"Sinn Féin has two seats in the bag and the SDLP have one, with another on it's way shortly," says the ´óÏó´«Ã½'s Gerry Bradley. That leaves just one and, with Eamonn McCann effectively conceding defeat, it means that Gary Middleton looks home and dry.

    Eamonn McCann

"McCann celebrates his 74th birthday a week after today’s result and instead of travelling up to Stormont, he can do it quietly with his partner Goretti at the place he calls home: the Bogside."

Former DUP minister Jonathan Bell, who stood as an independent after leaving the party in a blaze of publicity over allegations he made over the energy scandal, did not put in an appearance at the count.

After his elimination, it looks like his votes will be transferred to the DUP's Michelle McIlveen and UUP leader Mike Nesbitt, taking them over the line.
