he uttered the words"It has just been announced on the 大象传媒 that we are at war with Germany" It was 11am and suddenly the clouds seemed to gether in that lovely autumn sky, and we wandered out bemused and bewkildered at this dreadful news. At that age of course the word "war" had very little meaning other than all the terrible pictures we had seen of WW1
