William McGonagall: Scotland's Other National Bard |

This episode started McGonagall’s career as a serious wordsmith and thespian, he often appeared in local theatre productions and held rowdy recitals of his work. Accounts of the time recall how he was a figure of ridicule, often dressed in full Highland regalia and more often pelted with rotten fruit and subjected to verbal assaults.

History tells us that his spirit and will to continue with the vocation he clearly believed he was destined for evoked a certain respect from the crowds and helped cement his place in Scottish literary infamy, although there were many keen to mock him during his performances.
His choice of subject matter leaned heavily towards romantic retrospectives - including historical figures and events, such as Robert The Bruce, the battle of Bannockburn and most famously, the Tay Bridge disaster.
