Spring & Summer highlights 2004

Drama

Every Time You Look at Me

Chris and Nicky are two people who fall in love against the odds, in a contemporary love story starring two disabled actors in lead roles.

Nicky is a small person, four feet and one inch tall, and Chris is a thalidomide-impaired person.

40-year-old Chris is a teacher with aspirations of becoming deputy head of his school.

He has a beautiful girlfriend and, with the support of his parents, has achieved much despite his disability.

Nicky, meanwhile, is a hairdresser in her early 20s, who loves clubbing.

When the pair are introduced in a crowded nightclub, there's an undeniable spark, but falling in love with another disabled person is the last thing that either of them wants.

Written by Lizzie Mickery, Every Time You Look At Me is a searching insight into the choices of two people drawn into a relationship that is both liberating and painful.

Individually, neither of them sees their disability as an impediment.

But when they consider a future together, that changes. They must face not only the prejudices of the outside world but also of their own families and each other.

Chris is played by Mat Fraser and Nicky by Lisa Hammond.

The Long Firm

The dark underbelly of Sixties London is brought into sharp focus in Joe Penhall's adaptation of Jake Arnott's critically acclaimed novel, The Long Firm.

Cool, stylish and sexy, Penhall's drama captures the colourful and seedy side of the criminal underworld.

It tells the story of Harry Starks, played by Mark Strong, through the eyes of four characters who come into his orbit: a Tory Lord (Derek Jacobi), a fading movie star (Lena Headey), a lowlife speed dealer (Phil Daniels) and an academic (Shaun Dingwall).

Starks is a charismatic nightclub owner, racketeer, porn king and Judy Garland fan who makes and loses his fortune in Sixties Soho.

But he's no regular gangster 聳 he's an intelligent, vulnerable and complex man who yearns for something more than the rough and tumble of criminal life.

The drama also stars Joe Absolom as Starks' toyboy.

In This World

The winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival, In This World follows refugees Jamal and Enayatullah as they travel overland to London, passing through Iran, Turkey, Italy and France.

Bafta-winning director Michael Winterbottom shot In This World on hand held digital cameras and improvised the action during a journey mirroring that of the fictional refugees.

He used young talent who had never acted on film before.

Their fictitious journey is a distillation of the experiences of a multitude of real life asylum seekers and migrants - courageous and resourceful people seeking a better life but whose stories so often end in tragedy.

Kingdom Hospital

Starring Eighties screen idol Andrew McCarthy, Kingdom Hospital is based on Stephen King's adaptation of Lars von Trier's cult mini-series.

The Kingdom Hospital is not like other hospitals. It was built on the spot where two horrific fires ravaged other buildings.

The first fire, during the Civil War, burned down the Gates Galls Mill, where young children who worked in nightmarish conditions were trapped and perished.

The second destroyed the "old" Kingdom, a creepy hospital where an evil doctor performed hideous experiments.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the new Kingdom is the site of strange, paranormal phenomena, with the undead and unquiet still roaming its corridors.

Digital viewers will get the chance to watch each episode of Kingdom Hospital a week earlier on 大象传媒 THREE.
