By the time he died in 1896, artist, designer and writer, William Morris was already a legend for the range of his achievements and the forthrightness of his politics. Born into an affluent family in Walthamstow, London, in 1834 and educated at Marlborough College, his original aim was to become an Anglican minister.
However, Oxford significantly influenced his life. Whilst still a student at Oxford University in the 1850s, he became a keen reader of John Ruskin, who had great enthusiasm for the Gothic style, and under his influence moved away from religion towards architecture and design. More...
