Prestwick: A Century in Flight |
|
The area first seems to have seen aircraft in 1913, only ten years after the Wright brothers made the first powered flight, when the fields which were to become the airport saw light aeroplanes landing on them, however nothing concrete was established on the site until many years afterwards. Orangefield Hotel © Scran | It was the early 1930s in fact, before any substantial development happened. The initial surge came from the airline Midland and Scottish, who landed at “the Meadows” near Monkton village, and used the newly established hotel, Orangefield House, as a watering hole for flight staff.
The real impetus however was to come in February 1936, when the Scottish Aviation Elementary Flying Training School opened under the auspices of the Scottish Aviation company. Scottish Aviation was founded by David McIntyre and the Duke of Hamilton, the first men to fly over Mt Everest. McIntyre bought 348 acres beside Orangefield House and by the end of the year had built a hangar for Tiger Moth biplanes, offices and lecture rooms and a control tower; Prestwick was on the way up.
