Title - Extra Norfolk

Norfolk Nelson Museum: Building's history
Replica ship.
A home-made replica.

The opening of the museum signals the end of a year's restoration work on the former merchant's house.

The building's original owner was Sir George England who led Great Yarmouth through the Civil War and welcomed Charles II to the town in 1671.

In the mid 1900s, the premises was a police station and then it housed an architect's, but it had laid derelict for around 10 years before being bought by the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust.

The museum's curator, Faith Carpenter, described the transformation as amazing.

"It was in a hideous state, all the roof had fallen through," she said. "There were dead bats and mice, weeds up the walls, damp everywhere and the walls were coming out - it was an incredible amount of work.

"The trustees are really pleased, but it's taken a long time," she said.
