Former head teacher Christine Johnson lives in Carlton but has always had a soft spot for Burton Joyce, especially a bench by the River Trent. The 78-year-old was head teacher at Netherfield Infant and Nursery School for 18 years but in her earlier life during the 1950s she once rode on a Vespa from Nottinghamshire through France and Andorra to Spain. She's still as active now. In 2000 she began work towards The Discovery Award, the equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh awards but for the over 50s. By the end of 2003 she'd finished her bronze, silver and gold awards. She's currently taking the gold again "just for interest and because I am still keen on facing challenges." .
