Children in Need 2008: Radio Solent to build world record breaking sugar cube tower

Did you know that the most spoons balanced on a face was 15 and the fastest time to sort colour-coded jelly beans by sucking them up with a straw is 36 seconds?

Neither did 大象传媒 Radio Solent presenter Jon Cuthill until he and the mid-morning team decided to "do something different" for the year's 大象传媒 Children in Need Appeal.

On Friday 14 November, 大象传媒 Children in Need Day, Jon and the team will broadcasting live from West Quay Shopping Centre in Southampton as he attempts to break the Guinness World Record for the world's tallest sugar cube tower.

The current record is 145.5 cm (57.2 in) tall undertaken in 2003. Guinness representatives will be in attendance to adjudicate on Jon's world record attempt.

And listeners can join Jon, trying their hand at their own record, at the Radio Solent Children in Need Record Breakers Stall in West Quay.

Jon will be broadcasting live from the stall as he builds his tower, which is expected to take three to four hours and use anything between 1,200 and 2,000 sugar cubes.

Jon will start building in the Breakfast Show and, after the mid-morning programme, the world record fun will continue into Charlie Crocker's Afternoon Programme and Drive Time with Steve Harris.

Paul Miller will broadcast his show live from Television Centre.

Jon said: "We just wanted to do something different this year to encourage people to get involved and help raise cash for 大象传媒 Children in Need.

"But I am not sure what we are going to with all the cubes afterwards; it could mean a record breaking tea making effort.

"We really want people to come down to West Quay and have a go at breaking a record themselves.

"I know our listeners are a talented lot and surely someone has what it takes to break the record for the largest game of pass the orange under your chin?"

At the 大象传媒 Children In Need Record Breakers Stall at West Quay Shopping Centre people will be able to try breaking the world records for (these will not be officially adjudicated):

Most consecutive heads tossed for a coin - record = 8

Most spoons balanced on the face - record = 15

Fastest time to arrange a shuffled pack of cards into chronological order - record = 39 seconds

Largest game of pass the orange under your chin - record = 92 passes

Fastest time to sort colour-coded jellybeans by straw and suction - record = 36 seconds

Notes to Editors

大象传媒 Children in Need positively changes the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

The theme of this year's Appeal is Do Something Different and the charity is asking you to take up the challenge and help thousands more young people, here in the UK, who need help.

Doing Something Different doesn't mean anything difficult, expensive or scary; it just means something outside of your normal routine which will help raise money.

There are lots of fun, silly and unusual ideas in the 大象传媒 Children in Need Fundraising Pack. For more information go to bbc.co.uk/pudsey or call 0345 607 3333.

Remember, for every penny raised, a penny will go towards projects helping those in need. We couldn't do it without you, so a big Pudsey thanks in advance!
